Bearded Man

Location: Elstree - Hollybush public house
Type: Haunting Manifestation
Date / Time: 1970s
Further Comments: Around the time this ghostly figure was seen, phantom footsteps were also reported around the building.

Flying Glasses

Location: Elstree - Waggon & Horses public house, Watling Street
Type: Poltergeist
Date / Time: Unknown
Further Comments: There are stories of glasses which are propelled through the air or fall to the ground unaided by human hand, although no one can date these occurrences.

Man in the Snow

Location: Essendon - Private semi-detached house, close to Barbara Cartland's estate
Type: Haunting Manifestation
Date / Time: January 1981, 03:30h
Further Comments: A resident in this property was awoken by the pet dog whimpering in his bedroom. As he took the dog downstairs, through the glass front door he spotted a man wearing a shirt and tie under a trench coat. The man looked around thirty years of age and had a moustache. The resident opened the front door, but the figure had vanished, with no marks left in the snow. Closing the door, once again the resident could see the man on the other side. Flinging the door open, the figure had gone again.

Silence

Location: Frithsden - Rose's Hole

Further Comments: A chest of gold remains hidden in this area and can only be discovered by treasure hunters who remain completely silent while searching for the hoard.


A strange monk on the road.

Monk

Location: Great Gaddesden - Roman Road and Devil's Bridge
Type: Haunting Manifestation
Date / Time: Unknown
Further Comments: This old road is reputed to be haunted by a monk who once resided at a nearby Benedictine monastery. The bridge along the road has gained an 'occult' reputation, although there does not appear to be any older folklore attached to the location.

Monks

Location: Harpenden - Cross Keys public house
Type: Haunting Manifestation
Date / Time: 1960s, 2011
Further Comments: Monks were once based on this site prior to the construction of the pub and their ghosts reported to have been seen during the 1960s. The paranormal investigation team Paraception UK were called in 2011 after the landlady reported hearing loud bangs, and the team reported feeling pressure being applied to their throats during the night.

Elderly Couple

Location: Harpenden - Lower Luton Road between Batford in Harpenden and Wheathampstead
Type: Haunting Manifestation
Date / Time: 2011, 04:00h
Further Comments: Travelling to work one morning, a driver passed an older couple walking along the road. The driver glanced into the rear view mirror, but the couple had vanished.

Soldiers

Location: Harpenden - Private residence, Overstone Road
Type: Haunting Manifestation
Date / Time: Early 1990s
Further Comments: A group of three soldiers were seen sitting around a table playing cards in one of the properties reported to be the site of a First World War training camp. Another phantom man in uniform was observed passing through a bathroom wall.

Barbara's Dog

Location: Hatfield - Camfield Place
Type: Haunting Manifestation
Date / Time: Mid twentieth century
Further Comments: The home of Barbara Cartland is reportedly haunted by dog named Jimmy, which once belonged to her son before the canine was put down. It was here that Beatrix Potter witnessed a dozen candles snuffed out by an unseen hand.

Coach

Location: Hatfield - Hatfield House
Type: Haunting Manifestation
Date / Time: Coach unknown, figure in August 2017
Further Comments: The coach, pulled by a team of horses, belts down the driveway, enters the house, and disappears while ascending the staircase. In 2017 a visitor to the house spotted a man in Stuart attire reading a book while sitting by a window. The witness, believing the figure to be a reenactor, pulled out their phone to take a photograph, but the figure had vanished. The witness asked around and staff said there were no costumed actors in that day (nor any scheduled for the near future).

Icy to the Touch

Location: Hatfield - Station
Type: Crisis Manifestation
Date / Time: 1900s
Further Comments: The driver of a steam train passing through Hatfield Station reported a phantom man who stepped from the platform into the engine (even though the vehicle was travelling at 55 mph). The icy, dark-clothed entity forced the driver to stop the train, which ground to a halt at Hitchin station; the driver then noticed that the track ahead was blocked, and that the steam engine would have crashed into the obstruction if it were not for the ghost.

Dancing Robert

Location: Hemel Hempstead - Boxmoor Common
Type: Legend
Date / Time: Midnight
Further Comments: The site where the body of Robert Snooks lays, the last highwayman to be hanged in England. Anyone who dances around the grave twelve times will summon him to join the jig.

Unknown

Location: Hemel Hempstead - Jarman Park cinema
Type: Haunting Manifestation
Date / Time: Twenty-first century
Further Comments: Objects have been reportedly flung by unseen hands in one room in this cinema. Moaning is also heard from the same area.

Jolly Fat Man

Location: Hemel Hempstead - Old King's Arms public house
Type: Haunting Manifestation
Date / Time: Twentieth century
Further Comments: This jovial chap was seen laughing away as he sat on a bed. A white female form has also been reported on site.

Caped Figure

Location: Hemel Hempstead - Redbourn Road
Type: Haunting Manifestation
Date / Time: 19 April 2009, 00:30h, again in 2012
Further Comments: While driving home, this witness watched a caped figure with a wide-brimmed hat cross the road in front of their car. The figure did not appear in the rear-view mirror. Another witness spotted the figure in 2012, and said the figure felt so 'wrong' that the police were called.

Grey Lady

Location: Hemel Hempstead - Rose and Crown public house, High Street
Type: Haunting Manifestation
Date / Time: Unknown
Further Comments: Three ghosts are reputed to haunt this site, including a grey lady and a young girl locked up in her room because she was crippled.

Screams

Location: Hemel Hempstead - White Hart Hotel
Type: Haunting Manifestation
Date / Time: Unknown
Further Comments: Killed on the stairs while trying to escape an old press gang, this man's screams and cries can still be heard. One report says that when this entity appears, his colours are inverted, rather like a film negative.

Cream Coloured Wolf

Location: Henham - Back roads towards Thaxted from Stortford
Type: ABC
Date / Time: May 2011
Further Comments: A cream coloured wolf was spotted by occupants of a car while passing through this area. They stopped close to the creature which did not run off, apparently unfazed by the human presence. A few days later they observed the creature again. Some believe the creature to be more mundane and is a large German Shepherd.

Tiny Pilot

Location: Hertford - Exact area not known
Type: Fairy
Date / Time: 1929
Further Comments: Either an early UFO or fairy sighting (or maybe both), a brother and sister watched a thirty centimetre long biplane land nearby and a tiny occupant dressed in flying gear waved at them. The aircraft then took off.

Banging

Location: Hertford - Hairdressers (name withheld)
Type: Haunting Manifestation
Date / Time: 2012
Further Comments: Loud bangs and footsteps were reported coming from empty places within this hairdressers. A visiting psychic said that she could feel a presence upstairs.

Green Monk

Location: Hertford - Small church on Goldings Estate
Type: Haunting Manifestation
Date / Time: 1990s
Further Comments: Cloaked in green robes, a monk-like figure was seen by one witness for a few seconds before vanishing.

Goring the Cavalier

Location: Hitchin - Hitchin Priory
Type: Haunting Manifestation
Date / Time: 15 June (reoccurring)
Further Comments: Killed by Roundheads a few miles down the road during the civil war, the ghost of Goring continues onwards to his earthly destination once a year. A grey lady has also been spotted in the grounds of the priory.

Apports

Location: Hitchin - Hitchin Urban District Council offices, Brand Street
Type: Poltergeist
Date / Time: April 1951
Further Comments: Items including stones, coke, a belt buckle and a key fell from nowhere. The items were gathered up, but soon vanished without trace.

Monk and Author

Location: Hitchin - Minsden Chapel
Type: Haunting Manifestation
Date / Time: 31 October (reoccurring)
Further Comments: The chapel is reputedly haunted by a phantom monk, and a local author also threatened to haunt the location. Mr Reginald Hine, at the start of the twentieth century, said he loved the place so much that he threatened to haunt the church to protect it from any redevelopment work. An unconvincing photograph does exist of the phantom monk.

Cellar Sounds

Location: Hoddesdon - George public house
Type: Haunting Manifestation
Date / Time: Twentieth century
Further Comments: Strange noises have been reported from the cellar, and it is said that no animal dares venture down the steps...
