Unknown Girl

Location: Kentchurch - Kentchurch Hall

Further Comments: A young girl has been seen standing by a window in the building, glazing out across the land.

Thirsty Stone

Location: Kingstone - Large whetstone in the village
Type: Legend
Date / Time: Stone still present
Further Comments: This rock submerges itself in a nearby river to cool itself down on particularly hot days.

The Devil's Garden

Location: Kington - Area of barren land
Type: Legend - Old Nick
Date / Time: Still present?
Further Comments: This area of dirt and stone was known as the Devil's Garden by locals as nothing would ever take root there.

Thomas Vaughan

Location: Kington - Church
Type: Haunting Manifestation
Date / Time: 1469
Further Comments: After being killed in the battle of Banbury, Vaughan's spirit was reluctant to depart this plane of existence and tried to hide in this local church. It was finally trapped in a snuff box by the local holy men and banished into nearby Hergest Pool. Some variations of the story have Vaughan escape the snuff box before being laid once again, this time under a large tree on the Hergest Estate.

Dark Shadow

Location: Leominster - Berrington Hall
Type: Haunting Manifestation
Date / Time: May 1981
Further Comments: Parts of the hall were used as a hospital during both World Wars, and it was in this area that this phantom was seen walking about.

Tall Man in Leather

Location: Leominster - Croft Castle
Type: Haunting Manifestation
Date / Time: 1920s
Further Comments: This figure, estimated to be at least seven foot in height, was seen a couple of times in the castle. He quickly faded away in front of the witnesses.

Evil Short Man

Location: Leominster - Grange by the Priory Church
Type: Unknown Ghost Type
Date / Time: Mid 1970s, summer
Further Comments: Something 'male, short and see-through' was said to have jumped on a wall here, scattering the parents and children playing in the area. One witness was said to have called the thing 'absolutely evil'.

Monk

Location: Leominster - Priory Churchyard
Type: Haunting Manifestation
Date / Time: 1970s
Further Comments: A hooded figure was observed by one woman. She said that she could not see a face, but his sandals were highly detailed.

Henry Milborne

Location: Llanrothal - Llanrothal Court
Type: Haunting Manifestation
Date / Time: Circa 1690s
Further Comments: Milborne was killed when his horses bolted into the nearby river - his body was never found. His ghost started haunting his former home, and twelve priests were called for to exorcise the entity. When the ghost manifested, all but one priest fled. The ghost asked the priest how long he was banished for, to which the priest responded, 'until I eat bread'. The ghost left and took up residence in the river, while the priest died a few hours later, ensuring bread never passed his lips.

Money Coffin

Location: Longtown - Longtown Castle
Type: Legend
Date / Time: Unknown - still present
Further Comments: A local myth says that one thousand guineas are buried on this site, concealed within a coffin.

Highwayman

Location: Lugwardine - Road between Lugwardine and Bartestree
Type: Haunting Manifestation
Date / Time: 1985
Further Comments: Three witnesses were said to have encountered a ghostly highwayman here.

Station Porter

Location: Lyonshall - Disused railway station
Type: Haunting Manifestation
Date / Time: 1940 onwards
Further Comments: Since closing, this station has become a haunt for a sad looking man, who is said to have once been a porter at the building.

Singing

Location: Marden - Marden Pool
Type: Legend
Date / Time: Unknown
Further Comments: Both the sounds of bells and singing can be heard coming from this small body of water.

Thieving Mermaid

Location: Marden - River Lugg
Type: Legend
Date / Time: Unknown
Further Comments: An accident sent a church bell into the waters of the local river - a passing mermaid took the opportunity to steal the bell and can sometimes be heard ringing it. As a sidenote, a bell was recovered from the water in 1848.

Giant's Grave

Location: Merbach Hill - Arthur's Stone

Further Comments: This large stone on Merbach Hill is said to be the final resting place of a giant slain by the king.

The Mordiford Dragon

Location: Mordiford - Village and surrounding countryside
Type: Dragon
Date / Time: Unknown
Further Comments: Raised in secret by a local lass after she found the creature on the roadside, this dragon grew up and began to eat the locals and their livestock; the beast never touched its surrogate mother. The creature was finally killed, though the stories differ to whom carried out the slaying.

Royalist

Location: Moreton on Lugg - St Mary the Virgin church
Type: Haunting Manifestation
Date / Time: Unknown
Further Comments: A Royalist was captured, tortured and killed by Parliamentary soldiers in this churchyard. His ghost is said to remain.

Intervention

Location: Much Cowarne - Church
Type: Legend
Date / Time: Unknown
Further Comments: This church was due to be built on top of a nearby hill, but an unknown agency relocated the construction materials.

Hetty Walwyn

Location: Much Marcle - Hellens Manor (aka Hellen's House)
Type: Haunting Manifestation
Date / Time: Late twentieth century
Further Comments: Locked in the house by her mother after trying to run away with the stablehand, the ghost of Hetty remains trapped in the building. Another room in the building is reportedly haunted by a priest murdered by roundheads.

Moving Land

Location: Much Marcle - Hill
Type: Other
Date / Time: 7 Feb, (17th century?) the move started
Further Comments: A local legend says that the hill in the village moved around 300 metres down the road over a three day period - it destroyed the village church and killed livestock.

Woman Rower

Location: River Wye - General Area
Type: Crisis Manifestation
Date / Time: Prior to tragedy
Further Comments: This lowly figure, heard screaming and crying in pain, appears to those who will shortly undergo grief and loss.

Figure with a Lamp

Location: Ross on Wye - King Charles II public house
Type: Haunting Manifestation
Date / Time: 1990s
Further Comments: A photograph taken at the pub during the 1970s shows what appears to be a Victorian gentleman holding a lamp in the cellar. There have also been reports of apparitions and icy chills in the corridor above the cellar.

Old Woman

Location: Ross on Wye - River Wye
Type: Haunting Manifestation
Date / Time: Unknown
Further Comments: This gaunt old lady sails a small boat up and down the river at dusk, sobbing hysterically.

Large Black Creature

Location: Storridge - Windy Oak area
Type: ABC
Date / Time: Autumn 2003
Further Comments: A large black cat was spotted by two witnesses who were left unnerved as it moved around a mound and disappeared over the top.

Sometimes Headless

Location: Tretire with Michaelchurch - St Michael's Church
Type: Shuck
Date / Time: Unknown
Further Comments: The shuck which haunted this churchyard sometimes appeared headless.
