Coach

Location: Hatherleigh - George public house
Type: Haunting Manifestation
Date / Time: Coach unknown, female mid twentieth century
Further Comments: The sounds of a phantom coach approaching the inn have been reported, while a naked female phantom was once reported inside the building.

Fresh Flowers on Grave

Location: Haytor - Road between Heatree Cross and Hound Tor Inn
Type: Fairy
Date / Time: 1860 onwards
Further Comments: Like many nineteenth century suicides, Mary 'Kitty' Jay was buried at a crossroads. Fresh flowers are reported to be found at the grave, though no one has ever seen them placed, leading some to believe the site is tended by fairies. A floating female figure is also reported to have been seen by the graveside, as has a man draped in a dark blanket.

Yellow Oval

Location: Haytor - Skies above Liverton area
Type: UFO
Date / Time: 1998
Further Comments: Two yellow, oval bright lights were seen silently moving over the moors from Haytor by people standing in a carpark. The lights moved in a swooping motion and would loop the loop.

Cottage

Location: Haytor - Woods near the village
Type: Environmental Manifestation
Date / Time: Unknown
Further Comments: Said to come and go irregularly, the cottage matches none that can be remembered or placed in the area.

Belinda

Location: Haytor Vale - Rock Inn
Type: Haunting Manifestation
Date / Time: Unknown
Further Comments: Dressed in grey clothing, this ghost has been seen brush in hand, sweeping away along the corridors. It is said she was murdered by the wife of a man whom she was having an affair with.

Gold

Location: Hemyock - Simon's Barrow
Type: Legend
Date / Time: Unknown
Further Comments: A clay pot containing gold is said to be buried under Simon's Barrow.

Treasure Light

Location: Hennock - Nearby lane
Type: Other
Date / Time: Unknown
Further Comments: Marking the spot of buried treasure, this flaming marker has a habit of self-extinguishing before anyone comes too close.

Victorian Lady

Location: Hennock - Palk Arms public house
Type: Haunting Manifestation
Date / Time: Unknown
Further Comments: Several people over the years are said to have seen a woman in Victorian clothing while in the pub. As with many other public houses, mild poltergeist activity has been experienced by staff, such as a flying glass and closing doors.

Coach

Location: Hillsford Bridge - Combe Park Lane
Type: Crisis Manifestation
Date / Time: 2011?
Further Comments: A phantom coach is said to be heard being driven along this road, and denotes a forthcoming death, although of whom is unclear.

Grey Man

Location: Holcombe - A374 Teignmouth Road
Type: Haunting Manifestation
Date / Time: 1978
Further Comments: The road is haunted by a phantom middle-aged man dressed in a grey overcoat. The ghostly figure uses a torch to wave at passing motorists. At least one driver believed they had hit a real person, though no evidence of a collision could be found.

Tanned Woman

Location: Hole - Lane passing Hole Mill
Type: Post-Mortem Manifestation
Date / Time: 22 February 1959
Further Comments: While staying at this mill, T C Lethbridge reported that both he and his wife had spotted a tanned woman wearing dark clothing alongside a friend who was walking down the lane towards them. They briefly lost sight of the walkers, though when the Lethbridge's met their friend the other figure had vanished. The friend denied having anyone beside them, but the description did match another person she had known but who had died.

Devil's Stone

Location: Honiton - Church Hill
Type: Legend - Old Nick
Date / Time: Still present?
Further Comments: This rock is all that remains after the Devil and the locals threw stones at each other.

Dazed & Confused

Location: Honiton - Marlpitts Hill
Type: Haunting Manifestation
Date / Time: 1904, and 1907
Further Comments: A party of schoolchildren watched a dazed man stagger past them, wearing a brown coat covered in mud - but the teacher they were with was unable to see him. It is thought they encountered the ghost of a soldier fleeing from the Battle of Sedgemoor, killed only a few meters from his family's house. The ghost was last seen in 1907.

Loud Dragging

Location: Ide - Private house, High Street
Type: Poltergeist
Date / Time: June 2000
Further Comments: This building experienced a brief period of poltergeist activity; for several concurrent nights, the sounds of dragging plagued one of the rooms, though nothing was ever disturbed within.

Quiet Noises

Location: Ilfracombe - Chambercombe Manor House
Type: Haunting Manifestation
Date / Time: Unknown
Further Comments: A secret room discovered in the mid-nineteenth century also revealed a female skeleton lying in bed - since then, the area around the room has sported strange sounds late at night. Even by the 1890s, the ghost story was considered a smuggler's tale created to explain roughish late-night activities. The ghost of Lady Jane Grey is also reported to haunt the building.

Falling Woman

Location: Ilfracombe - Cliff near St Nicholas Chapel
Type: Haunting Manifestation
Date / Time: Circa 1999
Further Comments: Three witnesses watched a ghostly woman in white vanish over the edge of the cliff. The experience left the witnesses grief-stricken.

Moving chairs

Location: Ilfracombe - Ilfracombe Centre (council offices)
Type: Poltergeist
Date / Time: Circa September 2016
Further Comments: Video posted on social media appeared to show an office chair moving unaided across an empty office. A member of staff claimed that similar movements had occurred for at least eight years.

Heavy Headedness

Location: Ilfracombe - Rapparee Cove
Type: Haunting Manifestation
Date / Time: 18 and 21 July 2019
Further Comments: A family on holiday here had their child, who likes beaches, cry and describe the site as 'scary horrible'. Another family member stood knee deep in the sea and felt heavy headed and uncomfortable. It was speculated that feelings were related to a shipwreck in 1796 which took the lives of many people.

Coiled Serpent

Location: Instow - Water between town and Bideford Bay
Type: Cryptozoology
Date / Time: 1911
Further Comments: This creature was seemingly disturbed by a passing boat and swam away, revealing rows of black fins that ran down the side of its twenty to thirty metre long body.

Loud Tapping

Location: Ivybridge - Unknown Council House, Mill Meadow
Type: Poltergeist
Date / Time: Circa 1984
Further Comments: The sounds of tapping would wake the family living here at night, the sounds carrying on until dawn. The sound of a phantom child screaming would also piece the silence of the night.

Former Landlord

Location: Kennford - Gissons Arms public house
Type: Poltergeist
Date / Time: 2012, evenings
Further Comments: A former landlord is reputedly to blame for turning lights on, opening doors and playing music. A burning smell has also been detected in the bar, disappearing after a minute or two, and the face of a small blonde girl was reported looking out of the window towards the car park.

Location: Kentisbeare - Bradfield Hall

Further Comments: This entity rides on horseback pulling a roller across the fields.

Ape-like Bear

Location: Kings Nympton - Woods near the village
Type: Cryptozoology
Date / Time: 1978
Further Comments: A party of three boys out exploring came across a large creature with green eyes, like those of a cat. Its body resembled a bear, though it stood upright like an ape.

Honeymooner

Location: Kingsbridge - King's Arms Hotel
Type: Haunting Manifestation
Date / Time: Unknown
Further Comments: This bride found herself alone after her husband ran away before their first night together - her shade still waits for his return.

Type: Haunting Manifestation
Date / Time: Unknown
Further Comments: Haunted by both a nun and Augustine monk, these shades have been reported in the light of day.
