Cornish Ghosts, Folklore and Forteana

Witchcraft Giver

Location: Zennor - Giant's Rock (was a Logan Stone)
Type: Legend
Date / Time: Midnight
Further Comments: If this stone were scaled nine times at midnight, without it shaking, the climber would be granted the power of witchcraft. The rock is no longer a Logan (or rocking) stone, which implies someone failed in their pursuit of the magical arts.

Bloody Cyclist

Location: Zennor - Road leading to Foage Farm
Type: Haunting Manifestation
Date / Time: Unknown
Further Comments: Covered in blood, this man pedals quickly down the thin road, as if desperate to find someone to help him.

Table

Location: Zennor - The Four Parish Stone (connecting parishes of Madron, Gulval, Morvah and Zennor)
Type: Legend
Date / Time: Still present
Further Comments: A local legend says that Saxon kings used this stone as a table, while Prince Arthur and four kings stopped and rested at the rock when fighting the Danes.

Storm Warning

Location: Zennor - Tinner's Arms
Type: Poltergeist
Date / Time: Weather Dependent: Before stormy weather
Further Comments: This poltergeist could be little more than faulty wiring, as it only becomes active just before the area is hit by electrical storms.

Poor Woman

Location: Zennor - Unknown property, Trewey neighbourhood (highly likely site no longer exists)
Type: Haunting Manifestation
Date / Time: Circa nineteenth century
Further Comments: A woman living in poverty in this area bequeathed her shawl to a local young girl. When the wish was not fulfilled, the woman's ghost returned and started to stalk the girl. One witness challenged the ghost, and after being told the reason for the return, ensured the girl was given the shawl. Before vanishing forever, the ghost performed one last act - it carried the girl to the woman's grave (in Ludgvan), where the girl's shoe fell off. No one wanted to risk upsetting the ghost for a second time, so left the shoe on the woman's grave.

John Jones

Location: Zennor - Various locations around the town
Type: Post-Mortem Manifestation
Date / Time: Early 1800s
Further Comments: James Botterell, a former seaman who retired to the area, was haunted by former colleague John Jones. The ghost of John followed James everywhere he went, until one day James asked the ghost what he wanted. John's ghost replied he needed James to pay off his debts. Once James carried out this act, the ghostly John announced that he was off to Fiddler's Green and was never heard of again.

Mary

Location: Zennor - Zennor Cove
Type: Haunting Manifestation
Date / Time: Circa 2006, approximately 14:00h on a bright day
Further Comments: A visitor to the site spotted a woman in Victorian clothing with dark hair pulled back into a bun. The woman looked at the visitor and, in the visitor's mind, asked if they knew her name. The visitor said 'Mary Trelawney' and the woman vanished.
