Hovering Head

Location: Aberaeron (Dyfed) - Llanina House
Type: Haunting Manifestation

Further Comments: The ghostly form of a severed head belonging to a murdered young bride reputedly hovers around this building. There are also reports of a phantom man whose clothes are saturated with water.


Rapping

Location: Aberarth (Dyfed) - Two unnamed adjoined houses
Type: Poltergeist
Date / Time: March 1909
Further Comments: A resident in one of two homes plagued by unexplained rapping moved out after being unable to stop the sounds. Visitors to the properties traced the sounds to the chimney but were unable to discover the source of the sounds which started at 9pm and ceased at 3am.

Date / Time: Circa 2010
Further Comments: Some believed this phantom, said to have been observed by staff and patients, to be a miner who died in a colliery accident, while others thought it to be a former patient.


Knocking

Location: Aberbargoed (Gwent) - Private residence on the hill
Type: Haunting Manifestation
Date / Time: January 1907
Further Comments: A newly married couple were said to have fled their home after enduring tapping on the walls, disembodied footsteps on the staircase and tin boxes which moved themselves around. Cynics said that the sounds were probably caused by work in the local colliery.


Hosea Pope

Location: Aberbeeg (Gwent) - A4046 to Ebbw Vale
Type: Haunting Manifestation
Date / Time: Unknown
Further Comments: Policeman Hosea Pope was murdered while trying to arrest a man named James Wise. Pope's ghost has since been seen along this stretch of road.


Caped Figure

Location: Aberbeeg (Gwent) - Bridge by the side of the river
Type: Crisis Manifestation
Date / Time: Unknown
Further Comments: A woman walking along the river to her place of work passed by a man wearing a cape and tall hat. She did not pay much attention, but as she walked by, she suddenly felt cold and the hairs on the back of her neck stood up. She turned to face the man, but he had vanished. A few weeks later a close friend drowned at the exact spot of her encounter.


Fish Fall

Location: Aberdare (Mid Glamorgan) - Mountain Ash
Type: Other
Date / Time: 11 February 1859 (or 1841)
Further Comments: Live fish were seen falling from the sky during a storm around the home of a Mr Nixon. Some of the fish were removed from the guttering of neighbouring houses; a few of the creatures survived and kept in freshwater.


Wellington

Location: Aberdare (South Glamorgan) - Sky over Cwmbach estate
Type: Haunting Manifestation
Date / Time: Circa 1979
Further Comments: A witness outside their home heard engines but could see anything. They stepped inside their doorway but as the sound of the engines grew louder the witness stepped outside again. Looking up, the witness spotted a twin engine, dark coloured Wellington bomber fly over and past, as 'real looking and sounding as any solid aircraft'. At the time, the witness thought nothing was strange about the encounter as they were unaware that there were no flying airworthy examples of a Wellington that existed.


Screaming

Location: Aberdaron (Gwynedd) - St Mary's well

Date / Time: 1950s - July 2019, evening hours
Further Comments: From this spot screaming and chanting can be heard at dusk, thought to be coming from the nearby Bardsey island.


Hoof

Location: Aberdovey (Gwynedd) - Carn March Arthur (three miles northeast of Aberdovey)
Type: Legend
Date / Time: Still present
Further Comments: The hoof prints from King Arthur's horse can still be seen imprinted in the rock here.


Lost Town

Location: Aberdovey (Gwynedd) - Off coast
Type: Legend
Date / Time: Summer (reoccurring)
Further Comments: Swallowed by the sea, church bells belonging to a town lost off the coast here can still be heard on quiet evenings. They say that at low tides one can see sunken tree trunks.


Crockery Throwing

Location: Aberdovey (Gwynedd) - Penhelyg House
Type: Poltergeist
Date / Time: Circa 1845
Further Comments: This noisy spirit became active at night, throwing around crockery, though never breaking it. The activity ceased the day after a visitor to the house read from a bible.


Swallowed Sounds

Location: Aberdyfi (Gwynedd) - Off coast
Type: Legend
Date / Time: Weather Dependent: Calm nights
Further Comments: The bells of a church which was swallowed by the sea can sometimes be heard when the weather is right.


Mass Premonition

Location: Aberfan (Mid Glamorgan) - No fixed location

Date / Time: Pre-21 October 1966
Further Comments: According to the Journal of the Society for Psychical Research, Vol 44, no 734, around 200 people reportedly predicted this disaster in the days leading up to it, including a local girl who was unfortunately one of those killed in the appalling accident.


Hanbury Family Only

Location: Abergavenny (Gwent) - Coldbrook House (demolished 1954)

Further Comments: The state bedroom was said to be haunted by an entity which could only be perceived by a member of the Hanbury family. The house was also known for its 'bloodstained room', the pool of blood coming from either a duelling gambling man or a maid who rejected the advances of a butler.


Old Woman in Black

Location: Abergavenny (Gwent) - Kings Arms public house

Further Comments: This figure was observed descending the staircase and passing through the lounge.


White Lady

Location: Abergavenny (Gwent) - Llanvihangel Court
Type: Haunting Manifestation
Date / Time: Unknown
Further Comments: This pallid woman is said to leave the house at midnight and walk into a nearby wood. The White Room is said to be haunted by a little man with green eyes. It is not known for sure whether these ghosts are connected to a series of dark stains on the staircases of the building.


Friendly Character?

Location: Abergavenny (Gwent) - Skirrid Mountain Inn

Further Comments: While one report described one ghost here only as 'friendly', it may be in the minority. The inn is a former courthouse and claims to have had 182 people executed by noose within. One woman at the inn reportedly developed marks around her neck after feeling something akin to an invisible rope being wrapped around the skin. There has also been a report of a Cromwellian soldier on the site.


Coloured Women

Location: Abergele (Clwyd) - Gwrych Castle
Type: Haunting Manifestation
Date / Time: 1950s
Further Comments: This castle is haunted by both a white woman and a lady in red, the latter thought to have been killed during a fox hunt, while the former returned after being buried in unconsecrated ground. Another story says that the white woman was the former owner of the castle (Winifred Cochrane, Countess of Dundonald) who returned after her bitter husband, written out of her will, purchased the site and destroyed the contents.


Gwennon Gorn

Location: Abergele (Clwyd) - Sea off the coast

Date / Time: Summer, 1967 or 1968
Further Comments: One legend says a phantom vessel, the boat of Prince Madoc, has been sighted just off the coast, vanishing just as quickly as it materialised. One witness said that she spotted the vessel one summer; a ship containing several men, not dissimilar to Vikings, disappeared moments after being seen.


Man in Leather

Location: Abergele (Clwyd) - The Bull Hotel

Further Comments: The man who appears dressed in leather is said to be a resident who died in a motorbike accident. A phantom monk and ghostly woman are also said to haunt the site.


White Lady

Location: Aberhafesp (Powys) - Aberhafesp Hall

Date / Time: Unknown
Further Comments: The phantom white woman is said to make her way from the nearby church to a door on the east side of the hall.


David Bowen

Location: Aberhowy (Powys) - Road to village from Cardigan Bay
Type: Haunting Manifestation
Date / Time: Weather Dependent: Foggy nights (last reported 1956?)
Further Comments: The ghost of David on his push bike is said to guide people along the road when the weather is densely foggy and dangerous. Bowen lost his son in an automobile accident on such a night, and now tries to ensure such a tragedy never happens again.


Woman in Black

Location: Abermule (Powys) - Gate along the railway track to Montgomery
Type: Haunting Manifestation
Date / Time: Winter 1921
Further Comments: A woman in black spoke to a teenager along this track, expressing her disappointment that another train was not due for two hours. The witness believed that the woman was a victim of the rail crash here which took seventeen lives on 26 January 1921.


Thomas Williams

Location: Aberporth (Dyfed) - Unidentified cottage
Type: SHC
Date / Time: November 1808
Further Comments: Human combustion, but in this case not so spontaneous. A sailor who liked his rum, Thomas Williams fell unconscious after a drinking session. His friend summoned a doctor who arrived after dark. The attending physician held a candle close to Thomas, who promptly caught light, bathed in blue flame. A bucket of water thrown over the fire only made the flames larger. The witnesses all left (for reasons not fully explained) and returned the following morning to find Thomas's torso completely consumed, but his shirt only charred. Thomas's friends said that he had been wicked and that the devil had come for him.
