Phantom Horses & Riders from across the Isles

Outline of Coach

Location: Stroud (Gloucestershire) - Road running alongside Rodborough Common, and apartments built near Rodborough Manor
Type: Haunting Manifestation
Date / Time: 1970s, September 2013
Further Comments: A couple out walking in the 1970s watched in amazement as the ghostly outline of a horseless coach passed them. In 2013, a group of friends watched as an old fashioned car silently moved by. No driver could be seen and as they tried to follow, it vanished. Other witnesses have seen the phantom, and others have reported headless horsemen or of hearing galloping.

Coach & Horses

Location: Sturminster Newton (Dorset) - Stock Gaylard House
Type: Haunting Manifestation

Further Comments: A local legend says a phantom coach haunts this area.

Danny Grimshaw

Location: Sutton Courtenay (Oxfordshire) - Hobbyhorse Road and near the local power plant
Type: Haunting Manifestation
Date / Time: Twentieth century
Further Comments: This ghostly figure, charging around the roads on the back of a white horse whilst waving a bloody, straight edged razor, has survived at least one exorcism attempt.

Jeremiah Abershaw

Location: SW19 (Greater London) - Wimbledon Common
Type: Haunting Manifestation
Date / Time: late nineteenth / early twentieth century
Further Comments: No wombles here, only a ghostly padfoot looking for victims after being hanged for his crimes two hundred years ago. On two occasions the ghostly entity has been seen wearing convicts clothing. Abershaw is sometimes heard on horseback, hooves heard thumping on the ground, yet the animal never appears.

Brown Bear

Location: SW3 (Greater London) - Glebe Place, Chelsea (aka Henry VIII hunting lodge)
Type: Haunting Manifestation
Date / Time: Twentieth century
Further Comments: Bears, brown, white and black in colour, have all been reported in this area - a once popular place for bear baiting. A man on horseback has also been sited, riding in the area, and an unidentified home along the street was reputedly haunted by the sounds of choking.


Syderstone Village Common.

Highwayman with Horse

Location: Syderstone (Norfolk) - Village Common
Type: Haunting Manifestation
Date / Time: Unknown
Further Comments: Appearing under the light of the full moon, the ghostly highwayman on horseback is reported to say, 'Your money or your life', and other such cliche expressions.

Running Rein

Location: Sywell (Northamptonshire) - Sywell House
Type: Haunting Manifestation
Date / Time: Twentieth century
Further Comments: Racehorse Running Rein (or Running Rain) was put down on the property when he became part of a legal dispute (possibly over the horse's true age) and his owner became unwilling to hand the mare to another trainer. The creature could be heard at night, galloping around the site.

Battle of Bramham

Location: Tadcaster (North Yorkshire) - Bramham Park
Type: Haunting Manifestation
Date / Time: Unknown
Further Comments: The sound of horses galloping on the field is thought to be those forever fleeing the nearby site of battle, which took several hundred lives.

Horse

Location: Talke (Staffordshire) - Road just outside the village
Type: Haunting Manifestation
Date / Time: Pre 1932
Further Comments: Drivers reported hearing the sound like a hammer striking an anvil before seeing a phantom horse being led across the road, both man and beast cut off at the knees as if walking a much older track since built upon.

Black Coach

Location: Talland (Cornwall) - Bocaddon Moor
Type: Haunting Manifestation
Date / Time: 1731
Further Comments: This area of moorland was haunted by a black carriage pulled by two black, headless mares. The entity was never seen again after the Reverend Doidge exorcised the entity.

William Doggett

Location: Tarrant Gunville (Dorset) - Eastbury (house ruins)
Type: Haunting Manifestation
Date / Time: Unknown
Further Comments: Having borrowed large amounts of money to build the house, William Doggett committed suicide when he realised he could never pay off the loan. Doggett's ghost was heard walking around the house and blamed for opening and closing doors. It was also seen, headless, driving a coach in the grounds.

Horses

Location: Tarset (Northumberland) - Tarset Castle
Type: Legend
Date / Time: Unknown
Further Comments: There is said to be a secret passage connected this site and Dally Castle, with phantom horses heard running the route at midnight.

Plotter

Location: Tatsfield (Surrey) - Road through village
Type: Haunting Manifestation
Date / Time: 05 November (reoccurring)
Further Comments: A horseman who rides through the village on this date was considered to be a member of the Gunpowder Plot escaping from London.

Drake

Location: Tavistock (Devon) - Road between town and Plymouth
Type: Haunting Manifestation
Date / Time: Unknown
Further Comments: Pulled by black headless horses, Sir Frances Drake drives a dark hearse down these roads whenever his drum is heard to beat (see Yelverton (Devon) entry).

Headless Group

Location: Tenby (Dyfed) - Between Tenby and Sampson Cross
Type: Legend
Date / Time: Every night (reoccurring)
Further Comments: A headless team of horses driven by a headless coachman carries a headless lady in a coach along this road every night. As they reach the crossroads known as Sampson Cross, some ten miles from their starting point, they all disappear in a large explosion. Some people believe the entities have been laid, and now rest in a nearby lake.

Heinous Horse

Location: Termonfeckin (County Louth) - Road passing Rath House
Type: Unknown Ghost Type
Date / Time: 1966
Further Comments: Two young adults driving along this road witnessed an otherworldly horse with the face of a man, the creature's eyes bulging from their sockets. The manifestation stood in the road, blocking their path for two minutes before vanishing.

Headless Horseman

Location: Thaxted (Essex) - Gibbets Cross, crossroads
Type: Haunting Manifestation
Date / Time: Twentieth century
Further Comments: A local farmer told his friends that he watched a headless horseman sitting upon a white steed pass by this crossroads.

Funeral Procession

Location: The Wansdyke (Wiltshire) - Various places along the post Roman dyke
Type: Haunting Manifestation
Date / Time: Unknown
Further Comments: A wooden wagon bearing a coffin, pulled by jet black horses, has been spotted along this old dyke. The spectacle vanishes if witnesses become too close.

Little George

Location: Thetford (Norfolk) - St George's Nunnery - Nun's bridges
Type: Haunting Manifestation
Date / Time: Sixteenth century?
Further Comments: The seven year old George fell from a wooden horse in May 1559, cracking his skull on the wall of the bridge and dying from his injury. The young ghost haunted the area for many years (riding around on a headless wooded horse) before being exorcised.

Mustard Coloured Coach

Location: Theydon Bois (Essex) - Hill Hall
Type: Haunting Manifestation
Date / Time: 31 May, Midnight (reoccurring)
Further Comments: On the stroke of midnight, a mustard coloured coach is believed to drive down the driveway of the ruined building. Its owner is thought to be Duke de Morrow, who lived in the building at the beginning of the twentieth century.

Radiant Boy

Location: Thirsk (North Yorkshire) - Road to the town from Topcliffe, exact location unknown
Type: Haunting Manifestation
Date / Time: Unknown
Further Comments: Lighting up the night with his brilliance, this lad rode past the witness on horseback, disappearing across a field.


Lord Henniker's Gravel Driveway in Thornham, Suffolk.

Horse & Cart on Driveway

Location: Thornham (Suffolk) - Lord Henniker's Gravel Driveway
Type: Haunting Manifestation
Date / Time: Late twentieth century
Further Comments: The present Lord's father told stories of hearing horses and wheels on the gravel driveway; on investigation, there was nothing ever seen.

Horse

Location: Tillington (Sussex) - Lanes in the area
Type: Haunting Manifestation
Date / Time: Nineteenth century?
Further Comments: One unnamed lane in the village is the haunt of a headless horse. The village must attract decapitated entities, as a headless pig is also said to haunt the general area.

Merlin

Location: Tintagel (Cornwall) - Tintagel Castle
Type: Legend
Date / Time: Unknown
Further Comments: A place featuring in Arthurian legend (Arthur is said to have been born here), the cave under the castle is said to be the one time home of Merlin. His spirit now shows a reluctance to leave the place. A ghostly horseman was reported by one witness, who promptly named the spirit as King Arthur.

Galloping Horses

Location: Tockholes (Lancashire) - General area
Type: Haunting Manifestation
Date / Time: Late twentieth century
Further Comments: A ghostly herd of horses is said to haunt this area.
