Further Comments: A sailor once fell in love with a mermaid here. The woman gave him a golden ring, informed the sailor that she would be back in five days to meet him. Five days later, the man died.

Old Canky

Further Comments: Canky was a resurrection man who, with his motley crew, stole fresh bodies from the churchyard and sold them in Manchester to doctors and medical students. His shade still lurks in the shadows of the long dark passageway.

Floating Orbs

Further Comments: Several strange events resulted in the owner of this nightclub calling in a psychic, including a phantom scream, glowing balls of light which floated around, and reports of a ghostly human form seen in both the basement and in the upper part of the building.

Old Man

Further Comments: This entity is thought to belong to an old man who died in the house; his body remained undiscovered for several days after he passed away. While the child who lived in the house appeared to like the spirit, the boy's mother was not so keen.

Cavalier

Further Comments: The remains of several bodies were found under the floor of the basement, dating back to the civil war. The forlorn ghost seen lurking about the site is believed to be the spiritual echo of one of the corpses. A more contemporary shade is one of a man in a grey suit, of whom little is known.

Further Comments: The souls of all those who will die by the following All Souls' Day walk through the church at midnight. A former member of the clergy is also reported to haunt the church, though his appearance is not date related.

Further Comments: This dog was thought to contain the soul of a man named Blomeley, who shot several people on the site. Accompanying poltergeist like activities made it difficult for anyone to live in the house.

Further Comments: Several reports exist of something strange occurring in and around the elevator of this hotel, including one involving a thin, ghostly figure observed within the lift.

Further Comments: During the demolition of this building a number of workers reported the ghostly sounds of an organ being played. The shopping centre that has replaced the theatre may have inherited the ghost, though no one can say for certain.

Further Comments: The Paranormal Activity Research Team of Lancashire investigated this haunted public house. They picked up the presence of a Cavalier in the attic and a figure in the cellar who created an sharp drop in temperature.

Further Comments: Disembodied footsteps are said to heard as they move through this building each Saturday. Misty figures have also been reported.

Further Comments: This white figure in a long hanging garment (either a woman in a dress, or a monk or priest) haunts this area of town.

Hanging Highlanders

Further Comments: Caught by Cromwellian troops, these Highlanders were immediately hanged on the surrounding trees. The sound of running can be heard around the anniversary of the executions. A couple of people here in January 1990 heard loud drumming which moved down the lane, though nothing could be seen.

Matron

Further Comments: While cleaning a staircase, a member of domestic staff spotted the legs and lower gown of the Matron ascend the stairs. The cleaner said 'good morning' and was surprised that there was no reply. A few minutes later the Matron arrived and spoke to the cleaner, who expressed surprise and said the Matron had already gone upstairs. Both Matron and cleaner then went to investigate but no one could be found on the floor above. Other members of staff had also claimed to have seen the phantom Matron.

Woman in a Long Coat

Further Comments: A ghostly man was seen to walk through a closed by a customer, while the landlord observed a woman in a long coat walk into the bar, only to disappear without trace. A phantom dog was also reported.

Further Comments: This typical pub ghost is blamed for stealing little items, though one story states the shade once stopped a little girl from falling down a set of stairs by catching her as she tripped.

Further Comments: One of these properties was said to be haunted by a mother upset with her children, while the next door site was home to a poltergeist who would turn electrical goods off and throw small items around.

Madame Hannah Beswick
Location: Oldham - Birchen Bower (building no longer stands, but replaced by Ferranti Works), Bower Lane, Hollinwood

Further Comments: Though the building no longer stands, the ghost of Beswick was also said to haunt her former lands, watching over the gold that she had buried to protect it from thieves and soldiers. The shade reportedly stands tall, wearing a black silk dress and frilly cap, although sometimes she was headless. According to legend, her presence grows stronger every seventh anniversary of her death (in 1758), and she was also seen on clear nights. During the 1950s it was claimed that 35 Ferranti workers had seen her on different occasions.

Further Comments: Accidentally killed in a mock sword fight while acting as Macbeth, Norham sometimes returns on a Thursday (the day he died) to try to figure out what happened.
