Further Comments: During refurbishment work in this pub, workmen were said to have heard strange human groans and encountered unexplained cold spots.


 
 


Nuns

Location: Brighton - Ape (formally Lawleys), North Street

Further Comments: A former manager is said to have seen three phantom nuns in this property. The entities reportedly glide across the floor before vanishing through the back wall.


 
 


Known by Name

Further Comments: An unknown voice is said to call out to staff and customers using their first names.


 
 


Coach Driver

Location: Brighton - Battle of Waterloo public house, Rock Place
Type: Haunting Manifestation
Date / Time: 1996
Further Comments: This figure, complete with cloak, has been seen drifting around the front door and the gentlemen's toilets. He is said to be the driver of a local mayor who was murdered by a highwayman shortly after leaving the pub.


 
 


Large White Dog

Location: Brighton - Beach
Type: Shuck
Date / Time: Last dog sighting unknown, tall man seen in Spring 1977
Further Comments: Reportedly the size of a small horse, this phantom dog will follow lonely walkers on the beach for short distances before vanishing. A witness reported seeing a tall man in old fashioned clothing and a tall hat walking along the sidewalk during the night in 1977 - the figure vanished into the mist.


 
 


Deryck Carver

Location: Brighton - Black Lion public house
Type: Haunting Manifestation
Date / Time: 1940s onwards
Further Comments: Deryck Carver was burnt at the stake in 1555 and is believed to have been the first brewer in Brighton. Since the 1940s it has been claimed his ghost haunts the cellar, and in 2006 the manager of the building claimed have felt a unnerving presence in that area on several occasions. A builder in the upper part of the building spotted a shadowy figure in 1995.


 
 


Christine Holford

Location: Brighton - Blue Gardenia Club
Type: Poltergeist
Date / Time: April 1963
Further Comments: Club owner Harvey Holford was found guilty of manslaughter after shooting and killing his wife. Shortly after Holford's conviction, lights in the building would turn themselves on and off and kitchen utensils moved themselves around the room. The poltergeist was said to have left after a medium visited the club, although there are other reports that it may have lingered longer.


 
 


Henry Solomon

Location: Brighton - Brighton Town Hall
Type: Haunting Manifestation
Date / Time: Twentieth century?
Further Comments: Solomon (the first Chief Constable of Brighton) was killed around the middle of the eighteenth century, after being hit around the head with a red hot poker during the attempted escape of a prisoner in the cells. The former officer's ghost reportedly haunts the basement, while the upper parts of the building are haunted by a monk; a remnant from when a monastery stood on the site.


 
 


Flashing Lights

Location: Brighton - Bugel Inn, St Martins Street

Further Comments: This public house was once plunged into chaos by a poltergeist - it played with door locks, moved furniture around, and would flick the lights on and off at speed.


 
 


Charlie

Location: Brighton - Bugle Inn, St Martins Street
Type: Poltergeist
Date / Time: 1965
Further Comments: Locals christened this entity 'Charlie', and blamed him for moving furnishings, flicking lights on and off, locking and unlocking doors, and generating other minor mischief.


 
 


Screams

Location: Brighton - Clayton tunnel

Further Comments: Since a tragic train crash in 1862, there have been reports of screams, cries and the sound of crunching metal emanating from this tunnel.


 
 


Pale Man

Location: Brighton - Cricketers Inn
Type: Poltergeist
Date / Time: 1990s
Further Comments: Bottles and glasses would fall off shelves, doors were heard to slam shut, and footsteps were heard climbing the stairs. On several occasions a pale man wearing a long black cloak was spotted by one manager. In addition, the grey nun which haunts the Lanes has been seen just outside the inn.


 
 


Hooded Figure

Location: Brighton - Druid's Head public house, Market Street

Further Comments: Always seen from the corner of one's eye, a good description of this spirit was never forthcoming. However, another ghost in the building moves slightly slower - a woman in a red dress has been seen on one occasion in vicinity of the main bar.


 
 


Tim

Location: Brighton - Duke of York's Cinema, Preston Circus
Type: Haunting Manifestation
Date / Time: Unknown
Further Comments: Tim was a brewery worker who was crushed to death on this site. After the cinema took over the site, staff have felt Tim's presence watching them, and the smell of brewing beer fills the air.


 
 


Young Girl

Location: Brighton - Eatery along Old Steine
Type: Haunting Manifestation
Date / Time: Late twentieth century
Further Comments: The basement of this building is said to be haunted by the phantom of a young girl who died in a fire on the site. The ghost is also reported to haunt the building which backs onto this location.


 
 


Disabled Girl

Location: Brighton - First floor rooms, Regency Hotel, Regency Square
Type: Haunting Manifestation
Date / Time: Unknown
Further Comments: This young girl jumped from one of the upstairs windows - her ghost mirrors her actions, though it now vanishes as it leaps into a wall, as the window was bricked up many years ago. Another female shade that totters around the building is the Victorian landlady.


 
 


Shapes

Location: Brighton - Fisherman's Rest public house

Further Comments: The landlord was reported to have caught ghostly activity on CCTV in this public house. Strange shapes are said to have been seen, and draughts rise and fall without apparent reason.


 
 


Steam

Location: Brighton - Former ABC Cinema, King's Road

Further Comments: This cinema operated from the site of an old Turkish bathhouse. Cinema staff would report the sound of running water and clouds of steam which appeared from nowhere.


 
 


Female Jailor

Further Comments: This woman has been seen on the steps leading down to the cellar, though locals say she hasn't put in an appearance recently.


 
 


Seventh Floor

Location: Brighton - Grand Hotel

Further Comments: The seventh floor of this hotel is said to be home to a phantom, although details are fleeting.


 
 


Glass Smashing

Location: Brighton - Ha! Ha! Bar, Pavilion Buildings

Further Comments: Noises and the breaking of glasses resulted in the owners calling in the ghost hunters in early 2001.


 
 


Taps

Location: Brighton - Hangleton Manor

Further Comments: A visitor to the manor felt a strong tap on her shoulder. Expecting it to be her boyfriend, she turned, but was alone in the room. There are several local legends about the manor, including hauntings by a horse and carriage, and a phantom woman.


 
 


Monk

Further Comments: A phantom monk is said to have been spotted on the first floor, while a ghostly girl lurks in a passage which leads to the toilets. An exorcism is reputed to have taken place many years ago which rid the site of the entities.


 
 


Tall Man

Further Comments: It is claimed that several ghosts haunt this building, including a tall man with a handlebar moustache, a small child, and a another figure who walks behind a stained glass window at the rear of the venue.
