Man in Black Cloak

Location: High Wycombe - White Hill
Type: Haunting Manifestation

Further Comments: A lorry driver and his mate reported hitting a man dressed in a black cloak on a misty winter's night along this road. They watched the figure go under the truck, but when the duo tried to find a body, the figure had vanished. When the police were informed, the officer told them that several other people had recently reported the same story along the road.

William Loosley's Abduction

Location: High Wycombe - Woodland near the town, but exact location non-existent

Date / Time: 4 / 5 October 1871 (fictitious)
Further Comments: A hoax penned by David Langford, the premise being that the great, great granddaughter of William Loosley discovered a hidden account of his UFO sighting on the 4 October 1871, one day before William mysteriously vanished forever.

Man in Green

Location: Hughenden Valley - Hughenden Crematorium, Four Ashes Lane
Type: Haunting Manifestation
Date / Time: 1986, 1978
Further Comments: Driver Mark Nursey was being followed by his girlfriend Allyson Bulpett in a separate car when they were both startled by a figure on the side of the road. The entity was said to be wearing what looked like a large green jumper, and although the figure was stooped with no head or hands visible, one witness estimated its height to be 5 foot 11 inches. After Allyson and Mark's story was published, another witness came forward who said they had seen the phantom in 1978, and thought they had run it over, although when they stopped the car, nothing could be seen.

Fertility Aid

Location: Ickford - Rising Sun public house

Date / Time: 2000s?
Further Comments: A stool in this pub is credited with helping 59 women become pregnant, after the popular press gave the seat national coverage when 14 local ladies who had sat upon it became mothers-to-be.

Old Willard

Location: Iver - St Peter's Church
Type: Haunting Manifestation
Date / Time: 1800s - 1970s
Further Comments: Willard was an eighteenth century verger who was punished for steeling gold coins from the church, despite pleading innocent. Several years after Willard's death, the real thief was found. Willard took to haunting the church but left after a vicar encountered the ghost and forgave it.

White Horse

Location: Ivinghoe - Ivinghoe Aston to Slapton Road
Type: Haunting Manifestation
Date / Time: Winter 1980/81
Further Comments: While travelling along this road during heavy rain at night, a taxi driver encountered someone riding a white horse. The driver had to stop abruptly to avoid the rider, and when the driver looked up, man and horse had vanished. When the witness later mentioned the encounter to other people, they said it was not the first time the entity had been seen.


Phantom highwayman.

Cooper

Location: Lacey Green - Coopers Grave (area of road), two stones at the junction of a bridleway
Type: Haunting Manifestation
Date / Time: Unknown
Further Comments: Cooper was a highwayman who, so successful at robbing the rich, died a wealthy man. Cooper was buried with his treasure along the road he committed many of his crimes, and the place post-mortem he continues to dwell.

Misty Woman

Location: Langley - Old almshouse near the church
Type: Haunting Manifestation
Date / Time: Late 1940s
Further Comments: A woman and her three children living at this almshouse heard knocks and bangs at night. A misty figure was also seen standing by a bookcase and standing over one the children's beds. A medium, Mr Plume, managed to calm the spirit and it was never seen or heard again.

Waving Woman

Location: Lillingstone Lovell - Outside St. Marys Church, road from village and A413
Type: Other
Date / Time: 07 August 2007
Further Comments: A family helped a woman in her mid-fifties, dressed in a black suit, outside the church as she complained of feeling unwell. The woman told the family that she had been to church to meet her fiance. After a short time the woman said she felt better, climbed into a purple Skoda, and drove away. The family entered their own car a drove in the opposite direction. Soon after, the purple Skoda appeared behind them, the woman inside waving at the family. As they turned southbound on the A413, the woman turned in the opposite direction, travelling on the wrong side of the road. The family spun their car around, concerned for the older driver, and chased after her, but she had vanished.

Highwayman

Location: Little Marlow - Crooked Billet public house

Further Comments: The phantom highwayman reputedly haunting this pub was hanged from a nearby tree.

The Whistling Milkman

Location: Marlow - Exact location unknown
Type: Haunting Manifestation
Date / Time: Unknown
Further Comments: The shade of the murdering milkman who had committed his ghastly crime in the neighbourhood was eventually laid by a local wise woman.

Racing Driver

Location: Marlow - Finnamore Wood
Type: Haunting Manifestation
Date / Time: Unknown
Further Comments: A phantom coach driver takes is said to dash through the wood, whipping his horses to breakneck speed.

Fast Moving Light

Location: Marlow - Skies over the town
Type: UFO
Date / Time: Circa 1999, summer, 02:00h
Further Comments: Two people in a garden watched a light in the sky as it moved fast, suddenly stop, and move back on itself before disappearing.

Blue Lady

Location: Medmenham - Medmenham Abbey
Type: Haunting Manifestation
Date / Time: Unknown
Further Comments: The first meeting ground for the Hell Fire Club, established in 1742 by Sir Francis Dashwood, the abbey is reportedly haunted by a glowing blue female form and a maid.

Handless Sir Edmund

Location: Middle Claydon - Claydon House
Type: Haunting Manifestation
Date / Time: Unknown
Further Comments: Having lost his hand during the Battle of Edgehill, Edmund Verney now searches the house for the missing item. A grey lady also walks the building, named by some as Florence Nightingale, and phantom footsteps are also reported.

Leaping Cat

Location: Milton Keynes - Bleak Hall area, close to railway bridge
Type: ABC

Further Comments: Two teenage friends heard something behind them and watched as a large black cat jumped out into the road. It made eye contact with the witnesses before jumping off again into woodland.

Rolling Barrels

Location: Milton Keynes - Old Bull public house, Fenny Stratford
Type: Haunting Manifestation
Date / Time: Twentieth century
Further Comments: A former landlord who would enter the cellar and find barrels and other stored items moved around decided to sprinkle powder across the floor - the barrels continued to be moved, but no footsteps were left.

Bangs

Location: Milton Keynes - Private residence along Vicarage Road, Bradwell
Type: Haunting Manifestation
Date / Time: 1970s
Further Comments: Residents of this property would hear bangs and loud noises coming from the empty upstairs rooms. Furnishings would also be moved at night and wardrobe doors would open and close.

No Ghost

Location: Milton Keynes - Theatre

Further Comments: An attempt to start a rumour that the theatre was haunted transpired to be a publicity stunt for a production.

Roman Soldiers

Location: Milton Keynes - Watling Street / London Road, Stony Stratford
Type: Haunting Manifestation
Date / Time: 1980s
Further Comments: Roman soldiers were said to march along this street, their legs partly covered by the tarmac as if following the height of the old Roman road.

Further Comments: A former hideout of the highwayman Dick Turpin, both he and his dark horse were once seen in the area - even after his death.

Summoning the Fairies

Location: Newport Pagnell - Barrow in the area

Further Comments: Running around this barrow nine times is said to bring forth the fairies.

Falling Hulk Hogan

Location: Newport Pagnell - No 38 Vintage Emporium
Type: Poltergeist
Date / Time: 2023
Further Comments: Items have been moved and thrown around this former pub apparently unaided by human hand, including a Hulk Hogan figure (the incident caught on video and shared on local media).

Tapping

Location: Newton Longville - Telephone box outside St Faith's Church graveyard
Type: Haunting Manifestation
Date / Time: Late twentieth century
Further Comments: Users of this telephone box have reported the sound of footsteps walking up to it and someone rapping on the glass, even though nothing can be seen.

Marching Legion

Further Comments: Thought to be an old Roman road, stories are still told that a legion continues to march through the area.
