Shakespeare's Grave

Further Comments: The tomb of Shakespeare has the following curse written upon it: Good frend for Jesus sake forebeare, To digg the dust encloased heare; Bleste be the man that spares thes stones, And curst be he that moves my bones.

Lucy and Friends

Location: Stratford-upon-Avon - Mercure Hotel
Type: Haunting Manifestation
Date / Time: Twenty-first century
Further Comments: A few entities are said to haunt this location. A member of staff claimed to have spotted an old soldier running down a corridor, while Lucy haunts one of the rooms, having committed suicide after an assault.

Crashing Sounds

Location: Stratford-upon-Avon - Private residence
Type: Poltergeist
Date / Time: 2000s
Further Comments: Strange sounds at this site ranged from disembodied footsteps to what was thought to be intruders smashing up the lower part of the house. On resident fled the house after hearing the front door open and close, followed by footsteps running up the staircase.

Further Comments: A local legend says that the river is haunted by a woman who stands waist-deep in the water.

Five Fliers

Location: Stratford-upon-Avon - Skies over the town centre

Date / Time: 21 July 2007
Further Comments: Over 100 people watched five objects moving over the town centre for a period of around thirty minutes. One witness said three of the lights formed a triangle, another hovered to one side, while the fifth light darted around. Another witness claimed they looked like little balls of flame.

Further Comments: A museum/magic shop, The Creaky Cauldron claims the upper part of the building is haunted by a six year old child named Jack.

White Horse

Location: Stratford-upon-Avon - Walton Hall Hotel
Type: Haunting Manifestation
Date / Time: 09 October, every five years (reoccurring)
Further Comments: This pale riderless horse gallops over the gardens, twice a decade. The hotel itself is haunted by a young man, who some speculate to be the former rider of the horse.


Location: Stretton Baskerville - General area
Type: Haunting Manifestation
Date / Time: Early twentieth century
Further Comments: A highwayman, some say Dick Turpin himself, hid some of his takings in this deserted medieval village. He died before managing to retrieve the money, and now he rides towards the village on horseback.

John Alcock

Location: Temple Grafton - Alcocks Arbour (aka Rolls Wood Hill), Croft Lane
Type: Legend - Old Nick
Date / Time: Present
Further Comments: Highwayman John Alcock stashed much of his ill-gotten gains in a cave under this hill, in a chest protected by three locks and guarded by a cockerel. The bird will only let treasure hunters pass if they possessed one of Alcock's bones. Another legend says that the hill was created by the Devil. Out picking nuts on Devil's Nutting Day (21 September), Old Nick stumbled across the Virgin Mary who ordered him to drop the nuts. The Devil did, and so the hill was created.

Lying Landlord

Location: Warwick - Anchor Inn
Type: Legend

Further Comments: A former landlord of the inn was involved in looting the dead bodies from the Battle of Edgehill; during a trial to establish his guilt in which the crook lied through his teeth, the Devil appeared and took the man straight to hell.

Piers Gaveston

Location: Warwick - Blacklow Hill

Further Comments: The execution procession of Gaveston is still said to ascend the hill where he was stabbed with a sword before being beheaded.

Smelly Nun

Location: Warwick - Digby Court
Type: Haunting Manifestation
Date / Time: 1820s
Further Comments: Haunted by a nun who looked like a corpse and smelled of death and decay, Digby Court remained empty for many, many years.

Thomas Oken

Location: Warwick - Doll Museum, Castle Street
Type: Haunting Manifestation
Date / Time: Twentieth century
Further Comments: Heard climbing the stairs of his former property, Oken's popularity with the townsfolk may have something to do with his staying on.


Location: Warwick - Gibbet Hill - University of Warwick Halls of Residence
Type: Haunting Manifestation
Date / Time: Late twentieth century
Further Comments: The sounds of someone crying hysterically could occasionally be heard in this modern building. It was reported that the newer halls of residence were built upon a demolished building which housed the bodies of those executed on the hill.

Further Comments: A man claimed to have seen a nun-like entity rise from the ground and pass through a set of railings before vanishing. The figure was said to glow and appeared to be missing a hand.

Cursed Castle

Location: Warwick - Warwick Castle
Type: Shuck
Date / Time: Unknown
Further Comments: After being caught stealing from her customers, an old servant at the castle was fired. In revenge, she bewitched the place - a large black dog appeared and created havoc. The creature was defeated by quotes from the bible read aloud by a local holy man.

Sir Fulke Greville

Location: Warwick - Warwick Castle
Type: Haunting Manifestation
Date / Time: 1973, and March 2009
Further Comments: Murdered by a trusted servant, Sir Fulke is reputed to still spend time in his study, appearing in a misty form. In 1973, a cleaner reported hearing loud scratching sounds coming from a painting of Greville, while in 2009 a site manager working on a 'dungeon' feature encountered a tall slim man wearing tunic and trousers.

The Dun Cow

Location: Warwick - Warwick Castle
Type: Crisis Manifestation
Date / Time: Prior to death in the Warwick family
Further Comments: Appearing at least once at the castle prior to a death in the family, the phantom 'Dun Cow of Warwick' appears a few weeks before a death in the family. Way back in history, a member of the Warwick family killed the giant cow when it was a living creature that terrorised people across the land.

Slow Moving Light

Location: Warwick - Warwick University, JM3 Building, central corridor, top floor
Type: Other
Date / Time: 1994
Further Comments: A slow moving and completely silent ball of bright light was seen by a couple of witnesses as it floated across one room, through a wall and into the next room.


Location: Wellesbourne - Former RAF base

Further Comments: This member of the RAF ran into the rotating blades of a stationary aircraft - his shade has been seen and heard retracing his final steps.

Sir Guy

Location: Weston - Guy's Cliffe manor house
Type: Haunting Manifestation
Date / Time: Unknown
Further Comments: Mentally changed by exposure to medieval warfare, Sir Guy returned to his castle from the Crusades, only to live as a hermit in his garden. His ghost has been seen in the area.


Location: Whitacre Heath - Halloughton Grange Lane

Date / Time: 1930s and January 2010, around 20:45h
Further Comments: During the 1930s a cyclist heading towards Kingsbury along this road swerved to avoid a nurse as she stepped out in front of him - he failed and passed straight through her. The encounter left him shaken, and when he finally spoke of the incident, he was told that a nurse had been killed in an accident on the spot several years previous. In 2010 a transparent figure in a cape was seen standing by the roadside where the road folks - once again the witness was left shaken.

Mr Goddard

Location: Whitestone - Private house along Gypsy Lane
Type: Haunting Manifestation
Date / Time: November (reoccurring)
Further Comments: A former owner of a house along here, Mr Goddard returned after his garden was split in half and a new property built on the site. He makes his presence known by opening locked doors, moving items around rooms, and shorting out electrical items.

Blood of George

Location: Wixford - George's Elm Lane, elm tree
Type: Legend
Date / Time: Unknown if tree still present
Further Comments: The tree was said to have grown from a stake driven into the heart of a man buried here named George (some legends say Saint George). The tree would bleed if cut.

Lady Agatha?

Location: Wroxall - Wroxall Abbey Hotel

Date / Time: Unknown
Further Comments: The 'haunted' status of this hotel appears mainly to be limited to review websites, with one person providing the name Lady Agatha as the entity.
