Hole Cutter

Location: Robertsbridge - Seven Stars Inn

Further Comments: During the 1980s, this noisy ghost cut holes in bed sheets, played with the connectors on barrels of beer, and pushed items off shelves. A new landlord who took over in 2013 called a paranormal group to investigate what his family had experienced, including items that moved unaided. The pub is also said to be haunted by a red monk.

White Child

Location: Robertsbridge - Stream running through village

Further Comments: Having drowned in the stream many years ago, this little girl now appears if the stream floods.

Grey Shadowy Girl

Location: Rodmell - Abergavenny Arms public house
Type: Haunting Manifestation
Date / Time: 1990s
Further Comments: Appearing in front of the fireplace and in the men's toilet, this fleeting female form is also blamed for ringing the 'last orders' bells in the early hours of the morning.

Young Girl

Location: Rotherfield - The King's Arms
Type: Haunting Manifestation
Date / Time: Late June (reoccurring)
Further Comments: The spirit of a young girl is reported to frequent this building - she has been felt tugging clothing, and mysterious bare feet were once seen running along a corridor.


Location: Rudgwick - Downs link footpath about halfway between Rudgwick and Slinfold

Further Comments: Two women walking along this path heard the 'click-clacking' of a train along the track slowly rising in volume and the whistle belonging to an old fashioned steam locomotive. The sounds faded away. The site once had a railway line running through it, although it closed in 1965.

Shadow on Stool

Further Comments: This ghostly shadow has been observed sitting by the bar - its history is unknown.

Hubert Parry

Location: Rustington - Knight's Croft
Type: Post-Mortem Manifestation

Further Comments: The famous composer of 'Jerusalem' appeared once after death in his former home, looking around while smiling, before vanishing.

Old Man in Black

Location: Rye - Bed & Breakfast, name withheld
Type: Haunting Manifestation
Date / Time: Summer 2002
Further Comments: A couple staying at this bed and breakfast reported seeing an old man dressed in black standing over their bed, looking angry and agitated. Both dismissed the shade as a dream until they spoke to each other the following morning and realised both had seen the ghost.

Man in Top Hat & Tails

Location: Rye - Fletchers House, Lions Street
Type: Haunting Manifestation
Date / Time: Unknown
Further Comments: This old man has been seen on the landing, before heading off into the toilet and vanishing.


Location: Rye - Gibbet's Marsh
Type: Haunting Manifestation
Date / Time: Between midnight & 03:00h (reoccurring)
Further Comments: Seen several times around the early hours of the morning, this figure is watched as he walks across the field and heads towards the river.

Location: Rye - Lamb House

Date / Time: Early twentieth century
Further Comments: One time home of Henry James, he claimed that the ghost of an old lady here gave him assistance whilst writing. Other owners have reported poltergeist like activity, and while sitting in the garden, EF Benson watched a man in a cape walk by before vanishing. One story says the building is also haunted by Allen Grebell, who was murdered by a butcher.


Location: Rye - Mermaid Inn

Further Comments: Several shades haunt this public house. A pair of ghostly duellers have been seen engaging each other with rapiers (the victor then drags the body through the hotel and drops it through a trapdoor), while a female figure dressed in grey haunts the upper part of the building. Room 5 is one of her haunts, while in rooms 10 and 18, a fading man has been seen entering and leaving (often through a wall).

Line of Monks

Location: Rye - Monastery Hall

Date / Time: Late 1940s
Further Comments: The ghostly monks which haunted the hall and garden may have been related to several skeletons dug up in the garden; evidence pointed to the burials being performed on living people.


Location: Rye - Needles Passage, off Ports Street

Further Comments: Echoing footsteps have been heard approaching witnesses as they walk down is passageway, though no one is visible as they pass.


Location: Rye - Reysons Farm

Further Comments: Loud footsteps have been heard moving up and down the staircase in the farmhouse, and the phantom of a man has also been reported moving about the house at night.

Little Girl Lost

Location: Rye - The Union Inn, East Street

Further Comments: Seen walking in the restaurant and kitchen of this old building, this little ghost is often mistaken for someone real.

Two Women

Location: Rye - Town Centre
Type: Haunting Manifestation

Further Comments: Several spectres are said to haunt this area of town. The two women have been observed walking down Mermaid Street wearing long gowns, while a lonesome girl in blue has been seen crossing the street. Watchbell Street is the haunt of a little boy dressed in a white sheet, and also disembodied footsteps (thought to be a young girl's), through these are no longer heard, and the Olde Tuck Shoppe along Market Street is home to a lady in grey.

Gobbling Monk

Location: Rye - Turkey Cock Lane

Further Comments: This lane is apparently named after the sounds a monk made when he went mad; this was after he was bricked up alive for trying to elope. He is still seen on the odd occasion, though no longer heard.

Kitchen Ghost

Location: Rye - White Vine Hotel
Type: Poltergeist
Date / Time: November 1995 onwards
Further Comments: The kitchen has had its contents rearranged several times, and various food stuffs mixed up and hidden. Sometimes the activities migrate towards the bedrooms, though they always come back.

Peddling Nurse

Location: Salehurst - Area of Northbridge Street and St Mary church
Type: Haunting Manifestation
Date / Time: Unknown
Further Comments: The nurse died during the 1930's, falling off her bicycle and breaking her neck. She is now seen on her bike, rushing towards observers, quickly fading from view moments from impact.

Old Man in Bedroom

Location: Salehurst - Row of three cottages in village (middle one), identified by stone with engraved 'ESC'

Further Comments: This farmer has reportedly been seen over the past two hundred years.

Sad Little Boy

Location: Seaford - Corsica Hall

Further Comments: This gloomy lad has been seen near the kitchens; it is thought he is the son of Lord Napier who accidentally shot his father's chaplain.


Location: Seaford - Crypt under the Folly

Further Comments: This phantom was said to open the door, take a quick walk around the area and then leaves.

Car Crash

Location: Seaford - Road along coastline

Date / Time: October 1976
Further Comments: A couple out walking watched a car as it lost control and hit a three foot high sea wall - it passed straight through, and disappeared on the other side.

Man in Brown

Location: Selmeston - Sherrington Manor
Type: Crisis Manifestation
Date / Time: 1950s
Further Comments: This ghostly figure, top-to-toe in brown clothing, is widely thought to be a monk. A female figure is said to appear when someone is sick in the house.
