Further Comments: The area around this village was once home to ghostly lights (most likely combusting marsh gas) that danced around at night.

White Lady

Location: Tangham - Forest
Type: Unknown Ghost Type
Date / Time: Late nineteenth or early twentieth century
Further Comments: A man driving a horse and cart through the woods was startled by the appearance of a white lady on the seat next to him - she vanished as he drove past the last tree of the forest. This story could be seen as an early version of the phantom hitchhiker tales.

The Pink Lady

Location: Thornham - Field near the camp site

Further Comments: Returning from a penny reading in the reading room, Emma Berry drowned in the village stream. Her shade walks her final route...

Horse & Cart on Driveway

Location: Thornham - Lord Henniker's Gravel Driveway
Type: Haunting Manifestation
Date / Time: Late twentieth century
Further Comments: The present Lord's father tells stories of hearing horses and wheels on the gravel driveway; on investigation, there was nothing ever seen.

Old Lady with Young Daughter

Location: Thornham Magna - The Four Horseshoes Inn
Type: Haunting Manifestation
Date / Time: Unknown when last seen, last activity reported 18 March 2006
Further Comments: Stories of the pair of ghosts in this building date back hundreds of years, though their personal history is unknown. A witness sleeping at the inn reported strange banging waking them up, just prior to their TV set switching itself on.

Two Monks

Location: Thornham Parva - Road heading towards the village
Type: Haunting Manifestation
Date / Time: 1975
Further Comments: A male witness reported cycling home towards the village at one night when he passed by two hooded figures in monks garb and a white dog. The two figures raised a hand and wished the man goodnight, but when he looked directly the pair, the witness realised the inside of the hoods were empty - the monks had no heads.

Creature with Many Humps

Location: Thorpeness - Off coast
Type: Cryptozoology

Further Comments: Witnessed by three women, this creature was said to move at great speed.

Stopping Force

Location: Tostock - Path on hill leading to the church
Type: Haunting Manifestation
Date / Time: Summer, late 1990s
Further Comments: Two people walking towards the church suddenly found themselves unable to walk any further. The sensation lasted for around ten seconds before lifting. A short time later, along a lane past the church, they spotted a bright white light which then illuminated the area around them. Both witnesses ran back to the village.

Man in Black with Tall Hat

Location: Trimley St Martin - Field near T junction, wire fence with trees

Further Comments: Mistaken as a local farmer by a metal detector enthusiast, the man in black disappeared when approached.

Vanishing Cyclist

Location: Tuddenham - Finn Lane

Further Comments: While walking her dogs, one woman looked behind her to see a cyclist peddling behind her. He wore modern clothing and a cycle helmet. The woman moved to the side of the lane to let him pass, but the cyclist had vanished.

Cat Crossing Road

Location: Tunstall Forest - Road cutting through the area
Type: ABC
Date / Time: 20 April 2004
Further Comments: While driving through the forest, this woman saw a large unidentified cat cross the road ahead of her. She reported it was between 4.5 feet - 5.5 feet in length, including the tail. When it was mentioned to a forest warden later in the day, he said it was not an uncommon report in that particular area.


Location: Walberswick - Anchor Inn

Further Comments: The Anchor Inn was once home to a noisy spirit. What happened to the entity is unclear.


Location: Walberswick - Bell Inn

Further Comments: The fisherman has been seen sitting in the smoking room of the public house, though it has not been recognised as a ghost until it has disappeared.

The Walberswick Whistle

Location: Walberswick - General area
Type: Haunting Manifestation

Further Comments: Believed to come from a nearby group of holes, the whistle is said to scare animals. Different stories attribute the cause to varying legends; the most likely candidate is the wind whipping around a group of underground caverns, though some still believe the scream to belong to a woman lost in the caves below.

Old Man and Boy waiting for Ferry

Location: Walberswick - Landing stage of river

Date / Time: 1950s
Further Comments: Observed by a woman in the 1950's, the young boy and an old man have been watched as they crossed the river on a ferry, disappearing as they entered an unnatural fog bank. They are supposed to have drowned a couple of hundred years ago, while crossing in similar circumstances.

Phantom Dog, Calf Size

Location: Walberswick - Road between the Bell Hotel and the Vicarage, and the beach leading to Dunwich
Type: Shuck
Date / Time: 1500s onwards
Further Comments: For four hundred years, a black shuck has been reported in the area, local legend stating that it is the Devil incarnate. The creature has most been recently witnessed by two women during the 1980s; they reported seeing a large phantom dog, black in colour and the size of a calf.

Something Invisible

Location: Walberswick - Site of old railway line (aka dead mans gully)

Further Comments: The area's history is unknown, but animals are known to become quite upset if forced to pass through the locality.

Victorian Church Warden

Location: Walberswick - Walberswick Church
Type: Unknown Ghost Type
Date / Time: 1930s, 1970s
Further Comments: Witnessed by George Orwell, a small and stooping figure dressed like a workman was seen silently crossing the churchyard, before disappearing from view. Orwell investigated further, and realised that the figure had vanished. Others who have seen the figure have described him as dressed like a gentleman.

Equine Entities

Location: Walberswick - Walberswick Common

Further Comments: Said to be heard only during the day, phantom horses gallop across the common. In addition, reports of a phantom man have been frequent since the 1940s, appearing both on the common and in the church ruins.

Phantom Coach

Location: Wangford - SW of Thetford - Raydon Hall, Quay Lane
Type: Haunting Manifestation
Date / Time: Unknown
Further Comments: A coach pulled by a headless horse runs down Quay Lane on dark nights, believed to be driven by a former owner of Raydon Hall.

Lady in Long Silver Dress

Location: Wenhaston - Ruins of Westwood Lodge

Date / Time: Unknown
Further Comments: Rumoured to be a site where witchcraft is still practised, the woman in a long silver dress is said to be one of many ghosts that haunt the area.

Mary Rose Tudor

Location: Westhorpe - Westhorpe Lodge

Further Comments: This building may contain the ghost of Henry VIII's sister.

Fairy Loaves

Location: Westleton - Common
Type: Fairy
Date / Time: Circa nineteenth century
Further Comments: It was once believed that fossilised sea urchins that were found in a gravel pit here were actually loaves of bread made by fairies.

Witch's Stone

Location: Westleton - St Peter's Church
Type: Legend
Date / Time: Still present
Further Comments: Standing by the chancel door, this stone is said to be used to summon the ghost of a witch. Any object placed in a hole in the wall above the stone would vanish after the owner ran around the church seven times, and the chinking of chains would echo around the area. Legend has it that grass will not grow in the area.


Location: Westleton - Unnamed cottage next to churchyard

Further Comments: A couple living in the cottage would hear sounds coming from their garden that resembled a donkey with a clanking chain. When investigated, they could never find anything.
