Further Comments: It was once believed that a golden coffin was contained within the barrow, and any attempt to remove it would fail.


 
Dwarf

Further Comments: This little man is said to stand guard over a fabulous wealth, once concealed from greedy men.


 
White Woman

Location: Churchill (Oxfordshire) - Crossroads close to Lyneham Longbarrow
Type: Haunting Manifestation

Further Comments: A white female phantom is said to walk this area. It is unclear whether the ghost is that of an old woman who once lived in a nearby cave and watched over a hoard of treasure.


 
Calf

Further Comments: A golden calf is said to be buried under a hill in the area, possibly under a barrow.


 
Wealthy Farmer

Location: Clopton (Suffolk) - Farm next to Clopton Hall

Further Comments: The ghost of a farmer whose wealth was never discovered is said to still be around the area, waiting for a person willing to follow him to the hidden money.


 
Treasure Guardian

Location: Cockermouth (Cumbria) - Tallentire

Further Comments: A decapitated female ghost was reported to stand guard over a hidden hoard of gold near the tower of this building.


 
Golden Calf

Location: Compton (Berkshire) - Perborough Castle

Further Comments: Buried under this earthworks is reputed to be a golden calf.


 
Treasure

Location: Copythorne (Hampshire) - Barrow Hill (aka Money Hills), Stonyford

Further Comments: This area is said to contain hidden wealth.


 
Kettle Gold

Location: Corgarff (Moray) - Well at the base of a steep hill (unsure if still present)
Type: Legend
Date / Time: Early nineteenth century
Further Comments: This well was fed from three springs, one curing deafness, the second blindness, the third lameness, although the price of removing an ailment was gold. An entity administered the area, storing donations in a kettle which was buried under what was known as the Kettle Stone. Anyone who tried to remove the stone and steal the gold would die a terrible death soon after.


 
Rustling Woman

Location: Cornwood (Devon) - Fardel Hall (also called Fardell Hall), area between hall and nearby bridge

Further Comments: Dressed in dark clothing, this feminine shade protects a hoard of buried treasure. The silk of the ghost's dress can normally be heard in the wind. One field in the area is said to be impossible to cultivate.

Location: Cowbridge (South Glamorgan) - Nash Manor House

Further Comments: The site was once believed to be haunted by a ghost which would extinguish a light in a certain room. Another legend said that a spot close to the house contained buried treasure.


 
Seven Year Treasure

Location: Crail (Fife) - Coastline

Date / Time: Unknown if still occurring
Further Comments: If one was to walk along this coastline before dawn every day for seven years, on the last day of the period, one would find enough treasure to ensure they lived comfortably for the rest of their life.


 
Man in the Golden Chair

Location: Culross (Fife) - Abbey
Type: Legend
Date / Time: Unknown
Further Comments: A secret tunnel near here was once believed to lead to a room full of gold and jewels, looked after by an old man who waited in a golden chair to hand over the wealth to whoever found it first. A piper and his dog were once sent in to investigate the tunnel - a short time later, the dog came out terrified and the man was never seen again.


 
Green Lady

Location: Curdworth (West Midlands) - St Nicholas Church
Type: Haunting Manifestation

Further Comments: This ghostly tall woman, wearing a green dress, is said to search the graveyard for the remains of her Royalist husband. The second myth from this church concerns a great treasure that is said to have been buried here along with human remains from a Civil War battle. Unfortunately the hoard is protected by a headless phantom that intervenes if anyone comes too close to discovering it.


 
Treasure Protector

Location: Dallinghoo (Suffolk) - High gate post - exact location not known
Type: Haunting Manifestation

Further Comments: Little is known about this ghost, other than he is said to protect a hoard of treasure, and twelve clergymen failed to exorcise him. Maybe the clergymen were more successful than they believed - the legend dates back to at least 1893, but in April 2008 a hoard of golden coins were discovered in farm land in the village.


 
Dazzling Woman

Location: Darchet (Berkshire) - Old Monastery between Darchet and Old Windsor
Type: Haunting Manifestation

Further Comments: A woman bathed in dazzling white was seen close to these ruins. A myth says that a golden carriage is buried somewhere nearby.


 
Guardian Monster

Location: Dartmoor (Devon) - Chaw Gully
Type: Legend

Further Comments: Protecting a hoard of treasure, this beast has teamed up with a raven which calls out if anyone comes too close to the gold. The beast will then wait until a rope is lowered into the pit and then sever it when the treasure hunter is climbing down. The body would always be found outside the hole in the morning.


 
Golden Coffin

Location: Dealand (Dorset) - Wor barrow (aka Worbarrow)

Further Comments: This barrow was once believed to have contained a coffin of solid gold - excavations have never found such an item.


 
Hidden Cave

Location: Delvin (County Westmeath) - Unknown hill in the area, (off the road to Ballinlough?)

Further Comments: A secret entrance on the hill leads to a hidden cave which contains treasure, so the story goes.


 
White Spotted Dog

Location: Diamor (County Meath) - Moat

Further Comments: A secret room in the moat was said to contain nine kegs of gold protected by a large black dog with a white spot. The only way to escape with the gold was to stab the dog three times with a dagger to the white spot.


 
Buried Boulder

Location: Digby (Lincolnshire) - Exact location unknown - somewhere on the edge of the fen, near the Dorrington boundary

Further Comments: This large stone is said to have buried itself, and underneath is hidden treasure.


 
Fairy Treasure

Location: Dinghurst (Somerset) - Dolebury Warren hillfort

Further Comments: Dressed in red cloth, the fairies would keep an eye on their treasure buried under the hillfort. Fairy pipes were said to have been found around the site.


 
Flying Beast

Location: Dolbury (aka Dolebury) (Devon) - Exe valley between Dolbury Hill & Cadbury Hill
Type: Dragon

Further Comments: In order to guard his treasure, buried under both hills, this beast flies between the locations each night.


 
Treasure Guardians

Further Comments: A team of mermaids and mermen are reported to guard a hidden cave full of treasure.


 
Golden Cradle

Location: East Harling (Norfolk) - Pilgrim's Meadow
Type: Legend

Further Comments: With its location now covered now covered by trees, this mythical treasure is unlikely to be found any time soon.
