White Lady

Further Comments: This female form causes trouble on the roads as she drifts out in front on oncoming traffic. Some witnesses say the entity is more like a monk than a woman and a cyclist who spotted the figure in the road in 1960 said the phantom figure was twice the height of a normal person.

Large Black Figure

Location: Manchester (Lancashire) - Parsonage Road, Withington

Further Comments: This entity is said to have emerged from an old disused house on the corner of Parsonage Road and Swinbourne Grove and give chase to a couple of passers-by.

Pounding Hooves

Location: Manifold Valley (Staffordshire) - Road leading to Throwley Hall (no longer standing)

Further Comments: The local stories state that many years ago, a coach returning guests to the hall crashed along the road, killing all on board. The horses (and sometimes the wheels of the coach) can still be heard on occasion, thundering along the road.

Old Woman

Location: Manningford (Wiltshire) - Hare Street

Further Comments: Some believed this phantom woman was cursed to walk the earth after selling her soul to the Devil.

Woman in White

Location: Mansfield (Nottinghamshire) - A60 and area around Hall Place (no longer standing)
Type: Haunting Manifestation
Date / Time: 1950s onwards
Further Comments: This phantom woman in a white dress is thought to have once haunted Hall Place before it burnt down - her ghost has now migrated to the nearby road.

Timothy

Location: Mansfield (Nottinghamshire) - Oak Tree public house and Southwell Road West

Further Comments: Timothy was hanged for a crime he did not commit at gallows which once stood nearby - his shade still lurks along the roadside and in the pub, protesting his innocence to any who will listen.

Victorian Nurse

Location: Mansfield (Nottinghamshire) - Ransom Hospital

Further Comments: Said to haunt the building, this Victorian nurse reputedly took her life after her love was rejected by a doctor. Unfortunately, the hospital was not constructed until circa 1948, so little credence should be given to this story.

Dame Flogan

Location: Mansfield (Nottinghamshire) - White Hart Inn, White Hart Street, and Dame Flogan Street

Further Comments: Flogan was killed in an accident near the inn, her body dragged a short distance by a horse. The ghost is said to haunt the roads and the inn itself.

Monk

Location: Mansfield (Nottinghamshire) - Ye Olde Ramme public house

Further Comments: A monk that haunts this building may have some connection to the nearby church - a secret tunnel is said to link the two buildings.

Gilbert

Location: Marden (Kent) - Road to Hawkhurst
Type: Haunting Manifestation
Date / Time: 24 December (reoccurring)
Further Comments: Gilbert, an eighteenth century highwayman who tried to rob a coach, was stabbed to death by one of the occupants after she recognised him as having killed her brother. The killing drove the woman mad. The scene was said to silently re-enact every Christmas Eve.

Headless Figure

Location: Marden (Wiltshire) - Pond (now filled in) at woodland once known as Pook Shipton?

Further Comments: A figure carrying their head was said to emerge from a pond and walk along a footpath.

Headless Soldier

Location: Market Bosworth (Leicestershire) - Lanes of village

Further Comments: Having been decapitated in the Battle of Bosworth Field, this fighter wanders the roads and lanes looking for his missing head.

Shadowy Figure

Location: Market Drayton (Shropshire) - Country lane known as 'the rudge', Ashley

Date / Time: November 2003
Further Comments: A shadowy figure which quickly and silently vanishes has been observed in this area. A pedestrian was said to have felt a heavy weight climb onto his back as he walked down the lane.

Coach

Location: Marlborough (Wiltshire) - Granham Hill

Date / Time: Last sighting unknown, but said to appear at midnight
Further Comments: This coach, driven by a decapitated horseman, manifests on the stroke of midnight and travels through a tiny gap in a hedge.

Funeral Procession

Location: Marnhull (Dorset) - Area near quarry, and/or Sackmore Lane
Type: Haunting Manifestation
Date / Time: Always at midnight, thought the date changes
Further Comments: This line of mourners following a black horse drawn carriage has been reported travelling the roads in Marnhull. Another report states that there are only two pallbearers, and they are more likely to be seen along Sackmore Lane.

Troops

Location: Marston Moor (Yorkshire) - General area
Type: Haunting Manifestation
Date / Time: November 1932, and possibly foggy nights (reoccurring)
Further Comments: Seen crossing the road in front of a car, these figures looked ragged and battle weary, dressed in clothing that matched that of the 1644 Battle of Marston Moor. Local reports say the battle is sometimes replayed in full, normally on foggy nights. On one occasion prior to the twentieth century, two fiery pillars were seen in the sky at midday, accompanied by the fighting armies. After some time, the northern army defeated the southern forces, after which troops and pillars vanished.

Two figures

Location: Matfield (Kent) - Maidstone Road

Further Comments: Two tall figures darted out in front of a car driving along this road in the early hours of the morning. The driver braked hard to avoid them, and they seemed to vanish.

Girl in Orange

Location: Meopham (Kent) - Steel Lane

Further Comments: A French girl who fell head over heels in love with a soldier was rejected by him and hanged herself - it is she who now haunts this road, dressed in a rustling orange silk dress.

Young Woman in Long Silk Dress

Location: Mersea Island (Essex) - Dawes Lane
Type: Post-Mortem Manifestation
Date / Time: Early twentieth century
Further Comments: A couple out walking watched a woman wearing a bonnet and a long silk dress approach them. They noticed she made little sound, and when the girl walked into a cornfield, the crops didn't move around her. The young woman then disappeared.

Roman Soldiers

Location: Mersea Island (Essex) - East Mersea Road, near Causeway
Type: Haunting Manifestation
Date / Time: Twentieth century
Further Comments: Quite possibly the oldest ghosts seen in the UK, a number of sightings exist of Roman soldiers around the island. A woman reported that while walking back to her home late one night, she was closely followed by the ghost of a man dressed as Roman soldier.

Red Stagecoach

Location: Mevagissey (Cornwall) - Road between Mevagissey and Truro
Type: Haunting Manifestation
Date / Time: Twentieth century
Further Comments: A driver along this road closed his eyes and prepared for a crash when this eighteenth century coach driven by four horses appeared in front of him - but the accident never happened, as the coach vanished into thin air. The witness later said he had also seen the driver and a guard on the coach.

Transparent Man

Location: Midhurst (Sussex) - Approach to town on the A286
Type: Haunting Manifestation
Date / Time: October 1999
Further Comments: An early morning driver along this part of the A286 slowed to let a man in a tricorn hat finish crossing the road, only to notice that he could see right through the pedestrian. The ghost then disappeared into the trees on the opposite side of the road.

Motorbike

Location: Milford (Surrey) - A3, Milford Junction
Type: Haunting Manifestation
Date / Time: 6 November 2010, approx 20:00h
Further Comments: An off duty police officer driving home was forced to brake and swerve to avoid an oncoming motorcycle on the wrong side of the road. Seconds after stopping the driver looked into his mirrors but there was nothing to be seen. The driver also remembered looking to the right as he swerved, seeing the headlight from the side but the rest of the bike was not visible.

Floating Woman

Location: Millom (Cumbria) - Railway Bridge

Date / Time: 1990, 23:00h
Further Comments: A local story says that a woman leapt from the bridge during the Second World War after hearing that her husband had died in battle. Some fifty years later, a witness spotted a woman in old fashioned clothing hovering above a hedge next to the bridge. The figure appeared to be missing her legs.

Car

Further Comments: Though there are no reports of fatal accidents at this location, the area is reportedly haunted by a car that hits vehicles, bumping them, but leaving no marks.
