Cryptozoology tends to be split into two areas of study. The first deals with animals which are classified from fossil evidence, but are currently considered extinct. The classic example of this type is the Thylacine; the creature officially died out in the early twentieth century, though sightings of the Australian animal still occur today. OOP (Out of Place) creatures are also categorised under this heading, such as the hundreds of Alien Big Cats sightings reported in the UK each year.

The second area of research examines creatures for which no tangible evidence exists, but are carried down the ages in the form of folk stories and myths, or the witness reports are too fantastic to be readily accepted. The following list is a collection of both types of report.

Muirdris

Location: Dundrum (County Down) - Dundrum Bay, was known as Lough Rudraige
Type: Cryptozoology
Date / Time: Unknown
Further Comments: When Fergus mac Léti, a king of Ulster, first encountered the monster known as Muirdris, his face was left permanently contorted in terror. To prevent the king from finding out, all mirrors were banned in his company. Seven years later, Fergus discovered the truth and returned to Dundrum Bay to kill the monster. After a battle which lasted two days, the king killed the beast but himself died soon after from exhaustion.


Enchanted Eel

Location: Dunkettle (County Cork) - Lake close to small graveyard
Type: Cryptozoology
Date / Time: Unknown
Further Comments: This eel must have been of great size, as it terrorised the neighbourhood, eating sheep and cattle. A man tending the graveyard encountered the creature one morning and severed its tail with a hook. Enraged, the creature attacked but the man managed to run away. What happened to the creature after that is undocumented, but the man in question died a few days later, and one of the headstones in the graveyard is said to be decorated with a hook and an eel.


Water Horse

Location: Dunmanway (County Cork) - Lake Attariff
Type: Cryptozoology
Date / Time: June 1963 (or 1966)
Further Comments: Mr W J. Wood was trout fishing at this lough when he observed a three metre long dark brown creature some ninety metres away. Wood said that the creature had a head like a calf which was held above the water line. After a couple of minutes, the creature sank beneath the water. A Japanese film crew visited the lake in 2004 to search for the monster said to live here.


Captured Fisherman

Location: Dunnet Bay (Highland) - Underwater sea cave
Type: Cryptozoology
Date / Time: Unknown
Further Comments: A good looking fisherman once caught the eye of a mermaid who fell in love with him - she kidnapped the fellow and held him in a secret cave under the sea, where he remains to this day...


Long Serpent

Location: Dunrobin (Highland) - Off coast
Type: Cryptozoology
Date / Time: 1873
Further Comments: Observed several times around this period, this creature would remain visible for long periods of time.


Dun Cow

Location: Dunsmore Heath (Warwickshire) - Fields in the area
Type: Cryptozoology
Date / Time: Unknown
Further Comments: Said to have been used to scare children into going to bed, the Dun Cow of Dunsmore Heath was of massive size, and sported eighteen teats. The beast was slain by Guy of Warwick.


Hairy Creature

Location: E11 (Greater London) - Hollow Ponds area, Epping Forest, Wanstead
Type: Cryptozoology
Date / Time: November 2008
Further Comments: During an evening fishing trip, Michael Kent reported encountering a dark hairy figure, standing around four foot tall. The creature vanished into the bushes.


Short Hairy Creature

Location: E18 (Greater London) - Love Lane area, Woodford Bridge
Type: Cryptozoology
Date / Time: November 2008
Further Comments: A local paper reported that Irene Dainty encountered a four foot, hairy creature with large feet and animal-like eyes close to her home. The creature ran off and jumped over the wall of the nearby Three Jolly Wheelers public house.


Swan Eater

Location: E20 (Greater London) - Lea River, Olympic Park
Type: Cryptozoology
Date / Time: Late 2011
Further Comments: Users of the river had reported the swan population had been dropping, and in November 2011 one witness watched a large Canada goose being quickly pulled under the water. Opinions of what is snacking on the local bird life have ranged from the exotic (escaped or released alligator or python) to the reasonable (catfish or pike).


Bear Hunt

Location: E8 (Greater London) - Hackney marshes
Type: Cryptozoology
Date / Time: 27 December 1981, and May 2012
Further Comments: Four children reported seeing a bear in the marshland at Hackney in 1981- investigators discovered large paw prints in the snow but failed to find the animal. In 2012, student Helen Murray took two photographs of a large black haired creature in the area.


Croc

Location: E8 (Greater London) - River Lea
Type: Cryptozoology
Date / Time: 2005
Further Comments: After witnesses watched a Canada goose pulled under the water never to reappear, several people declared the attack must have been by a crocodile. However, experts said the attacker was much more likely to have been a large pike.


Green Serpent

Location: Easington (Yorkshire) - Off coast
Type: Cryptozoology
Date / Time: Late 1930s
Further Comments: This sea creature was snakelike, possessing a flat head. It appeared to gasp for air as it skimmed across the waves.


Large Wormlike Creature

Location: Eccles-on-Sea (Norfolk) - Coastline off Eccles
Type: Cryptozoology
Date / Time: 05 August 1936, evening
Further Comments: Observed by the Mayor, a MP and four other people, a creature twelve metres long moved like a worm on the surface of the water. One witness estimated the speed to be up to ninety miles per hour.


Pale Ape?

Location: Elveden (Suffolk) - A134
Type: Cryptozoology
Date / Time: 19 May 2011
Further Comments: A lorry driver reported seeing a hairy, light grey creature on all fours moving through grass around ninety metres away. The driver could see the creature had forward facing eyes, a long snout, and upright ears. The creature then stood on its hind legs and approached the driver, moving like an ape, before dropping once again to all fours and running off, peering over its shoulder as it left.


Fish Man

Location: Exeter (Devon) - Coastline
Type: Cryptozoology
Date / Time: November 1737
Further Comments: Fishermen on the shore caught a four foot tall humanoid, with duck-like feet and a tail protruding from its back. It tried to escape, but was killed when the fishermen beat it with sticks. Another fish-man was caught a few months later in the same area, though this one was described with more seal-like qualities.


Giant Bat

Location: Exeter (Devon) - Magdalen Road
Type: Cryptozoology
Date / Time: 25 May 2000
Further Comments: A witness walking down the road late at night stated he watched a giant bat, with a wingspan of 1.2 metres, swoop around the churchyard along this road.


Capybara

Location: Eyemouth (Borders) - A1, south of town
Type: Cryptozoology
Date / Time: July 2006 and June 2009
Further Comments: This large rodent, not native to the UK, was spotted in 2006, sitting in the middle of the A1. Another creature, or possibly the same one, was spotted three years later at Reston.


Vanishing Twitchers

Location: Eynhallow (Orkney) - Exact location unknown
Type: Cryptozoology
Date / Time: 14 July 1990
Further Comments: Two birdwatchers that vanished without trace on the island after arriving with 86 other people were thought by locals to have been taken by merfolk. An extensive search by the coastguard could find no trace of the missing people.


Morgawr Monster

Location: Falmouth (Cornwall) - Bay
Type: Cryptozoology
Date / Time: 1975 / 1976 onwards
Further Comments: This huge lizard was seen several times during 1976 - one witness managed to take a couple of photographs of the creature. Several years prior to this sighting, two fishermen reportedly caught a hairy monster about six metres in length, five kilometres off the coast. Reports of a strange creature are still coming in.


Hopping Creature

Location: Falmouth (Cornwall) - Between Swanpool and Maenporth
Type: Cryptozoology
Date / Time: 2007 - 2009
Further Comments: Several witnesses came forward over the first few months of 2009 claiming to have spotted a strange creature in bushes and trees in the area. Descriptions varied slightly between sightings, with one witness describing it as slightly larger than a dog, with a cat's face, walking on its hind legs. Another witness said it hopped away.


Guardian Beast

Location: Fern (Angus) - Castle of Vayne (ruins)
Type: Cryptozoology
Date / Time: Unknown
Further Comments: Protecting a wealth of gold and jewels, this monster tends to remain hidden unless threatened by treasure hunters. Nearby, in a rock comprised of sandstone, there is said to be the imprint of a kelpie's hoof, and the demon horse itself is said to live in a nearby pool.


Sea Beast

Location: Filey (Yorkshire) - Off Filey Brigg
Type: Cryptozoology
Date / Time: Sea monster seen in 1934
Further Comments: A coastguard reported a large sea monster with large glowing eyes off the coast here, its neck reaching 250cm from the water, its body a further 10 metres in length. A local legend tells how a dragon was killed by locals close to the location where the monster was seen.


Humped Creature

Location: Fintown (County Donegal) - Lough Muck
Type: Cryptozoology
Date / Time: 1885
Further Comments: A female witness reported seeing a strange creature with two humps in the lough.


Giraffe's Neck

Location: Firth of Clyde (Argyll and Bute) - Cumbrae Islands - waters off Great Cumbrae
Type: Cryptozoology
Date / Time: August 1911
Further Comments: A partly submerged creature with a neck not dissimilar to that of a giraffe, though it had the head of a camel, was seen in the waters by several fishermen.


Black Creature

Location: Firth of Forth (Fife) - Waters of
Type: Cryptozoology
Date / Time: 1873 / 1939
Further Comments: The earlier sighting here lasted around fifteen minutes, and the serpentine creature was seen by over one hundred people. The twentieth century sighting was of a totally different creature, this time brown in colour and possessing a horses head with large eyes.
