Strange Creatures from around the Isle

Flapping Serpent

Location: Clevedon (Somerset) - Off coast
Type: Cryptozoology
Date / Time: 28 April 1907
Further Comments: A man rowing towards Portishead claimed to have been attacked and pushed overboard by a long snake-like creature which jumped out of the water at him. He managed to climb back on board his boat and row onwards.

Loathsome Creature

Location: Clifden (County Galway) - Lough Fadda
Type: Cryptozoology
Date / Time: 1954 onwards
Further Comments: After spotting this strange water creature, one of the witnesses had nightmares for weeks after the event and refused to return alone to the lake. She said the creature was long and black, with smooth skin and a head like a shark.

Sea Creature with Horses Ears

Location: Cliftonville (Kent) - Off coast
Type: Cryptozoology
Date / Time: 1950
Further Comments: This sea monster was seen briefly off the coast.


Petticoat Loose.

Petticoat Loose

Location: Clogheen (County Tipperary) - Large pond in the Knockmealdown Mountains
Type: Cryptozoology
Date / Time: Unknown
Further Comments: The monster known as Petticoat Loose has a body like that of a horse, while the head takes the form of a woman. When it appears (which is rare), the creature asks, 'When will the day of judgement come?' before disappearing back under the water.

Each Uisge

Location: Cnoc-na-Beist (Outer Hebrides) - Loch a Mhuileinn
Type: Cryptozoology
Date / Time: Unknown
Further Comments: A local girl had a narrow escape after encountering a water horse which had taken the form of young man by the edge of the loch, only realising his true nature after spotting sand and mud in his hair. She fled home and told her brother, who killed it with his sword the following morning.

Multi-Winged Bird

Location: Coal Ashon (Derbyshire) - Exact area not known
Type: Cryptozoology
Date / Time: Nineteenth century?
Further Comments: More paranormal than a physical cryptid, a large white bird the size of a goose but with multiple wings appeared before a girl in the village. She circled the creature nine times and it vanished.

Black Hound

Location: Cobh (County Cork) - St Colman's Cathedral
Type: Cryptozoology
Date / Time: Unknown
Further Comments: This phantom dog is said to hide around the base of the building.

Red eyed Figure

Location: Cold Hesledon (Durham) - Lane leading away from the Pemberton Arms
Type: Cryptozoology
Date / Time: 10 October 2009
Further Comments: The CFZ website reported that a couple walking along a dark lane encountered a seven foot tall, black, man-shaped figure with glowing red eyes. The couple watched it for around fifteen seconds before it screamed and dropped from view.

Red Monkey

Location: Colebrook (Devon) - General area
Type: Cryptozoology
Date / Time: Unknown
Further Comments: For years, this creature was reported in the bushes of the area, attacking anyone who came too close.

Macphie's Captor

Location: Colonsay (Argyll and Bute) - Unknown cave along the coast
Type: Cryptozoology
Date / Time: Unknown
Further Comments: A mermaid kidnapped a man by the name of Macphie and held him in a cave along the island's shore. Macphie was given any item he wished for but remained unhappy until he managed to escape. The mermaid gave chase, but Macphie tossed his dog into the sea. Dog and mermaid fought until they both died from their injuries.

Something Large

Location: Combermere (Cheshire) - Combermere Lake
Type: Cryptozoology
Date / Time: Twentieth century?
Further Comments: Something tore a large hole in a pike net, and a diver searching for a drowned body encountered something that frightened him to such an extent that he said he would never return to the lake.

Crocodile

Location: Congleton (Cheshire) - Old quarry (now Astbury Mere Water Park)
Type: Cryptozoology
Date / Time: 1995
Further Comments: A lizard-like creature just under a metre in length was seen by several users of this quarry when it was converted to a water sports centre.

Horned Eel

Location: Connemara (County Galway) - Lough Nahioon (also spelt Nahooin)
Type: Cryptozoology
Date / Time: 22 February 1968
Further Comments: A family watched this creature, almost four metres long, swimming around the lake. It was described as dark and long without hair or eyes, and possessed two horns at the top of the head.

Giant Cow

Location: Corbridge (Northumberland) - Banks of the river
Type: Cryptozoology
Date / Time: 1660
Further Comments: A giant skeleton, around 6.5 metres in length, which was dug up on the banks of the river was believed (at the time) to belong to a rather large cow.

Dog Attack

Location: Cornaigbeg (aka Cornaig Beag), Tiree (Argyll and Bute) - Land around Cornaigbeg Farm
Type: Cryptozoology
Date / Time: Pre nineteenth century
Further Comments: A group of men with a dog were watching over cattle when they heard strange sounds, resembling a herd of sheep, although nothing could be seen. As the sounds passed, the dog chased the invisible entity. The dog later returned but died soon after, its hair scraped off with skin ripped and bloodied.

Brocshee

Location: Corofin (County Clare) - Rath Lake
Type: Cryptozoology
Date / Time: 1931
Further Comments: Several local farmers reported seeing a giant badger swimming in this lake, and the story made the front page of the local newspaper.

Long Neck with Series of Humps

Location: Covehithe (Suffolk) - Off coast
Type: Cryptozoology
Date / Time: July 1978
Further Comments: The witness described the creature as having a head like a seal, with a long neck and several humps. He also said that the event occurred very quickly...

Playing Creatures

Location: Croagh Patrick (County Mayo) - Lough na Corra
Type: Cryptozoology
Date / Time: 1911
Further Comments: Four people watched several strange black creatures playing and diving around the surface of the lake. They said the animals were larger than horses, which they could see standing on the shoreline.

Buggane

Location: Crosby (Isle of Man) - St Trinian's Church
Type: Cryptozoology
Date / Time: Unknown
Further Comments: This monster, an ogre-like entity, was stirred by the ringing of the bells of this church - it tore off the roof while trying to silence the peals. Another story says that the roof is missing because demons would throw it to the ground after each repair until either the locals eventually gave up trying to fix it, or local tailor Timothy Clucas tricked the Buggane into exploding its own head.

Creature from Curridge

Location: Curridge (Berkshire) - Passageway behind the Women's Institute Hall
Type: Cryptozoology
Date / Time: October 2012
Further Comments: A sixty centimetre tall, long necked creature was seen by Don Prater as he walked his dog. He described the creature as being dark or grey in colour, having a head like a deer, a neck similar to a swan and a bushy tail. The picture he sketched of the creature resembled an alpaca, although all local alpacas were accounted for.

Devil's Footprints

Location: Dawlish (Devon) - General area
Type: Cryptozoology
Date / Time: 8 / 9 February 1855
Further Comments: Thousands of cloven footprints covered Devon on the evening of 8 Feb 1855, resembling that of a donkey - apart from they ran in a straight line, covered roofs as well as roads, and stretched around one hundred miles across the county - Dawlish is just one of many places touched by the strange event.

Mermaids

Location: Deerness (Orkney) - Off coast
Type: Cryptozoology
Date / Time: Late nineteenth century
Further Comments: These women of the water were seen dozens of times during the last twenty years of the nineteenth century. One was said to have been shot, but the body was not recovered.

Piranha

Location: Doncaster (Yorkshire) - Martinwells Lake
Type: Cryptozoology
Date / Time: April 2019
Further Comments: The carcasses of two dead piranha were found on the shore of the lake causing concern to people in the area. The environment department of the local council said it was unlikely that the toothed fish had lived in the lake.

Gorilla?

Location: Dorchester (Dorset) - Unnamed Park
Type: Cryptozoology
Date / Time: March 2013
Further Comments: A teenager photographed a strange creature close to her home in parkland, before it ran up a tree and disappeared. The teenager said the creature resembled and moved like a small gorilla, although the nearby Monkey World attraction denied they were missing any of their animals.

Wildmen

Location: Dorchester (Dorset) - Yellowham Hill
Type: Cryptozoology
Date / Time: Unknown (but not recent)
Further Comments: This area was once thought to be the home of large hairy men, who abducted women.
