Nottinghamshire Ghosts, Folklore and Forteana

White Lady

Location: Annesley - Annesley Hall
Type: Haunting Manifestation
Date / Time: 1970, 25 September 2012 and 10 October 2012
Further Comments: Dying in childbirth, this mistress of a former owner still walks the walls. The ghost, or perhaps another, was seen in 1970 as it crossed the road outside the hall; the driver of a car drove straight through the figure. In October 2012, one team of ghost hunters recorded laughter in the stable when the area was empty - the area is reputed to be the location where a serving girl hanged herself - while another team in September spotted a black dog.


A phantom, grey woman.

Grey Lady

Location: Annesley - Parish church

Date / Time: Twentieth century
Further Comments: The misty grey form of a woman was spotted in the early hours of the morning by a worker returning home.

Wounded Soldier

Location: Arnold - Bestwood Lodge
Type: Haunting Manifestation
Date / Time: 1970s
Further Comments: The building, once a barracks, is haunted by the cries and groans of an injured soldier. A grey lady is also said to haunt the site.

Edna

Location: Arnold - Bonington Theatre
Type: Haunting Manifestation
Date / Time: Unknown
Further Comments: Once the theatre is locked up for the night, the sounds of footsteps can be heard within. Lights have also been switched on and cold spots reported. A rumour says that the building was erected on a Quaker burial site, and that the ghost, nicknamed Edna, is one of the former occupants.

Flee the Polt

Location: Arnold - Unknown residence along Furlong Street
Type: Poltergeist
Date / Time: Twentieth century
Further Comments: It is reported that a poltergeist outbreak in an unnamed residence along this road became so bad that the occupants moved away.

Loud Heart Beats

Location: Aspley - House along Melbourne Road
Type: Poltergeist
Date / Time: Early 1987
Further Comments: A family fled the building after being subjected to strange sounds, including deafening heart beats and mournful music played by an unplugged organ, and furniture which would move itself around. When a priest tried to perform an exorcism, his holy water threw itself on him. After the family left the property, they asked the council to rehouse them and were refused.

Trentham Drive

Location: Aspley - Trentham Drive
Type: ABC
Date / Time: 1984
Further Comments: A puma-sized cat, tabbyish in colour, was seen emerging from the garden of a bungalow before crossing the road. The creature made a loud noise before disappearing into another garden.


Phantom horsemen cross a river.

Roundheads

Location: Attenborough - Riverside, and church area
Type: Haunting Manifestation
Date / Time: Unknown
Further Comments: Readying themselves to cross the body of water, these troops still ride on their phantom steeds.

Vanishing Props

Location: Averham - Robin Hood Theatre
Type: Poltergeist
Date / Time: Late twentieth century
Further Comments: A touring group reported that their props vanished, and that furniture was moved around by an unseen hand. After they finished their production, the team turned all the building's lights off and locked up, only to find that all the lights had turned themselves back on as they reached the car park.

Moving Objects

Location: Balderton - House close to Bullpit Road
Type: Poltergeist
Date / Time: 1993
Further Comments: A family moved their young child to live with a grandparent after he refused to stay in the house. Objects moved on their own accord and strange noises reported. A psychic claimed to have removed three spirits from the property, although the family were determined to leave.

Jane

Location: Balderton - St Giles Church
Type: Haunting Manifestation
Date / Time: Unknown
Further Comments: Said to haunt the belfry, Jane may also be the grey ghost spotted outside the church late at night.

Grey Lady

Location: Barnby Moor - Ye Olde Bell Hotel
Type: Haunting Manifestation
Date / Time: 1980s
Further Comments: Seen in the ballroom, staircase and along corridors, this grey wraith is said to resemble a woman. A ghostly man, mistaken for being real, has been seen entering one of the rooms, though he can never be found, while some guests have reported mild poltergeist activity.

Red Eyed Hound

Location: Beckingham - Old Trent Road
Type: Shuck
Date / Time: Unknown
Further Comments: This large black dog with glowing eyes is said to have driven a local farmer mad after the man tried to block the creature's path. The farmer was also left almost completely paralysed. The hound is said to walk from the churchyard to nearby marshland before fading from view.

Cavalier

Location: Beeston - Crown Inn
Type: Haunting Manifestation

Further Comments: This inn is reputedly home to a phantom Cavalier, complete with cloak and plumed hat.

Man in Boiler Suit

Location: Beeston - Plessey Telecom factory
Type: Haunting Manifestation
Date / Time: 1971
Further Comments: People working the late shift were scared by a man wearing a cloth cap and boiler suit who would walk past them only to suddenly disappear.

Comforting Presence

Location: Beeston - Private house
Type: Poltergeist
Date / Time: 2013 and several years preceding
Further Comments: The resident of this property reported a comforting presence which would manifest during times of distress, and a poltergeist which would throw small items or hide them, sometimes for years, before they turned up again.

Roundhead

Location: Beeston - Private residence
Type: Haunting Manifestation
Date / Time: 1995-2005
Further Comments: On three separate occasions, children in this residence reported seeing an old fashioned soldier with a sword. When shown books containing military uniforms, the children have pointed to roundheads looking the most similar.

Charlie

Location: Besthorpe - Sand Lane
Type: Haunting Manifestation
Date / Time: Unknown
Further Comments: Charlie ran the mill that once stood along this lane before he committed suicide. His ghost is said to lurk at the spot the windmill stood.

Presence?

Location: Bilsthorpe - Bilsthorpe Colliery
Type: Haunting Manifestation
Date / Time: 1980s
Further Comments: After the steam driven No1 winder was replaced in 1979, with an electric one, several staff felt a presence in the basement at night which would follow or watch those present.


Robin Hood's merry man Will Scarlet.

Will Scarlet

Location: Blidworth - Churchyard
Type: Legend
Date / Time: Still present?
Further Comments: Will is said to be buried in the churchyard in a grave the shape of an arrow.

The Friar's Fight

Location: Blidworth - Fountain Dale
Type: Legend
Date / Time: Unknown
Further Comments: This location is thought to be the location where Robin Hood and Friar Tuck first met and fought.

Woman

Location: Blyth - Bridge along A634
Type: Haunting Manifestation
Date / Time: Summer 1970
Further Comments: A ghostly woman is said to haunt this bridge, her death involving a local gamekeeper, and was last encountered by a motorist who sensed her presence in his car.

Near Miss

Location: Bramcote - Hemlock Stone, Stapleford Hill
Type: Legend - Old Nick
Date / Time: Stone still present
Further Comments: The Devil tried to throw a ten metre tall rock at Lenton Priory from his cave at Castleton. He missed, and the stone landed on Stapleford Hill where it remains.

Girl in Blue

Location: Bramcote - Manor House
Type: Haunting Manifestation

Further Comments: This house is said to be haunted by a teenage girl wearing a blue dress.

Monk

Location: Bramcote - Sunken Church (church tower)
Type: Haunting Manifestation
Date / Time: 1978
Further Comments: This church is reported to be haunted by a dark monk-like figure. It may have last been seen by a policeman, though his sighting in 1978 was of a figure wearing a tricorn hat.
