Piper in Kilt

Location: Perth - Donaldgowerie House (no longer standing)
Type: Crisis Manifestation
Date / Time: Late nineteenth or early twentieth century?
Further Comments: The phantom piper once found in this building drifted through one witness and floated out an open window in the upper part of the building, several metres from the ground. Each time he appeared, a tragedy soon befell the family living in the house.

White Woman

Location: Perth - Huntingtower Castle
Type: Haunting Manifestation
Date / Time: Unknown
Further Comments: No one really has any idea who this phantom could be, though her appearance is said to warn against approaching bad luck and can bring about improved health and fortune. Some reports say she is green, rather than white.

Grey Lady

Location: Perth - Perth Theatre
Type: Haunting Manifestation
Date / Time: 29 September 2017
Further Comments: A photograph taken shows what appears to be a misty grey figure standing in a balcony while workmen carry out restoration work below. The theatre is reputedly home to a grey lady who wears period clothing, and to the smell of old tobacco smoke.


Caisteal Dubh, Pitlochry.

Plague Prevention

Location: Pitlochry - Caisteal Dubh - The Black Castle
Type: Legend
Date / Time: Unknown
Further Comments: A long distance messenger accidentally brought the plague to the owners of this castle - the villagers were terrified that the disease would quickly spread through the lands, so barricaded the castle doors from the outside and burnt the occupants alive.

Death Bogle

Location: Pitlochry - Crossroads in the town
Type: Haunting Manifestation
Date / Time: Unknown
Further Comments: This misty white entity lurks at a crossroads waiting for a passerby. As the unfortunate traveller approaches, the bogle tries to grab them - if successful, the passerby dies within a year.

Windproof Candle

Location: Pitlochry - Old White House (no longer standing)
Type: Unknown Ghost Type
Date / Time: Unknown
Further Comments: Once a well known haunted house in the area, reputedly built on the site of a graveyard, the ghost which haunted it ensured a candle in the building could not be extinguished no matter how much the occupants tried. It finally went out when one person recited a prayer.

Battlefield

Location: Pitlochry - Pass of Killiecrankie
Type: Environmental Manifestation
Date / Time: 27 July (reoccurring)
Further Comments: The bloody battleground between English Government and Jacobite Highlanders, the anniversary of the battle is marked by the ground turning blood red. Reports of soldiers in English and Scottish regalia, both lying dead and others fighting, have also been recorded. As if this was not enough, the area is also haunted by the drifting head of a woman murdered on the site during the seventeenth century, and the tall white spectre who tries to grab people passing along the roads; anyone the ghost touches dies within the year...

Handless Girl

Location: Rait - Rait Castle
Type: Haunting Manifestation
Date / Time: Unknown
Further Comments: During a bout of clan warfare, a daughter of the Comyns had her hands chopped off by her father who falsely believed she had betrayed him to their enemies (the MacIntoshes). She jumped from the castle battlements, rather than to bleed to death; her wraith is now seen drifting the castle ruins.

Water-Kelpie

Location: Rumbling Bridge - River
Type: Haunting Manifestation
Date / Time: Unknown
Further Comments: This water spirit is said to create noise and generate light to lure people into the river. As per a kelpie's normal behaviour, once someone took a step into the water, they were drowned.

Footsteps

Location: Scone - Scone Palace, South Passage
Type: Haunting Manifestation
Date / Time: Unknown
Further Comments: The ghost here is said to constantly walk up and down the passage, always at the same constant speed. One witness reported feeling something hit her arm three times while passing along the corridor.

Gold

Location: Southwick - Ruins of a round tower
Type: Legend
Date / Time: Unknown
Further Comments: Buried somewhere in this area is enough gold, wrapped in a bull hide, to provide wealth to the whole of Scotland.

Soldier

Location: Tulliebole - Trooper's Dubb (aka Trooper's Pool)
Type: Haunting Manifestation
Date / Time: Eighteenth century?
Further Comments: A soldier engaged in a drinking contest on by the side of the pool died (presumably due to alcohol poisoning) and was buried close by. The soldier was said to have been seen sitting in the same spot post-mortem, threatening to throw witnesses into the pool, and fearful locals would take longer routes home after dark to avoid passing too close to the site.

Three Redcoats

Location: Weem - Castle Menzies
Type: Haunting Manifestation
Date / Time: Twenty-first century
Further Comments: Three British Redcoats who attacked the chief's daughter were tortured and killed in one of the vaulted rooms on the ground floor, the location their ghosts are reputed to lurk. An older woman haunts the Pink Room, with the smell of lavender signifying her presence. A young boy is felt or seen on the stairs and throughout the top floors of the castle. Finally, the top floor home to a Government Officer killed by a Highlander after the Battle of Killiecrankie.
