Suicide

Location: WC2 - Aldine House, Maiden Street
Type: Haunting Manifestation
Date / Time: 1970s
Further Comments: The owners of the building reported hearing strange banging's and scrapings from the floor above them - the sounds were attributed to the ghost of a man who had committed suicide there a few years previous.


 
Displaced Actress

Location: WC2 - Aldwych Underground Station (no longer operational)
Type: Haunting Manifestation
Date / Time: Unknown
Further Comments: Built where the Royal Strand Theatre once stood, it is thought the female ghost seen standing on the tracks migrated from the original building to the station shortly after it became operational. She is normally reported by cleaning staff working the night shift.


 
Woman

Location: WC2 - Bow Street Magistrates' Court (no longer operating as a court)
Type: Haunting Manifestation
Date / Time: 1970s onwards?
Further Comments: This building was said to be haunted by a woman who would suddenly vanish when seen.


 
The Man in a Tricorn Hat

Location: WC2 - British Optical Association Museum, Craven Street
Type: Haunting Manifestation
Date / Time: 13 March 2006
Further Comments: While engaging in redecoration of the building, one of the decorators encountered a crouching figure of an old man. Another ghostly figure was spotted a couple of days later, this time of a middle aged man wearing a dark blue coat with a tricorn hat, who asked the witness ‘Where's Mary? I can't find Mary.'


 
Fruity

Location: WC2 - Cheshire Cheese public house, Little Essex Street
Type: Poltergeist
Date / Time: Unknown
Further Comments: The polt at work in this pub is reputed to move the fruit machine.


 
Tall, Dark Stranger

Location: WC2 - Cleopatra's Needle, Embankment
Type: Haunting Manifestation
Date / Time: Twentieth century
Further Comments: A ghost of a suicide, this figure leaps over the edge of the embankment wall, but there is never a following splash. There are also reports of phantom laughing coming from the area.


 
Trench Trooper

Location: WC2 - Coliseum, St Martin's Lane
Type: Post-Mortem Manifestation
Date / Time: 03 October 1918
Further Comments: A small group of friends out for an evening's entertainment observed a man they knew walking down an aisle of the theatre, but he quickly disappeared from view. They later discovered that he had been killed in trench warfare around the time they saw him. He has been seen in the same area periodically since.


 
Kids

Location: WC2 - Courtts Bank
Type: Haunting Manifestation
Date / Time: 25 December (reoccurring)
Further Comments: Once a Mecca for toy sellers and buyers, the sounds of joyous children can be heard briefly once a year. Another entity, claiming to be an Elizabethan nobleman, was exorcised during the early 1990s - he was thought to be either the Earl of Essex (executed in 1601) or Thomas Howard, Duke of Norfolk.


 
Legless Woman

Location: WC2 - Covent Garden Piazza
Type: Unknown Ghost Type
Date / Time: 31 December 1989
Further Comments: A photograph taken by Mr Webb of his young daughter shows a woman dressed in black floating legless in the background. While it is possible that the woman's legs are concealed behind a post, the angle at which she leans does create doubt that the lady is corporeal.


 
Usherette

Location: WC2 - Lyric Theatre, Shaftesbury Avenue
Type: Haunting Manifestation
Date / Time: 1972
Further Comments: This figure, seen walking along the aisles of the theatre, was killed by a bomb dropped by a zeppelin in World War 1.


 
Manager in Brown Suit

Location: WC2 - Metropolitan Music Hall, Edgware Road (no longer standing)
Type: Haunting Manifestation
Date / Time: Unknown
Further Comments: Killed in the trenches during the First World War, the manager came back to his beloved theatre, and watched the first performances of new shows to ensure they were up to scratch.


 
Figure Walking

Location: WC2 - National Gallery, gallery 16
Type: Haunting Manifestation
Date / Time: 25 September 1999
Further Comments: Picked up by CCTV cameras, a dark figure has been observed walking around the gallery at night. Gallery 42 is also said to be haunted; it is believed that a plague pit exists underneath.


 
Anna Pavlova

Location: WC2 - Palace Theatre, Cambridge Circus
Type: Haunting Manifestation
Date / Time: Unknown
Further Comments: The debate to whether the ghostly ballerina to be found here is really Pavlova is still in motion. The building's other entity, Ivor Novello, died in 1951 but still watches performances from the back of the dress circle. Two seats are left unfilled during performances for the ghosts, although during the Harry Potter and the Cursed Child run, the seats were sold as normal.


 
Fading Lady

Location: WC2 - Peacock Theatre (was Royalty Theatre), Dean Street
Type: Haunting Manifestation
Date / Time: Lady circa 1934, Dolphin from 1980s onwards?
Further Comments: A woman clothed in an outfit dating from the Queen Anne period is reported to descend the staircase here, slowly fading before she reaches the bottom. A short scream is said to signify her complete disappearance. The female ghost has not been seen as of late, and appears to have been replaced by the sound of a phantom dolphin which, during life, was kept in a small tank under the stage in the 1930s).


 
Young Girl

Location: WC2 - Savoy Hotel
Type: Haunting Manifestation
Date / Time: Unknown
Further Comments: A phantom girl is reputed to haunt the fifth floor of the hotel. The same entity is also connected to a mysterious lift which does not really exist.


 
Horatio Nelson

Location: WC2 - Somerset House, Strand
Type: Haunting Manifestation
Date / Time: Nelson in Spring (reoccurring), woman in 1972
Further Comments: Seen striding towards his former office, Nelson always vanishes before he can be approached. Another ghost, that of a wispy female, has been seen a couple of times, drifting down a corridor in the building.


 
Parson Ford

Location: WC2 - The Hummums, Covent Garden (was next door to the New Hummums which is now Tuttons Restaurant)
Type: Post-Mortem Manifestation
Date / Time: Nineteenth century?
Further Comments: A manservant at these former Turkish baths reported seeing a man he knew on the cellar stairs - it later transpired that the figure had died several days previously.


 
Unknown Woman

Location: WC2 - Vaudeville Theatre
Type: Haunting Manifestation
Date / Time: 2000s
Further Comments: Box office staff regularly smell a heavy herb-like perfume around them and backstage staff report noises and presences. A workman reported briefly seeing the feet of a woman and the bottom of a cloak pass him by (the rest of the person was obscured) after the building was closed for the night.


 
Headless Man

Location: WC2 - Waterloo Bridge, Embankment
Type: Post-Mortem Manifestation
Date / Time: Twentieth century
Further Comments: The discovery of human remains near the bridge in the mid twentieth century resulted in a ghostly apparition appearing for a few weeks after the incident. Earlier in the twentieth century, a criminal spotted a well-dressed young man on the bridge. As the criminal tried to grab the man, the young potential victim vanished.


 
Oliver Cromwell

Location: WC2 - Wig and Pen Club, The Strand
Type: Haunting Manifestation
Date / Time: Unknown
Further Comments: Cromwell is said to return to the bar in search of his head, which was once displayed on a spike nearby. Another ghost, that of a lawyer who committed suicide in the 1800's, has also been spotted in the building.


 
Climbing Footsteps

Location: WC2A - Bell Yard
Type: Haunting Manifestation
Date / Time: 2000s
Further Comments: Mentioned in Dickens's Bleak House, this building is reputedly haunted by phantom footsteps that move around on the staircase heading towards the legal chambers.


 
Lord Mohun

Location: WC2E - James' Street
Type: Crisis Manifestation
Date / Time: 1642
Further Comments: Lord Mohun appeared to a lady walking along this street at the moment he was killed in a dual at Chelsea Fields.
