Further Comments: Little is known about the ghost which made a sudden appearance at the old mill here in the nineteenth century.

Victorian in Crinoline

Location: Belfast - Old Belfast Crown Court

Further Comments: It was reported that RUC officers on night duty watched a Victorian lady wearing Crinoline ascend the back staircase and continue along the corridor, before disappearing through the end wall.

Fading Man

Location: Belfast - Private house along Windsor Avenue
Type: Haunting Manifestation
Date / Time: Early 1970s
Further Comments: Unable to sleep one night, this witness turned over in bed to see a semi-transparent young man smiling down at her. He had very short hair, wore a collarless shirt and had braces on his trousers. The witness said there was a warm and friendly atmosphere in the room. The ghostly figure slowly faded away.

Victorian Lady

Location: Belfast - Private house, Fromme Street (since demolished)

Further Comments: Gerald J Tate wrote that his brother awoke to find a young Victorian woman in his bedroom. She wore a blue dress and had around her neck a locket holding a shiny stone. The brother fled the house and ran to his parents who lived just around the corner. A few years later Gerald was talking to a co-worker when his discovered the man's uncle had lived in the same house and had experienced some violent poltergeist-like effects, including almost being pushed down the stairs by an unseen force.

Large Figure

Location: Belfast - Private residence, Twaddell Avenue

Further Comments: A large black figure with a bald head was spotted standing by a bed. The figure held his hands down his sides and appeared angry. Some people on the site felt they were being watched after dark, while the back door of the premises would close by itself.

Further Comments: It was said that even one calm days a strange wind would pass along this street, blowing items over and along with ease.


Location: Belfast - Smithfield area

Further Comments: Biddy is said to haunt the area where she drank herself to death after inheriting 250 pounds. Her ghost is said to wander the area. In addition, Smithfield was also the location of J. J. Herdman's Mill, where in 1900 an accident killed 13 women and girls. Their ghosts were reported for many years after the tragedy.

John Savage

Location: Belfast - The Brickyard

Further Comments: Nineteenth century landlord John Savage slit his own throat after suffering what is thought to be a state of depression. His ghost was said to haunt the brickyard.

Helena Blunden

Location: Belfast - The Irish Linen Mill (currently a print shop)
Type: Haunting Manifestation
Date / Time: 1912 onwards?
Further Comments: A known hoax. Regardless, the story goes that Helena fell on the basement stairs, and was dead before she hit the bottom step. Since then, footsteps have been reported in her former workplace, as have electrical disturbances (such as lights and radios being turned on).

Figure in Carriage

Further Comments: Local press published a photograph of a spooky looking figure sitting in a train carriage, although the 'ghost' is most likely accidently created using a slow shutter speed.

Woman Drinking Coffee

Location: Belfast - Vicarage Street

Further Comments: This female ghost walks down the street carrying a cup of coffee in one hand and a cigarette in her other.

John Herdman

Location: Belfast - Waterworks
Type: Haunting Manifestation

Further Comments: Shot in 1862, John Herdman is said to haunt the area of the Waterworks.

Shadowy Figures

Location: Belfast - York Road Railway Station
Type: Haunting Manifestation

Further Comments: A strange person has been reported sitting in the locked canteen at night. This may be the same figure which has been glimpsed in the running sheds - during a bungled wages snatch a man was either shot or beaten and subsequently died from his injuries. Night staff have also reported hearing disembodied footsteps in the area.


Location: Carrickfergus - Carrickfergus Castle

Further Comments: Affectionately known as Buttoncap, named after the large button worn on his headdress, this spooky soldier haunts a small area near an old well. Another version of the story says he is actually in the well. The soldier's life ended when he was executed after being falsely accused of sleeping with his commanding officer's wife.


Location: Carrickfergus - Dobbin's Inn Hotel

Further Comments: Elizabeth, wife of former owner Hugh Dobbins, had an affair with an soldier stationed at the castle. When Hugh discovered the relationship, he murdered the couple. Elizabeth, also known as Maud, now contents herself by stroking people's faces as they sleep or by making fleeting appearances in the reception area.


Location: Cushendall - Ossian's Grave

Further Comments: As this witness asked his partner to marry him, both heard an almighty scream which lasted several seconds - after the sound subsided, their ears rang for hours afterward. A legend says that Ossian lies resting in the grave, rather than dead, awaiting the moment he can arise.

William Tannahill

Location: Dunmurry - Clothing Mill

Further Comments: For a three week period after William the night watchman died, his footsteps could be heard patrolling the factory and leaving his former cottage. When a new evening guard was appointed, the footsteps ceased.

Finn's Bridge

Location: Giant's Causeway - Rock formation
Type: Legend
Date / Time: Rock formation still present
Further Comments: Finn McCool, a hero of Ireland, created this rocky causeway to enable a Scottish giant to cross the sea so they could fight. MacCool won the duel after dressing as a baby; the Scottish giant fled home, tearing up the bridge to prevent the Irish giant from following. Also, the ghost of a boy who drowned here in 1910 is still seen playing on the rocks - he wears a soaking wet sailor's suit and vanishes if spoken to.


Location: Glenarm - Glenarm Castle

Further Comments: A woman living at the castle had every room in the castle exorcised, driving the phantom which haunted the building into the attic where it could be heard moaning and stomping. It is unclear whether is occurred before or after a ghostly woman in brown wearing a mob cap was seen. A footman in old garb has also been seen in the garden.

Triangular-Headed Creature

Location: Glenavy - Aghnadarragh Road

Further Comments: While walking towards the village, one witness spotted a sixty centimetre tall demonic looking creature with a triangular shaped head. When the creature spotted the witness it shuffled over a fence and disappeared from view. UFOs and strange sounds are also reported to have occurred along the same stretch.

Strange Noises

Location: Islandmagee - Old house constructed on site of disused graveyard

Further Comments: Sounds like carts running over cobblestones were reported here, while one person reported being pushed by an unseen presence.

Strange Man

Location: Islandmagee - Old road leading to post office
Type: Post-Mortem Manifestation
Date / Time: Circa 1895
Further Comments: One woman reported being followed by a strange man as she walked her dog to the post office. She passed several friends during the journey, but none could see the fellow a short distance behind her. Three weeks later it was discovered that her friend's brother had died at sea around the time of the sighting.

Drifting Nun

Location: Lambeg - Area outside the graveyard

Further Comments: Moving from the former site of Lambeg house, this shade vanishes as she reaches the gate of the local churchyard.


Location: Lisburn - Army Base, Packard Road (no longer standing)
Type: Haunting Manifestation
Date / Time: 1996 - 2000
Further Comments: It was reported that this base was haunted by disembodied footsteps and moaning. Items would also be found moved or thrown around.


Location: Lisburn - M1, heading towards Belfast
Type: Haunting Manifestation
Date / Time: Circa 1969
Further Comments: A young woman with long dark hair, wearing a tartan coat and carrying a suitcase, was spotted walking in the centre of the motorway by a passenger in a car. As the car drove past, the passenger turned to look at the figure from out the back window, but she had vanished. The witness later learned that the woman had been seen by others, and was thought to be a nurse who was knocked over and killed along the road.
