Car Lights

Location: Portree - Road between Portree and Sligachan

Further Comments: Lights of an incoming car has been reported along this road, although they suddenly vanish without trace. Some say the lights belong to a car which fell from the ferry (although there may be two different phantom cars).

Further Comments: A water monster has been reported inhabiting the loch.

Kelpie Bridle

Location: Rannoch - Lochanna Cuile (location may have changed identity), near or on Rannoch Moor
Type: Fairy
Date / Time: Unknown
Further Comments: A man travelling from Pitlochry to Nether Lochaber rested in this area and found a horse's bridle made of pure silver which burnt hot to the touch. A wise woman told the man the bridle belonged to a Kelpie and instructed him to hang the object in his home on a crook of rowan. The man did as instructed and was blessed with luck for the rest of his life.


Location: Rinns of Islay - Small island off Rinns of Islay
Type: Cryptozoology
Date / Time: Nineteenth century
Further Comments: There are several entities said to haunt this small island, including a mermaid, the sound of rattling chains, and water horses. A woman supervising cattle on the island was attacked by something tall and hairy, with no skin upon its face. She managed to survive by throwing boiling water over the entity and creating a magic circle, remaining inside it.

Tall Woman

Location: River Conan - By the waters
Type: Haunting Manifestation
Date / Time: Early to mid nineteenth century?
Further Comments: The water was haunted by a tall woman dressed in green with a scowling face. The figure would either point at travellers, filling them with dread, or grab them and pull the doomed person into the river water to die.

Man in Green

Location: River Glass - General location
Type: Haunting Manifestation
Date / Time: Unknown
Further Comments: This phantom green man was said to have caused considerable upset to the neighbourhood.


Location: River Oykel (aka Oikel) - Waters of the river
Type: Haunting Manifestation
Date / Time: Unknown
Further Comments: Vaiegh was the name given to the female spirit which haunted this river, which was said to scream when people were nearby. One horse driver was said to have protected himself by throwing stones into the river as he crossed.

Humped Creature

Location: Scalpay Island - Waters off the island
Type: Cryptozoology
Date / Time: Late nineteenth century
Further Comments: Four witnesses in a yacht reported seeing two humped creatures swimming off the coast of the island. One witness estimated the length of the serpents to be at least forty feet (twelve metres).

Shipwrecked Sailor

Location: Sheigra - Beach
Type: Post-Mortem Manifestation
Date / Time: Unknown
Further Comments: For several nights after his drowning, this ghostly sailor made his presence known to a local man - they finally had a conversation (the contents of which were never revealed) and the shade was never seen again.

1934 Austin

Location: Sligachan - A850 road from the town, leading to Portree
Type: Haunting Manifestation
Date / Time: Twentieth century
Further Comments: Racing around the roads, witnesses pull over to let this car overtake them as it approached rapidly from behind - but it always vanishes before reaching them.

Fairy Flag

Location: Sligachan, Isle of Skye - Dunvegan Castle
Type: Fairy
Date / Time: Unknown
Further Comments: The Flag of the MacLeod's was given to them by a fairy that changed herself into a mortal and married into the family - it can only be used three times, but each time it is waved, it grants the MacLeods victory over a foe. Used twice before (1490 & 1580), the flag remained true to the fairy's words. The Fairy Bridge near the castle is considered inherently evil, and upsets animals.

Leaving Fairies

Location: Snizort, Isle of Skye - Dun Borve
Type: Fairy
Date / Time: Unknown
Further Comments: The locals once played a trick on the fairies here - they promptly moved away in protest.

Hovering Ball

Location: Spean Bridge - A82 between Spean Bridge and Torlundy
Type: Other
Date / Time: 05 April 2016, 22:15h
Further Comments: A passenger of a car noticed a round light hovering a foot above the surface of the road; it vanished into a hedge. The driver was not aware of the light.

Green Lady

Location: St Catherine's - Loch Fyne Hotel
Type: Haunting Manifestation
Date / Time: Unknown
Further Comments: A barmaid dropped a tray of drinks and ran screaming from the drinks store after hearing heavy breathing down her neck. The room is said to be the location that a former female employee hanged herself while wearing a green dress, and now her emerald form drifts around the hotel creating mischief.

Head Thrower

Location: Staffin - Road in the area, exact location not known
Type: Unknown Ghost Type
Date / Time: Unknown
Further Comments: This macabre, phantasmic entity would attack and kill unwary travellers by pulling off its own head and throwing it at them!

The Drowning

Location: Strath, Isle of Skye - Waters of the Loch
Type: Legend
Date / Time: Circa Sixth century
Further Comments: This loch was the home of an evil spirit that drowned anyone who entered it. The entity was finally dispatched by Saint Columba.

Devil's Bath

Location: Strathpeffer - Hot springs in the area
Type: Legend - Old Nick
Date / Time: Still present
Further Comments: The hot springs found in the region are said to be used by the Devil to wash both himself and his dirty linen.

Ninety Foot Long Creature

Location: Summer Isles - Loch Broom
Type: Cryptozoology
Date / Time: 1906
Further Comments: Two excise officers reportedly fired at a ninety foot (thirty metre) long monster as it charged towards them at some sixty miles per hour, resulting in the creature diving. Local fishermen also spotted the monster, and it was also claimed that a 100 tonne yacht was lifted out of the water when it encountered the beast.

Leg Breaking

Location: Swordle - St Columba's Cave

Further Comments: The site where Saint Columba baptised two criminals became a site of pilgrimage where travellers left offerings. One man who stole some of the gifts fell from his horse and broke his leg.

Corpse Candles

Location: Taagan - Holly Pool
Type: Crisis Manifestation
Date / Time: Early twentieth century
Further Comments: Two lights were once often seen dancing around the surface of the pool, until two children tragically drowned in its waters.

Naked Mermaid?

Location: Thurso - Sandside Bay
Type: Cryptozoology
Date / Time: 1798
Further Comments: William Munro, a schoolmaster from Thurso, watched a naked woman combing her hair on a rock in the bay. After a few minutes she dived under the water and vanished.

Dwarven Miners

Location: Tongue - Ben Loyal
Type: Fairy
Date / Time: Unknown
Further Comments: Working deep beneath the mountain, the dwarfs would create items for mortals only if the price were right.

Colann gun Cheann

Location: Trottenish - General area
Type: Haunting Manifestation
Date / Time: Unknown
Further Comments: This sinister, decapitated ghost roamed the area looking for the living - when it encountered a person, it would throw its head at them before trying to kill the unfortunate soul.

MacLeods' Heads

Location: Trotternish - Loch of Heads
Type: Legend
Date / Time: Unknown
Further Comments: A skirmish between the MacLeods and the MacDonalds led to the MacLeods defeat - the victors decapitated all the bodies and rolled the heads down a hill to the loch below. As the heads rolled, they could be heard chanting 'We almost won today!', hence the name of the area.

Stoned Man

Location: Trotternish, Isle of Skye - Old Man of Storr
Type: Legend
Date / Time: Still present
Further Comments: Turned to stone by a couple of antisocial ogres, the old man of Storr has remained a monolith for hundreds of years, and no doubt will forevermore.
