Screaming

Further Comments: A total of six entities are reported to haunt these ruins; the screams of a starving prisoner (walled up in the tower), a weeping nun, three drunkards, and the cries of a nursemaid holding a dead child (that she accidentally dropped from the battlements).

Body on the Back

Location: Durness - Bay in the area

Date / Time: Mid nineteenth century
Further Comments: Two men, one of whom was considered to have 'second sight', were walking across the bay when the man with the gift complained of feeling like a dead body was being carried across his back. A few days later a body washed up in the bay, which was ultimately picked up and carried to church by the man with the gift.

Music

Location: Durness - Fraisgell's Cave - Loch Eribol

Further Comments: Created by fairies, this music emerges from the cave and floats across the waters of Loch Eribol.

Old Man

Location: Durness - Rectory
Type: Unknown Ghost Type
Date / Time: Unknown
Further Comments: The preacher who lived here was too scared to answer the phantom knocking at the door, as he knew whatever was there would bring bad luck. He tricked another local holy man into coming to the rectory and answering the door for him; the unlucky visitor later died of shock.

Donald

Location: Durness - Smoo Caves
Type: Legend
Date / Time: Unknown
Further Comments: After selling his soul to the Devil, Donald gained access to powerful magics and cast no shadow in the midday sun. He turned on his dark master in the caverns here, the Devil losing the fight and creating the large holes in the roof of the cave as he fled the wizard.

Sailor

Location: Durness - Unknown house and beach
Type: Post-Mortem Manifestation

Further Comments: A man who would collect furniture washed up on the beach from shipwrecks would be awoken by a ghostly sailor who threw items around the house. One night the man spoke to the ghost, which pointed towards the door. The man followed the ghost out the door and down to the beach. When the sea became visible, the ghost vanished and never returned.

Fairy Abduction

Location: Evanton - Balconie House
Type: Fairy

Further Comments: The lady of the house was taken away by a strange man dressed in green, who appeared from nowhere. A few years later a witness reported seeing her chained at the bottom of a local cavern, though no one was able to climb down and release her. The house also may be haunted - one story told was of a group of fishermen who fled the house one night after encountering a ghost.

Polish Gentleman

Location: Fearn - Area between Fearn and Nigg, exact location not known

Further Comments: After he died, the noble from Poland left a great deal of money to friends and relatives, but the hidden funds could not be found. Though his shade was seen shortly after death, no one has had to courage to face the ghost and ask where his treasure is concealed.

Angry Wife

Location: Fearn - Cottage close to the churchyard

Further Comments: Within a few hours of burying his wife, a farmer was proposing to a woman who lived close to the churchyard. The farmer's flirtations were cut short when he spotted his dead wife watching him through a window. He sickened and died a couple of weeks later.

Crawling Woman

Location: Fort Augustus - Ardachie Lodge (no longer standing)

Date / Time: 1950s
Further Comments: This ghost could be heard knocking on the walls at night, and when it materialised, took the form of a grey haired lady crawling around the room on all fours. The family which had moved in left after twelve days, and the building demolished ten years later.

Abernethy

Location: Fort George - The Fort George buildings

Further Comments: The entity nicknamed 'Abernethy' by the soldiers haunts the camp jail and is reported to be quite malevolent. In the medical centre, where a soldier once hanged himself, the sounds of a creaking rope have been heard, while in the guardroom a soldier reported seeing a phantom dressed in a late nineteenth century army uniform leaning over him.

Tailless Tiger

Location: Fort William - Glen Nevis

Further Comments: Two witnesses running in the area observed a three metre long cat drinking from the river. One of the witnesses said the creature looked like a tailless tiger with white eyes but no pupils. The creature ran off into a nearby field when it spotted the runners. A few days later local papers reported the deaths of several local sheep in the same field where the creature had run. 

Edith

Location: Fort William - West Highland Museum

Further Comments: Edith MacGregor, once a curator, has been heard typing away in one of the rooms upstairs though she died back in the sixties. No typewriters can be found in the building; all have been replaced by PCs.

General Mischief

Location: Foyers - Boleskin (or Boleskine) House, destroyed by arson attacks in 2019
Type: Haunting Manifestation
Date / Time: Mid / late twentieth century
Further Comments: One time home of Aleister Crowley, his immoral influence is said to continue to lurk here, taking the form of flashing lights, shattering windows and a moving chair. It was also reported that a decapitated head could be heard rolling down a set of stairs.

Water Cow

Location: Gairloch - Loch na Beiste
Type: Cryptozoology

Further Comments: In an effort to kill the water cow, said to be the size of an upturned boat, the landowner tried to empty the loch. When this failed, he poured quicklime into the water to poison the creature.

Margot

Location: Garve - Former Victorian hunting lodge

Date / Time: June / July 1981
Further Comments: A worker at this former hotel reported that screaming and banging could be heard at night. The ghost of Margot was blamed, a scullery maid who was said to have perished in a fire during the nineteenth century.

Former Waitress

Location: Garve - Hotel, exact details unknown

Further Comments: This former worker killed herself after being victimised by her boss. For many years after the event, bells would ring without reason throughout the building.

Climber

Location: Glen Coe - Aonach Eagach

Further Comments: Mid afternoon on a clear day, a climber descending the Clachaig Gully path spotted and heard a figure in yellow kit climb over a slight brow just ahead of him. When the climber reached the point, the figure had vanished.

Old Maid

Location: Glen Duror - Achnadarroch House

Further Comments: This old woman, dressed in either grey, green or black, is regarded as a protector of the estate. The spook is said to move at a speed unbefitting for such an old lady.

Fachan

Location: Glen Etive - General area
Type: Cryptozoology

Further Comments: This mythical creature has set up home in Etive, though it is said to travel for miles around the area of the Glen. It is described as possessing only one leg, a single hand which protrudes from the middle of its chest, and a solitary eye in the centre of the head.

Goblin

Location: Glen Mor - Glen Gloy

Further Comments: This pesky little fellow his said to be half as high as the average person, and twice as vindictive to any trespassers caught on 'his' land.

Battle

Location: Glen Shiel - General area

Further Comments: A group of men have reportedly been observed fighting with sword and gun.

Sharp Turner

Location: Glendale, Isle of Skye - Skies in the area
Type: UFO
Date / Time: 31 December 1998
Further Comments: Two men walking dogs along the shore at dusk spotted a bright star-like light at high altitude. One witness said that he would have passed it off as a military jet, but it made an instant 140 degree turn before disappearing into clouds.

Bright Ball

Location: Glendale, Isle of Skye - Exact location not known
Type: UFO
Date / Time: Winter mid 1990s
Further Comments: Three men watched a bright glowing ball, between four to five feet in diameter pass a few feet over a house and descend into a field where it disappeared in a small flash of light. The following day they went to check where the ball had vanished but found nothing. One witness said the ball had a white centre but glowed different colours at the edges.

Drowned John

Location: Glenelg - John MacInnes' Loch (six miles out of village)
Type: Cryptozoology

Further Comments: Struggling to maintain his farm, John MacInnes was told by a strange being that help would be provided, but certain conditions would have to be followed. John agreed, and a short time later found a stray horse which he used to plough his land. He would bless the creature every evening and it continued to work, but unfortunately on one occasion forgot. The horse picked John up and dashed into the loch, where man and beast vanished forever.
