Ghostly Monk

Further Comments: Human inhabitants at the pub have learnt to share the building with the spirit of this former monk.

Bleeding

Location: Staunton - The Long Stone
Type: Legend
Date / Time: Still present
Further Comments: If this stone is pricked with a pin at midnight, it is said to bleed. If bored, it is sometimes seen moving across nearby countryside!

Shadows in Doorways

Location: Stoke Gifford - Private residence, Mead Road
Type: Haunting Manifestation
Date / Time: Early 1990s onwards
Further Comments: A former resident experienced the constant feeling of being watched in the lounge and spotting black shadows in doorways. Many years after moving out, the witness passed the building and spotted a woman approaching. The witness looked down for a second, during which time the figure vanished.

Horseman

Location: Stow on the Wold - A429 Fosse Way, heading towards Warwick
Type: Haunting Manifestation
Date / Time: September or October 2006, early evening
Further Comments: A driver reported glancing at her rear view mirror and seeing a horseman wearing a long black cape leap out into the road. The horseman was so close, the driver thought the rider would hit the car, but he vanished.

Victorian Gentleman

Location: Stow on the Wold - Foss Way heading towards Stow, highest point on the road
Type: Haunting Manifestation
Date / Time: 07 December 2004
Further Comments: Dressed in Victorian clothing and wearing an old top hat, this man was seen twice in one day by a couple of friends out driving. The first time they encountered him, they narrowly avoided hitting the 'man'; while realising that there was something strange about him, they were not too sure what, until they drove back the same way a few hours later and glimpsed the figure again - this time he vanished in front of them.


Chapel Street, Stow on the Wold.

Pools of Water

Location: Stow on the Wold - House along Chapel Street
Type: Poltergeist
Date / Time: 1963-1964
Further Comments: This pesky entity would create large pools of water throughout the house, with plumbers unable to find any physical cause. It also took to writing on the wall and tearing off the wallpaper. A voice was heard to say that the entity was a builder who had died twenty years previous.


King's Arms hotel, Stow on the Wold.

Victorian Woman

Location: Stow on the Wold - King's Arms hotel
Type: Haunting Manifestation
Date / Time: 2000s?
Further Comments: This old hotel is said to be haunted by a woman in Victorian clothing who looks quite real. Wailing and crying has also been reported from within the property.


The Old Stocks Hotel, Stow on the Wold.

Pianist

Location: Stow on the Wold - Old Stocks Hotel
Type: Haunting Manifestation
Date / Time: Twentieth century
Further Comments: The sounds of the piano can sometimes be heard in the building, though the instrument is not present. The ghost of an aged vicar is also reported here.

Victorian Children

Location: Stow on the Wold - Royalist Hotel
Type: Haunting Manifestation
Date / Time: Late twentieth / early twenty-first century
Further Comments: Several ghosts are reported to haunt this building. A young man has been seen to vanish near the reception area, two children in Victorian clothing may be responsible for the strange tapping sounds, a pretty woman in a long dress and a cavalier both haunt the staircase, and a knight in black armour has also been observed on site.


The White Hart pub, Stow on the Wold.

George

Location: Stow on the Wold - White Hart public house
Type: Haunting Manifestation
Date / Time: 1990s
Further Comments: This pub ghost is said to manifest as a shaft of white light, although occasionally takes a human form. When the pub was redecorated in the 1990s, George was blamed for smashing light bulbs and switching on electrical items.

Pink Frog Fall

Location: Stroud - General area
Type: Other
Date / Time: 1987
Further Comments: Several people reported a heavy rain fall that also brought down dozens of tiny pink frogs.

Old Woman

Location: Stroud - Jarolen House
Type: Haunting Manifestation
Date / Time: Twentieth century
Further Comments: This lady, dressed in a long sweeping grey dress and white apron is thought to be a nineteenth century maid who found it difficult to leave her former employer.

Outline of Coach

Location: Stroud - Road running alongside Rodborough Common, and apartments built near Rodborough Manor
Type: Haunting Manifestation
Date / Time: 1970s, September 2013
Further Comments: A couple out walking in the 1970s watched in amazement as the ghostly outline of a horseless coach passed them. In 2013, a group of friends watched as an old fashioned car silently moved by. No driver could be seen and as they tried to follow, it vanished. Other witnesses have seen the phantom, and others have reported headless horsemen or of hearing galloping.

Cyclist

Location: Stroud - Stroud Hill Road
Type: Haunting Manifestation
Date / Time: Late 1910s - early 1920s
Further Comments: Two men on different occasions witnessed a cyclist crash into a hedge, falling over the top of it. On examination of the crash site, bike and rider could not be seen.

Steam Engine

Location: Stroud - Woodchester Mansion, near the town
Type: Haunting Manifestation
Date / Time: 2001, and 14 December 2019
Further Comments: A film crew spending a night in the building in 2001 reported loud disembodied banging, which climaxed as the sounds of a stream train charged through the house. The house is also reported to be haunted by a white lady, and the park surrounding the building is home to a Roman soldier, a figure resembling a monk, two American servicemen in Second World War uniforms, a headless horse and a dwarf which somersaults along the driveway. In 2019, a witness watched a horse and carriage driven by a man wearing a tall Victorian hat pass through a locked gate.

Roe Deer Kill

Location: Stroud - Woodchester Park
Type: ABC
Date / Time: January 2012 (corpse found), and throughout 2012
Further Comments: The corpse of a roe deer discovered by a member of the public had wounds similar to animals killed by big cats. The National Trust, who own the land, said they were carrying out tests on the body - these later came back with only deer and fox DNA detected. Video footage was also captured of the 'Stroud Valleys Wildcat' a couple of years prior to this attack, although was only analysed in 2012, with opinions differing to whether the creature was an ABC or just a large domestic cat.

Victorian Woman

Location: Sudeley - Sudeley Castle
Type: Haunting Manifestation
Date / Time: Varies: reputedly during August & September, but last seen May 1983
Further Comments: It is always around these two months that a ghostly housemaid is seen cleaning and dusting, dressed in Victorian working garb. A visiting American Professor reported encountering her during a visit to the castle. Other reported ghosts here include a woman in a green dress and a man with a hawk perched on his arm.

Monk

Location: Tangley - Heath between Tangley Hall and Bruern Abbey
Type: Haunting Manifestation
Date / Time: Unknown
Further Comments: A four mile long underground passageway is rumoured to connect these two buildings, and a ghostly monk walks the route (over ground rather than underground).

Footsteps

Location: Tewkesbury - Berkeley Arms public house
Type: Haunting Manifestation
Date / Time: Late twentieth century
Further Comments: The sounds of a person walking on the staircase are often heard, though the figure is never seen.

Boys

Location: Tewkesbury - Church Street
Type: Haunting Manifestation
Date / Time: 1982
Further Comments: Dressed in knickerbockers and other old fashioned clothing, these two ghostly boys move around the area on crutches. A couple out walking spotted the children, who vanished down an alleyway which ended in a high wall.

Monks

Location: Tewkesbury - Tewkesbury Abbey
Type: Haunting Manifestation
Date / Time: Twentieth century
Further Comments: Seen both inside and out, these figures drift forlornly about. Doors also open and close unaided by human hand, while the churchyard is said to be haunted by a screaming white woman.

Washing Powder

Location: Tewkesbury - Tewkesbury Museum, Barton Street
Type: Haunting Manifestation
Date / Time: July 2007
Further Comments: Staff who claimed to detect the smell of an old fashioned washing powder and felt a presence called in Three Counties Paranormal Organisation to investigate further. It was speculated that the phantom was a woman who looked after evacuees during the Second World War.

Young Woman

Location: Tewkesbury - Tewkesbury Rugby Club
Type: Unknown Ghost Type
Date / Time: 2008
Further Comments: A photograph taken at a wedding reception appears to show half a young woman with a long fringe near the DJ. The image could be an optical illusion created by the smoke machine and a nearby disco light.

Black Dog

Location: Tewkesbury - Tudor House Hotel
Type: Haunting Manifestation
Date / Time: Unknown
Further Comments: This former pet has been seen on the landing, though it is not known whether the white woman that haunts a bedroom is its mistress.

Chained Figure

Location: Tewkesbury - Ye Olde Black Bear Inn
Type: Haunting Manifestation
Date / Time: Unknown
Further Comments: As well as being chained, stories also state that this tragic figure has no head. It has been speculated that he is a Lancastrian soldier executed near to the inn.
