White Figure

Further Comments: A mysterious apparition is said to walk along the parapets of this building.

Like a Sea-Horse

Location: Weymouth - Off coast
Type: Cryptozoology
Date / Time: 1990s and 1757?
Further Comments: A creature which had the top half of a sea-horse but with the bottom part silver and covered in fins was spotted here by one witness who was reportedly hesitant in speaking of the sighting until they came across an earlier account describing a similar creature.

51 Vikings

Location: Weymouth - Ridgeway Hill, site of 2012 Olympics sailing centre

Further Comments: Self-professed psychics were quick to announce that the discovery of 51 bodies, most likely Vikings who were executed by Saxons in the tenth century, would lead to paranormal activity.

Portuguese Sailor

Location: Weymouth - Spice Ship public house, Preston
Type: Poltergeist
Date / Time: 2000s
Further Comments: This ghostly sailor would take the form of a poltergeist and create general mischief. It was blamed for phantom footsteps, setting off alarms and even pulling one landlord from his bed.


Location: Weymouth - Weymouth Golf Links
Type: Unknown Ghost Type
Date / Time: 21 August 1959, evening
Further Comments: On this date a couple on the golf course witnessed a ghostly figure, who became known as Gertie the Golf Links Ghost. Three days later, some 500 people turned up to see the ghost, including several young people wearing sheets. Unsurprisingly, the ghost was not seen again.

Old Sword

Location: Whitchurch Canonicorum - Old Five Bells Inn

Further Comments: An old sword was stored in a cupboard in this pub, with an old tale saying that if it were ever removed, the site would become haunted.

Talking Trees

Location: Whitcombe - Culliford Tree (also known as Came Wood)
Type: Other
Date / Time: 1960s
Further Comments: A woman who was planning to build a house on this barrow said that she changed her mind after hearing a voice talking to her, sounding as if it had come from the trees.


Location: Wimborne - B3078, close to Clapgate Junction
Type: Haunting Manifestation
Date / Time: Unknown
Further Comments: A coffin has been spotted on the roadside here, though it disappears if looked at closely. Some believe it belongs to someone who committed suicide, denying them the right to be buried in a churchyard, being buried close to this spot instead. A phantom black horse is also said to haunt this area.

Shapeless Mass

Location: Wimborne - Barley Mow public house
Type: Haunting Manifestation
Date / Time: Late twentieth century
Further Comments: The pub is haunted by an unearthly dark shape which hovers in the bar area. No one is too sure what exactly is it or what is represents.

Quarter Jack

Location: Wimborne - Church - West Tower
Type: Legend
Date / Time: Midnight
Further Comments: Quarter Jack sits within the West Tower and chimes the quarter hours. At midnight, he is said to climb down from the tower and wander the market town.


Location: Wimborne - Dickens House
Type: Haunting Manifestation
Date / Time: 1940s
Further Comments: This former man of the cloth is said to step out of a bricked up doorway wearing black and holding a bible.


Location: Wimborne - Griffin Hotel
Type: Haunting Manifestation
Date / Time: Around Christmas (reoccurring)
Further Comments: One room in the hotel is filled with sobbing around Christmas - some say the cries belong to a girl upset at her father's death. A grey haired woman in a brown skirt has also been reported in the hotel and was seen near Bedroom 4 during the 1940s.

Percy Newall

Location: Wimborne - King's House
Type: Haunting Manifestation
Date / Time: 06:00 (reoccurring)
Further Comments: This former reverend walks around the building early in the morning holding a bible, before disappearing into a room in the upper part of the building.


Location: Wimborne - Mill Lane
Type: Haunting Manifestation
Date / Time: 1990s
Further Comments: A former mill worker, Annie drowned in the River Allen while running away from the mill. Employees at the Riverside Cafe reported seeing the ghostly figure of a woman wearing a long dress in the area.


Location: Wimborne - Minster

Further Comments: The ghostly figure of a monk has been reported walking around the Minster.

Edwardian Boy

Location: Wimborne - Onslow House
Type: Haunting Manifestation
Date / Time: Twentieth century
Further Comments: A young boy in Edwardian attire reputedly haunts this building. He has been mistaken for a real person on at least one occasion.

Many Headless

Location: Wimborne - Rowlands Hill
Type: Haunting Manifestation
Date / Time: Some midnights (reoccurring)
Further Comments: A story which was told in the late nineteenth century says that a large hole once existed here. Occasionally at midnight headless horses driven by headless men would emerge.

Hooded Woman

Location: Wimborne St Giles - St Giles Estate
Type: Haunting Manifestation
Date / Time: Unknown - nineteenth century
Further Comments: A phantom woman in white, with a hood covering her face, was seen to rush into a hedge. Following this, the sounds of a horse and cart could be heard travelling through woodland, though nothing could be seen.


Location: Winterborne Abbas - Nearby hill
Type: Haunting Manifestation
Date / Time: 29 June 1662?
Further Comments: Two men out riding spotted, from a distance, many horsemen sporting military colours upon the hill. Expecting to cross paths with the army further down the road, they were surprised when they did not, and upon further investigation, there was no other sightings or reports.

Frozen Figures

Location: Winterborne Abbas - Nine Stones (stone circle)
Type: Legend - Old Nick
Date / Time: Still present
Further Comments: The stones are said to be either children (or maidens) who were petrified for dancing on the Sabbath, or the Devil, his wife, and his children.


Location: Winterborne Kingston - Barrow
Type: Legend
Date / Time: Dismissed 1858
Further Comments: It was once thought that a golden coffin was buried here, though a dig in 1858 discovered a lead one containing a Roman body.

Dressed Up

Location: Winterborne Monkton - General area
Type: Other
Date / Time: Unknown
Further Comments: Smugglers in the area would dress up as ghosts in this village to scare off curious customs officers.


Location: Winterborne Monkton - Pool of water off the A354 near Winterborne Monkton
Type: Haunting Manifestation
Date / Time: Unknown
Further Comments: An accident resulted in a coach, passengers and a team of horses all drowning in this pool. The accident is said to periodically reoccur.


Location: Winterborne St Martin - Maiden Castle (hill fort)
Type: Haunting Manifestation
Date / Time: 1980s?
Further Comments: Phantom soldiers have been reported in this area, while legend says this Iron Age hillfort was built by a race of giants.


Location: Winterborne Whitechurch (aka Winterborne Whitchurch) - Church
Type: Legend
Date / Time: Church still present
Further Comments: Construction on the church at this village began in Round Meadow, but the stones were all moved to another field by an unseen hand. Villagers (wisely) decided to finish the building in the new locale.
