Naked Wizard

Location: Alderley Edge - Likely to be around the B5087, but exact location not known
Type: Haunting Manifestation

Further Comments: Several witnesses have reported seeing a short old man, with a long white beard, running around naked in this area. Apparently, the figure was once approached by a police officer, only to vanish into thin air.

Old Nick

Location: Alderley Edge - Devil's Grave, Stormy Point
Type: Legend - Old Nick

Further Comments: Legend has it that if one runs around the cave known locally as 'Devil's Grave' widdershins three times, the Devil is raised! Another version says that running around it three times restores your virginity.

George

Location: Alderley Park - Churchill Tree public house
Type: Poltergeist
Date / Time: 2020s
Further Comments: The poltergeist who slams doors shut and breaks the occasional glass has been nicknamed George. Shouting has also been heard, although no source found. It is speculated that the entity is connected to the site being used as a hospital during the First World War.

Resting King

Further Comments: Another place in the UK where King Arthur lies in wait for when he is required once more.

Pipe Smoker

Location: Arley - Arley Hall
Type: Haunting Manifestation
Date / Time: Smoker unknown, dog in 2020
Further Comments: An aged figure has been observed on the site, puffing away at the demon weed. Some members of the cast and crew from BBC's Peaky Blinders were reported in the press as hearing a ghostly dog which haunts the site, shot dead by a gamekeeper after it killing its owner.

Staring Man

Location: Audlem - Audlem Road leading to Corbrook Court
Type: Haunting Manifestation
Date / Time: 01 October, 2001 and 2002 (reoccurring)
Further Comments: This entity was seen twice by the same witness, exactly a year separating the sightings. The witness said he was driving down the road when he saw the strange looking figure on the roadside, who stared into the car as he drove past. The figure did not appear in the rear view mirror.

Thing

Location: Barnton - Unnamed road in the area
Type: Haunting Manifestation
Date / Time: Likely pre twentieth century
Further Comments: Little is known about this phantom. One witness, returning from market with her pony and cart, described it as a large white 'thing'.

Veiled Lady

Location: Barnton - General area
Type: Haunting Manifestation
Date / Time: 1907
Further Comments: A black-clad woman with a veil was spotted several times walking the roads in the village during the early hours of the morning. One newspaper speculated the woman was a practical joker.

White Woman

Location: Barthomley - Church field
Type: Haunting Manifestation
Date / Time: Unknown
Further Comments: A lady in white haunts this field, while the road nearby is home to a phantom dog.

Hooded Figure

Location: Beeston - Wharton Lock Bridge
Type: Haunting Manifestation

Further Comments: A hooded figure crossing the bridge was spotted by a witness as she closed the lock gate. The woman's husband was travelling under the bridge at the time, and although did not see anything, felt immense sadness and experienced a tingling on his face.

Older Lady

Location: Birkenhead - Woodchurch Road
Type: Haunting Manifestation
Date / Time: 1905
Further Comments: Dressed in black and wearing a bonnet, an older lady would be briefly seen along this road before suddenly vanishing. A newspaper reported cyclists had to break sharply to avoid hitting her. Other witnesses spotted a small ball of fire which quickly disappeared.

Woman

Location: Birkenhead - Private residence close to the A552

Further Comments: Prior to renovation, a ghostly woman was spotted in the house.

Gipsy Woman

Location: Bollington - Ye Olde No. 3 public house
Type: Haunting Manifestation
Date / Time: 1970s?
Further Comments: The ghostly woman once reported here was said to be on the run from the police, and she drowned in a flooded stream nearby. A little girl was seen by a former landlady, who said the entity was dressed in blue, wore a poke bonnet, and walked straight through a closed bedroom door.

Old Lady

Location: Bollington - Private house along Grimshaw Lane
Type: Haunting Manifestation
Date / Time: 2003-2005
Further Comments: A former occupier of this house witnessed the ghost of an old lady who would stand in the corner of the kitchen. A phantom man would move around the property at night, and banging could be heard - the taps always coming in threes.

Machine Worker

Location: Bollington - Ingersley Vale Mill

Further Comments: The mill is reputedly home to the ghost of a female worker who died in a machine accident.

Not a Jogger

Location: Bosley - Macclesfield Canal, first bridge after top of Bosley lock flight on the permanent boat moorings
Type: Unknown Ghost Type
Date / Time: July 2007, circa 21:00h
Further Comments: A ten year old girl pointed out a figure running across a nearby field to her mother, saying the word 'jogger'. The mother looked and could see the person in black moving towards them, but as it approached, realised that the 'jogger' wore a monk's habit and no face under his hood. The figure stopped a short distance away, as if paused in mid-sprint, and when the woman turned to check her daughter was okay (she had run off back to the boat), the monk vanished.

Running Man

Location: Boughton Heath - Roads in the area
Type: Haunting Manifestation

Further Comments: Darting out from the side of the road, this speedy figure crosses in front of oncoming cars, before vanishing on the other side.

Floating Trees

Location: Brereton - Body of water known as Blackmere, close to Brereton Hall
Type: Legend
Date / Time: Prior to a death in the Brereton family
Further Comments: Before the death of a member of the family, tree trunks would be seen floating in the water. Occasionally the water would also turn red.

Strange Hound

Location: Bunbury - School Lane
Type: Shuck
Date / Time: Unknown
Further Comments: A phantom dog has been spotted in an area near the school.

Horseman

Location: Bunbury - College Lane
Type: Shuck
Date / Time: Unknown
Further Comments: A ghostly man on horseback is said to cross the lane before vanishing.

Nun

Location: Burton Constable - Burton Constable Hall
Type: Haunting Manifestation
Date / Time: Unknown
Further Comments: The phantom nun said to haunt this building walks near the area of a secret passage. Her portrait hangs in the Nun's Room.

Headless Airman

Location: Burtonwood - Old airfield
Type: Haunting Manifestation
Date / Time: Twentieth century
Further Comments: An airman has been observed standing around with no head - it is thought that he was decapitated as he tried to bail prior to crash landing.

Old Monk

Location: Capesthorne - Monk's Heath
Type: Haunting Manifestation
Date / Time: 1999
Further Comments: A witness reported driving past an old monk standing on the side of the road. The figure did not appear to have any feet. As the witness pulled the car over and climbed out, the monk disappeared.

Smokey Figures

Location: Capesthorne - Capesthorne Hall
Type: Haunting Manifestation
Date / Time: Unknown
Further Comments: A group of grey shadows have been seen heading towards the vault, while a grey lady walks the building's corridors. One member of the family reported seeing a severed arm floating outside a window, trying to enter.

Grey Monk

Location: Chester - St John's Cathedral
Type: Haunting Manifestation
Date / Time: 1970s, and 2003?
Further Comments: Heard talking in old English, this figure traditionally walks around the cathedral and made several appearances during the 1970s. On Halloween in 2003 a group of children approached the monk thinking he was a man dressed up for the occasion. When a bag was held out at him and one of the children asked, 'trick or treat', he replied 'I'll have a treat' before sticking his head into the container and eating the contents (wrappers and all).
