What could be seen as an early UFO sighting, a man walking along the beach on 29 March, 1890, watched a localised 'fog bank' sitting on the sand, with a huge flagpole sticking out. After ten minutes, the object rose and faded from view.

Orwell investigated further, and realised that the figure had vanished. Others who have seen the figure have described him as dressed like a gentleman.

This hillfort has been named by some as the location where King Arthur defeated the Saxons in the Sixth Century. Several phantasmic events also surround the Rings, including the sighting of a ghostly warrior on horseback, a spectral woman wearing a black dress, and an ugly dwarf-like entity which peers into the windows of parked cars. Finally, there are stories of a golden coffin buried in the area.
