Fading Figure

Location: Wakefield - Wooded footpath in Outwood area
Type: Haunting Manifestation
Date / Time: October 2007
Further Comments: While filming in Outwood, George Gunn captured footage of a strange figure that remains motionless while standing on a pathway. Two joggers can be seen passing through the blue misty shape. When the story was covered by BBC North Yorkshire, they heavily pushed belief the figure is little more than lens flare.

More of More Hall

Location: Wantley - General area
Type: Dragon
Date / Time: Unknown
Further Comments: When a fire breathing dragon visited his area, More of More Hall was called upon to slay the creature. As protection, More's armour was covered with fifteen centimetre long spikes. The fight between man and monster dragged on for two days and one night, before More had the opportunity to kick a spiked boot into the dragon's bottom (or mouth), which killed it.

Panther Size Cat

Location: Warter - Woods near Warter Priory
Type: ABC
Date / Time: 2001, circa 15.30h
Further Comments: While walking their dog, this witness watched a large black cat leap across the path twenty yards (18 metres) ahead of them. The dog, which was running around freely, immediately ran back to the owner, and both walked back the way they had came.

Soldier Inspecting

Location: Wath upon Dearne - Wath Wood Hospital

Date / Time: Unknown
Further Comments: When this building was a general hospital, it was believed that a Roman Soldier would appear at night and inspect every new admission as they slept.

Brown Gardener

Location: Watton - Watton Abbey
Type: Haunting Manifestation
Date / Time: Elfreda in 1956
Further Comments: This short, brown coloured figure has been seen in the abbey gardens, as have a number of females (some of whom are nuns) in different shapes and forms including a headless one that goes by the name Elfreda. During the mid twentieth century a team of workmen camping on the grounds heard the bell pealing, even though it had been removed several years previously.

Latimer the Dragon Slayer

Location: Well - Exact location not known

Further Comments: The dragon of Well was slain by a knight name Latimer who was a local landowner. A dragon is featured in the Latimer coat of arms.


Location: West Vale - Crossroads
Type: Unknown Ghost Type
Date / Time: 14 June 2012, 03:00h
Further Comments: While out for a night walk, a witness heard a child's cry near the crossroads. The sound became louder as they approached, by they were unable to find the source of the noise.

Glowing Ball

Location: West Witton - A684 between town and Swinithwaite
Type: Haunting Manifestation
Date / Time: Twentieth century
Further Comments: This dazzling ball of light hovers on the road only to vanish when cars and other vehicles move too close.

Three Dimensional Shadow

Location: West Witton - Church Lane
Type: Other
Date / Time: 18 September 2010, approx midnight
Further Comments: Retrieving his son's teddy bear from the car, this witness was startled by a metal clanking sound. In the lane he saw a shadow, but appeared to be 3 dimensional. It threw something down the road that appeared ring-shaped. There was another loud metal clanking noise behind the witness which caused him to look briefly over his shoulder - when he looked back in the direction of the figure it had vanished.

Dark Monk

Location: Weston - Bolton Priory
Type: Haunting Manifestation
Date / Time: Late twentieth century
Further Comments: The reports say that dozens of witnesses have seen this entity since the late 1800s, drifting in the priory grounds and sometimes straying into nearby roads and homes. On occasion he is accompanied by the smell of incense. A spectral white doe is also said to haunt the ruins, the spirit of a woman who founded the priory.

Further Comments: This three headed hound stands guard over a hoard of hidden treasure somewhere on this site.


Location: Wetherby - North Deighton Manor
Type: Haunting Manifestation
Date / Time: Unknown
Further Comments: These phantom footsteps have been described as weighty and sluggish.


Location: Wharfedale - Greenhow Lead Mines
Type: Haunting Manifestation
Date / Time: Unknown
Further Comments: The sounds of mining could often be heard here, even when no miners were down the shafts.


Location: Wharfedale - Trowler's Gill
Type: Shuck
Date / Time: Mid twentieth century?
Further Comments: This demonic dog is the size of a small bear, with yellow eyes as large as saucers. To stare the beast in one of these eyes will result in the death of the onlooker within days.

The Dragon of Wantley

Location: Wharncliffe Crags - Exact location not known
Type: Dragon
Date / Time: Unknown
Further Comments: This dragon made a nuisance of itself until the local hero Moore of Moore Hall donned a suit of spiked armour and kicked the creature between the legs. Needless to say, the dragon left the area with tears in its eyes.

Lady in Long Dress

Location: Wheatley - Long Can, currently the Brewery Visitors Centre
Type: Haunting Manifestation
Date / Time: Late twentieth century
Further Comments: An elderly female wearing a long dress has been reported in the upper part of the centre, and she is sometimes heard walking around once all the tourists have left.


Location: Whitby - Aislaby Hall
Type: Haunting Manifestation
Date / Time: Unknown
Further Comments: Heard moving around in a silken dress, this figure has never been observed with human eyes; quite unlike the large phantom coach seen being driven outside the hall.

Browne Bushell

Location: Whitby - Bagdale Hall Hotel
Type: Haunting Manifestation
Date / Time: Unknown
Further Comments: More often heard stalking the staircase than seen, Bushell was a pirate (so says legend, though the truth is probably quite different) who once owned the building. Children have also been heard playing just after midnight, in rooms devoid of life.


Location: Whitby - Esk Terrace

Further Comments: While staying in a house along this road, a witness heard the sound of a horse walking outside on the gravel - when they looked from the window, nothing could be seen.


Location: Whitby - Greenlane area, leading to the cliffs
Type: Haunting Manifestation
Date / Time: Unknown
Further Comments: This coach is said to materialise and travel to a nearby church, before suddenly charging towards the cliffs, finally vanishing as it plummets down one of the faces. Another entity that stalks the roads around here is never seen, but causes damage to vehicles and road signs.

Headless Man

Location: Whitby - Prospect Hill
Type: Haunting Manifestation
Date / Time: Unknown
Further Comments: This male entity has the removed item securely grasped under his arm.

Beast of the Bay

Location: Whitby - Several areas, including abbey, St Peter's Court woods, and surrounding villages
Type: ABC
Date / Time: 2001 onwards
Further Comments: A black panther-like cat has been observed a dozen times over a seven year period, on one occasion the cat was accompanied by a cub.

Petrified Snakes

Location: Whitby - Whitby Abbey
Type: Legend
Date / Time: Snakes unknown, St Hilda's ghost during summer months 10:00h - 12:00h
Further Comments: The abbey was besieged by snakes, until St Hilda turned up and drove them all off the edge of the cliff, where they turned to stone on the beach below. Her ghost is also reported to still gaze from the windows of the abbey. A few people have heard a choir singing in the empty building and one local legend says a team of headless horses pulling a hearse was once spotted by a man and boy walking in the area. Finally, treasure hidden in the abbey's grounds is protected by a headless figure in white.

Further Comments: Sounding like someone moving across flagstones, the echoing footfalls may belong to the owner of a ghostly dog also seen in the premises.

Gladys Saxton

Location: Wigglesworth - Plough Inn
Type: Haunting Manifestation
Date / Time: 1945 onwards
Further Comments: Gladys Saxton and her maid Margaret Harrison were killed in a fire at the building in 1945. Since that date, a woman wearing a long black dress has been seen by guests at the building. There is also a report of a phantom highwayman being spotted standing in a doorway.
