Serving Girl

Further Comments: This former vicarage was once said to be haunted by a serving girl who committed suicide in the building.

Poisonous Lizard

Location: Slingsby - Road from Hovingham to Malton
Type: Dragon

Further Comments: A great lizard that lived along this road, feasting on lonely travellers at night, was killed by a local hero and his pet dog. Unfortunately, both the victors died soon after the battle due to the delayed effect of the dragon's poison. One story says that the dragon was over a mile long.

Further Comments: Sir John Conyers killed this worm by stabbing it under a wing, marking the spot with a stone and donating the used sword to Durham Cathedral.


Location: Sowerby - Pudding Pie Hill

Further Comments: Fairies can be heard talking within the hill if the listener either runs around the hill nine times anticlockwise while the moon is waxing, or they stick a knife into the centre of the mound, or both.


Location: Soyland - Bluebell (or Blue Ball) Inn

Further Comments: Drowned after an affair with the landlord resulted in an unwanted pregnancy, Faith is heard running along the corridors of the public house after hours; protesting that while all knew her death was murder, no one questioned the official finding that called it a suicide.

Robin Roundcap

Location: Spaldington - Spaldington Hall (demolished 1838)

Further Comments: An elf took up residence here, putting out fires and spoiling food. He was banished to a nearby well by three members of the clergy.

Mill Stones

Location: Stainforth - Robin Hood's Mill

Further Comments: The miller in question had his mill swallowed into the ground after he worked on the Sabbath, though the grinding of the mill stones was said to be heard for years after.


Location: Staithes - Boulby Cliff

Further Comments: This young woman was killed in 1807 when the cliff path gave way, a large, heavy rock crushing her skull. Her headless shade still walks the path as it once was, several metres out from the current one.

Grey Lady

Further Comments: The Grey Lady is another feminine spirit which haunts Yorkshire's large halls.

King Harold's Army

Location: Stamford Bridge - Area over battlefield

Further Comments: The reenactment of Harold's 1066 victory has been observed in the skies over the field where much blood was shed.

Vanishing John

Location: Stamford Bridge - Garrowby Hill

Further Comments: A female witness reported interaction with the ghost of a World War 2 RAF officer at this site. The figure in brown walked up to her, introduced himself as 'John' and, as he touched her hand, vanished.

Cat Lover

Location: Stanbury - The Old Silent Inn

Further Comments: The rear of this public house is reportedly frequented by a spectral old lady who fed all the local stray cats. The ringing of phantom bells has been heard coming from nearby moorland.

Gassy Ghost

Location: Stapleton - Bridge Inn
Type: Poltergeist

Further Comments: The poltergeist here managed to terrify the landlord by turning the cooker gas taps on during the night. Disembodied footsteps could be heard late at night.

Naked Gypsy

Location: Staxton - Public house
Type: Haunting Manifestation
Date / Time: 1980s
Further Comments: A gypsy girl was rumoured to have been killed by a landlord here during the 1600's - bones found in the pub in the 1980s were said to be hers, and once disturbed, a state of ghostly occurrences occurred.

White Woman with Handbag

Location: Stirton (near Skipton) - Road through the hamlet

Date / Time: August 2009, around 03:00h
Further Comments: Four friends driving through the area in the early hours of the morning caught in their headlights an older woman dressed in white, holding a white handbag, standing on a narrow grass verge. Concerned for the woman's wellbeing, they stopped around 25 metres up the road and reversed back to check on the woman, Although only thirty or so seconds had passed, the woman had gone, and a further twenty minutes of checking fields and further along the road turned up nothing.

Children Playing

Further Comments: Seen playing around an electricity pylon, the children faded when approached.

Cowled Figure

Location: Stocksbridge - Stocksbridge bypass
Type: Haunting Manifestation
Date / Time: 1990s, 2000s
Further Comments: The scene of many accidents (over 120 since 1988, with 23 dying since 1998), the area is said to be haunted by several ghosts; a hooded man has been seen here, as have Victorian children who are thought to have died in a mining accident.

Bald Man

Location: Stockton - Council flat, exact location not known

Further Comments: This ghost look an unhealthy interest in a nineteen year old girl living in a council flat with her parents - she woke up one night to find the entity standing by her with a hand on her leg, asking her to 'come into the bathroom'. Her screams drove it away, and brought her parents running. An exorcism was finally carried out on the property.

Army on Manoeuvres

Further Comments: Several people reported seeing a forest in the sky, with soldiers in black uniforms moving around in formation. More soldiers wore white clothing, but appeared to be allied to the other troops, rather than in conflict.

Antisocial Woman

Location: Stockton-on-Tees - Manhattan's public house

Further Comments: North Yorkshire Paranormal Investigations' claimed this building to be one of Teesside's most haunted, home to a phantom child, and a woman who instructed visitors to leave.

Wise Man of Stokesley

Location: Stokesley - No exact location
Type: Legend
Date / Time: 1800s
Further Comments: When John Wrightson moved to the area, he declared himself to be the seventh son of a seventh daughter, gifted with strange powers of healing and fortune telling. However, the villages figured out he was a fraud, resulting in Wrightson fleeing from the village. Wrightson eventually committed suicide in Hovingham, while facing trial on assault charges.

The Maid Did It

Location: Storrs - Hall

Date / Time: 1878
Further Comments: The police were called to investigate a poltergeist outbreak which consisted of rapping and windows being broken. While servants armed with pitchforks failed to solve the mystery, a fourteen year old serving girl confessed her guilt to the police. As an aside, the site was traditionally home to a ghost, but the entity was purportedly laid in the first half of the eighteenth century.

Further Comments: A man in a long black coat or cape and a large brimmed hat is said to haunt this area, walking alongside people before disappearing. His name, Sandyman, comes from an advert for Sandeman Port which contained a similar looking figure.

Headless Dog

Location: Swaledale - Humpbacked bridge leading to Ivelet

Further Comments: The appearance of this headless hound denoted a forthcoming tragedy.
