Man in Grey

Location: Bradford - Club house at the West Bowling Golf Club
Type: Haunting Manifestation
Date / Time: Early 1970s
Further Comments: A ghostly figure in a grey suit was seen by a barmaid in the women's toilet. The caretaker reported seeing balls move around the snooker table late at night, and hearing footsteps in an empty locker room.

Fairy Photographs

Location: Bradford - Cottingley, fields around
Type: Fairy

Further Comments: Becoming world famous, the handful of fairy photographs taken here by the girls Elsie & Frances are still a bone of contention in the fortean world. The book by Joe Cooper, 'The Case of the Cottingley Fairies', is worth reading for further (and very detailed) information.


Location: Bradford - Dog & Gun public house, Wibsey

Further Comments: Said to be 'historically haunted', although by what is unclear, this public house featured in the local press after CCTV caught 'orbs' in the cellar and bar (most likely to be created by dust and a strong light source close to the lens).

Floating Heads

Location: Bradford - Mount Royd
Type: Haunting Manifestation

Further Comments: Photographed by a local girl, two bodiless heads can be seen in a night time image, floating along the street. Due to the blurred image, however, there could be a rational explanation. See Fortean Times issue 123 for the photograph.

Guard Duty

Location: Bradford - Paper Hall, near Church Bank
Type: Haunting Manifestation

Further Comments: This figure donned in shiny white armour was seen holding a spear and whistling merrily by a man walking past the hall.

Big Bird

Location: Bradford - Skies above town
Type: Cryptozoology
Date / Time: 1982 / 83
Further Comments: A large bird seen in the skies above the town was originally identified as an eagle or an escaped condor by its witnesses; twenty years later a few of them now claim it to have been a pterodactyl.

Sir Henry Irving

Location: Bradford - Theatre Royal
Type: Haunting Manifestation
Date / Time: Twentieth century
Further Comments: The location he last played before dying, Irving is still said to walk the floor at the theatre.

Water Spirit

Location: Bradley - White Cross Inn
Type: Haunting Manifestation
Date / Time: 1980s
Further Comments: This ghost, though to be a former landlord, would flush the toilet late at night, and create puddles of water and beer in places where these liquids could not possibly form naturally.

Something Felt by Dogs

Location: Bridlington - Bessingby Fields
Type: Other
Date / Time: Circa 2014
Further Comments: Dogs are reported to behave strangely in a specific part of the park where it is speculated a Roman road once ran.

Harold Hill

Location: Bridlington - Bessingby Road, private house
Type: Haunting Manifestation
Date / Time: 1998
Further Comments: This bearded old man, once a former owner of the property, still occasionally returns even though the current family have had the house blessed.


Location: Bridlington - Bridlington Spa
Type: Haunting Manifestation
Date / Time: Late 1990s
Further Comments: The Spa complex is rumoured to be haunted by someone who fell to their death from a balcony. Robert Eastwood, a former worker at the Spa, reported a jammed store room door that opened after an unseen hand lifted the latch and gave a hard push.

Red and Orange Spheres

Location: Bridlington - Dotterel junction area
Type: UFO
Date / Time: March 2007
Further Comments: Witness David Hinde reported two spherical lights in the sky, glowing red and orange. He watched them for ten minutes while they darted around, defying the movements of conventional aircraft.

St John

Location: Bridlington - Sea and general area
Type: Other
Date / Time: Unknown
Further Comments: St John was the Prior of the local church, with several miracles attributed to him during his life. He once spotted a fishing boat in trouble in Bridlington Bay - he walked out on the sea and pulled it to safety.


Location: Bridlington - South beach - sea

Date / Time: Early December 2014, morning
Further Comments: A couple walking their dog spotted an old sailing ship anchored off the coast. One of the witnesses, a ship enthusiast, thought it to be a modern replica. Periodically looking back at the vessel while walking away, as the witnesses stepped off the beach they realised the ship had vanished. The enthusiast used ship tracking websites to try to identify the ship, but no such vessel was in the area.

Ginger Cat

Location: Brodsworth - Brodsworth Hall
Type: Haunting Manifestation

Further Comments: The hall is reputed to be haunted by a ginger cat and the ghosts of former owners.

Two Old Ladies

Location: Brodsworth - St Michael and All Angel's church
Type: Haunting Manifestation
Date / Time: Summer 1980
Further Comments: A young couple walking through the churchyard spotted two elderly ladies in clothing from a bygone era walking towards them along the same path. The younger pair stepped into the church porch, listening to the old women's approaching footsteps which suddenly stopped in mid-stride. They stepped out of the church pouch and looked for the women, who had just vanished.


Location: Buckstones - A640, near the Nont Sarah public house
Type: Haunting Manifestation
Date / Time: 1968
Further Comments: A policeman returning home after a late shift spotted a small group of horsemen dressed in Cavalier-style clothing riding along this road. He drove past the figures three times to prove to himself that they were not a figment of his imagination.

Robin's Home

Location: Burghwallis - Robin Hood's Well

Date / Time: Unknown
Further Comments: The well marks the area which was once Barnsdale Forest, a huge expense of woodland suitable for a rogue's hideaway.


Location: Burn - Wheatsheaf public house
Type: Haunting Manifestation
Date / Time: Unknown, but said to be most likely to appear on Mothers Day
Further Comments: This pub is said to be home to a phantom airman wearing a great coat, most likely to be seen on the fourth Sunday of Lent.

Fairy Hangout

Location: Burnsall - Elbolton Hill
Type: Fairy
Date / Time: Unknown
Further Comments: Pixies, fairies and other members of the little people are still said to live in and around the hill.

Pam the Fiddler

Location: Burnsall - General area
Type: Haunting Manifestation
Date / Time: Unknown
Further Comments: Pam, the local schoolmaster, was killed by the village vicar after refusing to stop fiddling around the area after dark. The vicar covered up the crime by secretly burying Pam's body; within a few weeks villagers began to report hearing Pam playing the fiddle, and some claimed to have seen him, though his head had changed into that of a goat.

Misty Figures

Location: Burrill - Hell Hole Wood
Type: Haunting Manifestation
Date / Time: April 2012
Further Comments: A couple walking from Thornton Watlass spotted a number of misty figures moving around the wood. It is said that the Devil would use the woods as a hiding place.


Location: Burton Agnes - Burton Agnes Hall
Type: Haunting Manifestation
Date / Time: Seventeenth century?
Further Comments: Falling in love with the hall, Anne decreed that upon death her head should be severed and stored within the house. Immediately after she was murdered, the house was plagued by crashes and bangs, which ceased when her head was removed from the coffin and brought inside. Her skull has since been bricked up to ensure it never accidentally leaves the homestead.


Location: Burton Pidsea - Nancy Inn
Type: Haunting Manifestation
Date / Time: Twenty-first century
Further Comments: Once a blacksmiths, this public house still has an anvil within which, it is said, if removed causes strange things to occur. One member of staff moved the anvil, only to see it rise and fall again on its own accord. Talking, laughing and the clink of glasses can be heard coming from an empty room.

Thomas Busby

Location: Busby Stoop - Along Thirsk to Ripon road
Type: Haunting Manifestation
Date / Time: May 1703
Further Comments: Hanged here after murdering his father in law, the shade of Thomas has been seen still dangling from a gibbet.
