Returning Items

Location: Swindon - Boundary House public house

Further Comments: Manager Dave Howells called in a paranormal investigation team after he noticed items which had vanished turn up again years later. The team claimed to have found five ghosts in total; Catherine and James in the bar, Amy and Tilly in the upper part of the building, and Alf in the basement.

Flying Glasses

Location: Swindon - Clifton Hotel

Further Comments: For two concurrent nights, a sherry glass was seen to rise from the shelf and fall to the floor without breaking.


Location: Swindon - Council house, Melksham Close
Type: Poltergeist
Date / Time: August 1985
Further Comments: Tenant Beverley Walsh claimed she felt unseen hands pull at clothing and that her bed was moved across the room by this entity. It was said that a few years previous, a couple were driven out of the property by the same presence.

Thatched Cottage

Location: Swindon - Ermine Street

Further Comments: A female cyclist caught in a storm took cover in a thatched cottage along this road, warming herself by an open fire with an old grey haired man for company. She later discovered that the cottage had been overgrown and dilapidated since the previous century.


Location: Swindon - Fire Station

Date / Time: 1960s, 1970s
Further Comments: Footsteps were heard in the upper parts of the building when no one should have been there, and strange footprints appeared on freshly polished floors, stopping abruptly half way across. One firefighter awoke in the dorm to see a grey shadowy figure standing over him, while another followed a figure into the toilets, only to find them empty. One fire officer suggested it was the ghost of a woman who drowned in the canal, over which the fire station was built.

Black Dog

Location: Swindon - Hill in Toothill area (was known as The Toot)

Further Comments: This hound was once believed to haunt the area, before the estate became a suburb of Swindon.

Cross Shape

Location: Swindon - Ladder Lane
Type: Legend
Date / Time: Unknown
Further Comments: The place where a rider was thrown from a horse and killed is said to be marked by a cross-shaped spot where grass can not grow.

Mount Badon

Location: Swindon - Liddington Castle
Type: Legend
Date / Time: Unknown
Further Comments: This defensive hillfort may be the mythical Mount Baton, where King Arthur defeated the Saxons.


Location: Tedworth (now North Tidworth) - Tedworth House, now Zouch Manor

Further Comments: One of the first hauntings in the UK to be documented, the drummer of Tedworth House briefly caused havoc; banging at all hours of the day and night, bedclothes being torn off, and the children were thrown out of bed.

Funeral Possession

Location: The Wansdyke - Various places along the post Roman dyke

Further Comments: A wooden wagon bearing a coffin, pulled by jet black horses, has been spotted along this old dyke. The spectacle vanishes if witnesses become too close.

Figure in a Top Hat

Location: Tilshead - St Thomas a Becket Church
Type: Unknown Ghost Type
Date / Time: 26 March 2012, morning
Further Comments: A ten year old girl became upset and left this church after she spotted a semi-transparent figure with grey hair and a top hat sitting in the box pews. When she started to return back inside the church, she saw the figure once again, sitting closer to the door.

Fair Nell

Location: Tisbury - Medieval Place Farm

Further Comments: A former nun who was once based on this site, Nell was condemned to walk the earth for the rest of time after falling in love with a local man.

Molly Peart

Location: Tisbury - Pyt House
Type: Haunting Manifestation
Date / Time: Unknown
Further Comments: Molly's body lies in the cellar of this building. The last time the corpse was moved out of the house, loud banging could be heard at night and misfortunes befell family members until the body was replaced.


Location: Tisbury - Tisbury Bridge (aka Molly's Bridge)
Type: Haunting Manifestation
Date / Time: Twenty-first century
Further Comments: A local legend says that Molly Peart was hanged from this bridge (she was actually hanged in Oxfordshire) and that her ghost haunts the site. The legend also says a child was hanged at the site. One witness reported shadowy figures passing the window on their parked car while close by and something swinging from the bridge.

Frog Fall

Location: Trowbridge - Municipal swimming pool
Type: Other
Date / Time: 16 June 1939, approx 16:30h
Further Comments: During a heavy shower of rain, the superintendent and several children at the pool watched hundreds of small frogs falling upon the path around the pool.

Interrupted Lovers

Location: Trowbridge - The original Wyke House (not the current house built in 1864)
Type: Haunting Manifestation
Date / Time: Early nineteenth century?
Further Comments: While having an affair with one of his servants, John Faltham encountered a ghost which caused great concern to himself and the rest of the house. The ghost was eventually banished into a large chest by a team of twelve clergymen.

Back Stabbing

Location: Unnamed village within 10 miles of Swindon - The Beeches
Type: Haunting Manifestation
Date / Time: Twentieth century
Further Comments: Elliot O'Donnell, in The Midnight Hearse claims this cottage as being haunted by the sounds of a woman crying 'Take it out, for God's sake take it out" before one final scream fills the air. The woman was stabbed at the front door by an unknown assailant and managed to stagger back inside the cottage before dying. O'Donnell does not name the village; the only clue he gives is that it is along the Great West Road.

Further Comments: Heard but not seen, a phantom coach occasionally crosses the bridge.

Lost Pilot

Location: Upavon - Perimeter around former RAF Upavon
Type: Haunting Manifestation
Date / Time: 1940s
Further Comments: This shadowy pilot was killed when his First World War aircraft crash landed in nearby fields. He was reported several times by men on guard duty.


Location: Upton Scudamore - Farm track, opposite a lane leading down to Upton Scudamore
Type: UFO
Date / Time: 09 October 1976
Further Comments: On a dense, foggy night, author Andrew Collins (pictured) and a team of four other paranormal researchers encountered a small light that moved a few feet off the ground, rather like the headlamp of a moped. The light vanished into a area blocked by low hedgerow, and when they examined the ground the following morning, there was no evidence of tread prints. (Photograph supplied by Andrew Collins)

Further Comments: A phantom monk was observed gliding along the road before heading towards the church. A local legend declares a tunnel to be underneath the route that the phantom takes.

Black Dog

Further Comments: This hound is thought to be a harbinger of misfortune.

Old Marlow

Location: Wanborough - Harrow Inn
Type: Haunting Manifestation
Date / Time: Unknown
Further Comments: A coach driver, Marlow crashed his vehicle outside the inn. His ghost now enters the building, searching for his missing passengers.

Lady Blanche Arundell

Location: Wardour - Wardour Castle
Type: Haunting Manifestation
Date / Time: Unknown
Further Comments: Lady Blanche has been seen as the sun sinks beneath the horizon, dressed for battle - she and 25 others fought the Roundheads here in 1643. The family Arundell were haunted by white owls, which would appear just prior to a death in the family.
