Uniformed Pixies

Location: Brynberian (Dyfed) - Pentre Ifan Cromlech

Further Comments: These little people, standing a couple of feet tall, wore red military uniforms, as if guarding the burial site. Other people have seen the little people dancing over the dolman.

Monster's Grave

Location: Brynberian (Dyfed) - Prehistoric burial ground

Further Comments: The people of the village once found a water monster in a nearby lake - they took the creature and buried it on the mountain slope.


Location: Buckholt (Clwyd) - Farm off the old Abergavenny road
Type: Haunting Manifestation
Date / Time: Mid twentieth century?
Further Comments: One witness claimed to have tried to slap a cow to waken it - her hand passed straight through the creature before it vanished. The farmhouse itself was said to be the home of a poltergeist which would open and close doors and flick light switches.

Cwn Annwn

Location: Buckholt (Gwent) - Road through the area
Type: Shuck
Date / Time: 1961 onwards (hound), face sighting possibly mid twentieth century
Further Comments: A driver passing through Buckholt in 1961 reported seeing a large black hound, believed to be Cwn Annwn, a spectral hound of Annwn, although some people believe it to be a ghostly donkey. More recently, although no date has been mentioned, the hound has been seen in a nearby cottage which is also haunted by two phantom people (one short, one headless). Finally, a witness encountered the face of a beautiful woman along the road. The witness apologised and stepped to one side before realising that there was no one else present.

Walled Up Woman

Location: Burgedin (Powys) - Lock-keepers cottage, Montgomery Canal

Further Comments: This building is said to be home to a woman who was bricked up in the basement after trying to run off with a man.

Instant Poetry

Location: Cadair Idris (Gwynedd) - General area of the mountain peaks
Type: Legend
Date / Time: Unknown
Further Comments: Anyone who spends a night camped on this mountain range is said to either wake up a poetic genius or go insane. The spectral hounds of Annwn, the Cwn Annwn, are also said to stalk the mountains, their howls a warning of a death to soon follow.

Water Monster

Location: Cadair Idris (Gwynedd) - Llyn Cau (lake)

Further Comments: Rumoured to be a bottomless lake, the waters are reportedly home to a water monster that once drowned a man foolish enough to try to swim across it.

Devil's Footprints

Location: Cadair Idris (Gwynedd) - Rock of the Evil One (crag)
Type: Legend - Old Nick
Date / Time: Still present
Further Comments: Prints left by the hoofs of the Devil can still be seen in the rock, after Old Nick danced with joy after discovering a group of men playing cards on the Sabbath.

The Murder Stone

Location: Cadoxton (South Glamorgan) - Churchyard
Type: Haunting Manifestation
Date / Time: Stone still present, sighting of ghosts pre 1920s?
Further Comments: A stone monument was erected in the churchyard in memory of Margaret Williams, whose murdered body was found on nearby marshland in 1822. Because she was pregnant at the time of her death, it was widely believed her lover and her killer were the same man. Nonetheless, Margaret's killer was never caught. Two ghostly forms were reported by the stones, thought to be of Margaret and her former lover.

Dark Lady

Location: Caergwrle (Clwyd) - Caergwrle Castle
Type: Haunting Manifestation
Date / Time: Late twentieth century
Further Comments: This female form has been seen slowly moving around the grounds of the old castle; her feet several centimetres clear of the soft earth below.

Misty Figure

Location: Caergwrle (Clwyd) - Packhorse Bridge
Type: Haunting Manifestation
Date / Time: 2000s
Further Comments: A team from the Cheshire Paranormal Society photographed a strange white figure crossing this footbridge late at night during one of their vigils. It is said a total of three spirits haunt the bridge, a young girl and two older women.

Round Table

Location: Caerleon (Gwent) - Exact area unknown

Further Comments: Some have named Caerleon as the site of the original Arthurian round table and of Camelot.


Location: Caernarfon (Gwynedd) - Black Boy Inn

Further Comments: The bar area of this inn is reputedly haunted.

Floating Lady

Location: Caernarfon (Gwynedd) - Caernarfon Castle
Type: Haunting Manifestation
Date / Time: 2001
Further Comments: This shade, sometimes seen drifting down the corridors, is thought to be responsible for messing around with electrical equipment left out at night. A photograph was taken by a tourist in 2001 shows a blue misty form in the courtyard.

Old Hag

Location: Caerphilly (Mid Glamorgan) - Caerphilly Castle
Type: Crisis Manifestation
Date / Time: Marks a death in the de Clares family
Further Comments: Once owners of the building, the de Clares family were haunted by a Gwrach-y-rhibyn, warning them about an eminent death in the family. Now they have moved away, the ghost is still seen - drifting towards the castle only to disappear once she enters the ruins. A figure dressed in red also haunts the building.


Location: Caerphilly (Mid Glamorgan) - Caerphilly Mountain
Type: UFO
Date / Time: 18 May 1909
Further Comments: Two men speaking in a strange tongue were seen by a witness here - they made their escape in an airship. Though it is thought they were German, no country in the world had an airship capable of making that kind of flight at the time.


Location: Caerphilly (Mid Glamorgan) - Morgan Jones Park

Date / Time: March 2003, 00:30h (approx)
Further Comments: Two friends walking home in the early hours of the morning spotted the silhouettes of a man, woman and child walking towards them along the same path, around one hundred yards away. As the distance fell to fifty yards, the family faded and vanished.

Location: Caerphilly (Mid Glamorgan) - Panteg Inn

Further Comments: This polt makes his presence felt by animating inanimate objects.


Location: Caerphilly (Mid Glamorgan) - Private residence at Penybryn
Type: Unknown Ghost Type
Date / Time: August 2007
Further Comments: A visitor watched a blonde lady, in her early twenties, walk past him on the landing of a friend's place. He spoke to her, but she ignored him. A short time later the visitor asked his friend who the blonde woman was, only to find out that he should have been alone at the site. A search of the residence found nothing.

Black Monk

Location: Caldey Island (Dyfed) - Priory and all over Island
Type: Haunting Manifestation
Date / Time: 1920s, though no sightings since 1929
Further Comments: Standing taller than six foot, the monk dressed in black was said to rise from the graveyard at the old priory before drifting off. Though reported on the land immediately around the priory, some islanders encountered him further away, in their homes or on the roads. The ghosts of a white lady and of a madman were also said to haunt the island at some point in the dim and distant past.

Travellers' Rest

Location: Capel Curig (Clwyd) - Devil's Kitchen
Type: Legend - Old Nick

Further Comments: The Devil sometimes beckons road weary travellers into his kitchen - it is not known what happens to them once inside.


Location: Cardiff (South Glamorgan) - Cardiff Castle
Type: Crisis Manifestation
Date / Time: Coach last seen 1868
Further Comments: A coach is reportedly heard when a member of the Hastings family is due to die. At the castle it was heard by John Boyle, the night his cousin the Marquis Hastings died. Other ghosts reported to haunt the castle include the second Marques of Bute (who walks through several walls), a faceless woman in a long skirt who is known as Sarah, and a three metre tall giant who walks around the park.

The Smoking Man

Location: Cardiff (South Glamorgan) - Cardiff Docks
Type: Haunting Manifestation
Date / Time: November 1962
Further Comments: A teenager who was fishing with a friend encountered a man smoking a pipe, wearing a trilby hat and either a trench coat or overcoat. The strange figure vanished in a large empty field of flat prairie grass.


Location: Cardiff (South Glamorgan) - Cardiff Royal Infirmary Hospital
Type: Haunting Manifestation
Date / Time: 2000s
Further Comments: Several ghost stories have been reported from this hospital. A plumber observed a matron in old fashioned clothing and bonnet who vanished without warning. A local legend says that if the woman in grey offers you a drink, do not take it, otherwise you shall die within a week.

White Lady

Location: Cardiff (South Glamorgan) - Castell Coch
Type: Haunting Manifestation
Date / Time: Unknown
Further Comments: A 'new' building on the site of thirteenth century ruins, the White Lady once haunted the older area, and now has set up shop in the replacement castle. The woman is said to have died of a broken heart after her son drowned in a local pond. There is also reported to be a buried hoard of treasure here, zealously protected by three eagles, while an ethereal cavalier walks the castle grounds.
