Clwyd Ghosts, Folklore and Forteana

German Soldiers

Location: Llandudno - Llandudno Museum

Further Comments: The ghosts of two German soldiers are said to haunt a room which once acted as a First World War military office. The smell of tobacco has also been reported as coming from the same room.

Long Sea Monster

Location: Llandudno - Sea
Type: Cryptozoology
Date / Time: 03 September 1882
Further Comments: From the safety of the town pier, a small group of people watched a sixty meter long sea monster travelling at 50 kph as it moved towards the Great Orme.

Devil's Home

Location: Llandulas - Pen y Cefn Mount
Type: Legend - Old Nick
Date / Time: Unknown
Further Comments: Old Nick once set up home in a cave here but was driven away by clergy after his presence grew too much for the locals to tolerate.

Carreg Ateb

Location: Llandyrnog - The Carreg Ateb stone (currently buried)
Type: Haunting Manifestation
Date / Time: Unknown
Further Comments: When it stood on the road between the village and Moel-y-Parc, the area around the stone was said to be haunted by a man murdered by his brother. However, a farmer has now buried the boulder and it is unknown whether the ghost will be affected.

Seven Husbands and Catrin Tudur

Location: Llanefydd - Berain House
Type: Haunting Manifestation
Date / Time: Unknown
Further Comments: Catrin Tudur developed a habit of marrying wealthy men, only to kill them off and keep the money for herself. As punishment for her crime, her ghost now spends the rest of eternity in the company of her spouses.

Cursing Well

Location: Llanelian-yn-Rhos - St Ellian's Well (no longer present)
Type: Curse
Date / Time: Late Nineteenth century
Further Comments: Destroyed by the local clergy, the well which once stood here was used to curse one's enemies. The hex could be reversed if the pebble dropped into waters by the giver of the curse could be found and removed from the well.

Man in Grey

Location: Llanfwrog (near Ruthin) - Cafe attached to village church
Type: Haunting Manifestation
Date / Time: October 1950
Further Comments: A research group visited this location to investigate a reported poltergeist, although the party encountered an old man dressed in grey who spoke in Welsh. The entity claimed to be a former landlord named Owen Roberts and, and a little chat, the ghost agreed to leave the building. It was later discovered that a local man named Owen Roberts had died in 1800.

Monks

Location: Llangollen - Britannia Inn
Type: Haunting Manifestation
Date / Time: Unknown
Further Comments: Phantom monks are said to haunt this inn, which may have been partially constructed using materials from Valle Crucis Abbey. One woman is said to have awoken surrounded by monks which slowly faded from view.

Serving Maid

Location: Llangollen - Cambrian House
Type: Haunting Manifestation
Date / Time: Unknown
Further Comments: Just one of the ghosts said to haunt the house, this phantom maid is said to have died in a tragic accident. Other ghostly occupants include a man in a grey suit, disembodied singing, and the sound of horses in the stable.

Fiddling Fairies

Location: Llangollen - Castell Dinas Bran
Type: Fairy
Date / Time: Unknown
Further Comments: An innocent shepherd here was caught up in a fairy dance - he could not stop 'strutting his funky stuff' until the following day, when his master found him in a field. The location is also a contender for the resting place of the Holy Grail.

Man wearing Apron

Location: Llangollen - Hand Hotel
Type: Haunting Manifestation
Date / Time: 1980s
Further Comments: A former worker at the hotel reported seeing a man wearing a leather apron in the cellar. The figure was tapping on a barrel, and the witness thought him to be a real person, until told that he was the only person down there. The building is also reported to be haunted by a woman in grey and another figure that stands by the organ.

Ladies of Llangollen

Location: Llangollen - Plas Newydd
Type: Haunting Manifestation
Date / Time: Unknown
Further Comments: well known for their love of traditional Welsh dress and entertaining the Gothic poets, Lady Eleanor Butler and Sarah Ponsonby are reported to drift around their shared former home.

Flying Pig

Location: Llangollen - Skies over area
Type: Cryptozoology
Date / Time: 2 September 1905
Further Comments: Witnesses reported a large flying creature over the town; it resembled a pig of tremendous size, with stumpy webbed feet.

Gamekeeper

Location: Llangollen - Tyn Dwr Hall
Type: Haunting Manifestation
Date / Time: Unknown
Further Comments: A handful of ghosts are said to haunt this building and surrounding area, including a gamekeeper, a woman in a rustling dress, a green mist, and the sounds of children laughing.

Owain Glyndwr

Location: Llangollen - Valle Crucis Abbey
Type: Haunting Manifestation
Date / Time: Owain reports unknown, golden figures in the 1930s
Further Comments: Owain Glyndwr, the last native Welsh person to hold the title Prince of Wales, is said to be one of the phantoms reported at the abbey. Another story is that during the 1930s, one person spotted the front of the ruins bathed in a circle of light, with figures wearing golden clothing and helmets. The witness was with their aunt, who could not see anything. Finally, religious chanting has been heard in the area, though no source of the song can be found.

Murdered Travellers

Location: Llangwm - Glyn Diffwys chasm
Type: Haunting Manifestation
Date / Time: Unknown
Further Comments: Dozens of souls haunt this valley, murdered by bandits who once found the area to offer easy pickings.

Person in Duffle Coat

Location: Llanrhos - Road close to St Hilary's church
Type: Haunting Manifestation
Date / Time: 1959
Further Comments: Police officer Gareth Jones spotted a figure in a duffle coat walking along this lane in the rain. He drove alongside the figure and wound down his window to offer them a lift, but they had vanished. Jones later found out that others had seen ghostly figures in the same area.

Devil's Hideout

Location: Llanrhos - The Devil's Tree (old oak tree)
Type: Legend - Old Nick
Date / Time: Eighteenth century?
Further Comments: Contained within the branches of this old, withered oak tree, Old Nick sometimes hides. The troublesome Devil would leap onto the backs of men as they passed, draining their energy and not letting go until they reached home or somewhere safe.

Ghost Hunts

Location: Llansannan - Gwylfa Hiraethog
Type: Other
Date / Time: 1960s
Further Comments: It is unclear whether this site has any 'haunting' stories attached to it, other than the claim it was used for ghost hunts during the 1960s.

Hood

Location: Llansannan - Robin Hood's Grave (tumulus)
Type: Haunting Manifestation
Date / Time: Still present
Further Comments: Some have named this site as the final resting place of Robin Hood. It is reputedly haunted, and some still avoid passing the tumulus at night.

Miner

Location: Llay - Llay Miners Welfare Institute
Type: Haunting Manifestation
Date / Time: Unknown
Further Comments: This site is said to be the home of a miner who perished in an accident at the nearby colliery.

Bull

Location: Llyn Cowlyd - General area
Type: Fairy
Date / Time: Unknown
Further Comments: The waters are home to a large bull that breathes fire from its nose, though others say the creature is more 'Loch Ness Monster' in nature.

Wartime Bomber

Location: Llysfaen - Colwyn Bay area, skies over
Type: Haunting Manifestation
Date / Time: Early 1980s, 12 February 2016
Further Comments: A family on holiday in the area watched a Second World War bomber fly over the sea and vanish inland, diving behind a hill as if going to crash. They noticed there was no sound accompanying the aircraft. A similar, or the same, aircraft was observed by two witnesses some thirty years later.

Lady Margaret Blackbourne

Location: Marford - General area
Type: Haunting Manifestation

Further Comments: It is reported that some of the buildings in the village have cross-shaped windows to prevent the restless shade of Margaret, murdered by her husband George, from entering.

Victorian Man

Location: Marford - Trevor Arms public house
Type: Haunting Manifestation
Date / Time: Twenty-first century?
Further Comments: Several ghosts are said to haunt this establishment, including a Victorian man with mutton chops who spoke to a visitor, and Margaret Blackbourne (who also haunts other parts of the village).
