Further Comments: A local folk hero who constantly tricked the Devil, Jack was finally laid to rest under the churchyard wall to prevent Satan from taking his soul.


 
 


Playful Boy

Location: Llancaiach Fawr - Llancaiach Fawr Manor House
Type: Haunting Manifestation
Date / Time: 2000s
Further Comments: The presence of a young boy who fell to his death within the building is still felt, and has made his presence known by tugging on people's clothing. There are also reports of lurid, ghostly faces staring from the walls.


 
 


Dancing Fairies

Location: Llangua - Llangua church, fields behind
Type: Fairy
Date / Time: Unknown
Further Comments: Witnesses here watched a troop of fairies dancing in the fields behind the village church, before they all headed off towards the wood.


 
 


Misleading Old Woman

Location: Llanhilleth - Mountain in the region
Type: Haunting Manifestation
Date / Time: Unknown
Further Comments: This spooky old woman calls out to walkers, trying to lure them from the footpaths so they become lost. She can be recognised by her large four cornered hat and the large pot she carries.


 
 


White Woman

Location: Llanvihangel Crucorney - Between Llanvihangel Court and Lady Wood
Type: Haunting Manifestation
Date / Time: Unknown, but only at midnight
Further Comments: This pallid figure moves from the hall and disappears into the nearby wood. There have also been sightings of a short man dressed in green.


 
 


Monks

Location: Llanvihangel Crucorney - Llanthony Priory, in the Vale of Ewyas
Type: Haunting Manifestation
Date / Time: Unknown
Further Comments: This location is said to be haunted by the monks that once walked here. The Blaenavon Paranormal Investigation Team have reported recording EVP and observing a grey figure.


 
 


Swimming Stone

Location: Michaelstone-y-Fedw - The Druidstone, on the grounds of Druidstone House
Type: Legend
Date / Time: When a cock crows during the night
Further Comments: This stone, standing over three metres in height, goes for a swim in the nearby river if woken up at night.


 
 


Footfalls

Location: Mitchel Troy - Road towards the common
Type: Haunting Manifestation
Date / Time: Unknown, likely twentieth century
Further Comments: A married couple out walking late at night heard footsteps dragging behind them. When they stopped, the footsteps stopped. When a car approached them and illuminated the area, no other person could be seen.


 
 


Blue Woman

Location: Monmouth - Area around Hadnock
Type: Haunting Manifestation
Date / Time: Unknown
Further Comments: This area was said to be the haunt of a blue female form, although her history is unknown.


 
 


Bright Light

Location: Monmouth - Monnow Street
Type: Other
Date / Time: Unknown, likely early twentieth century
Further Comments: A man walking home in the early hours of the morning heard what sounded like a horse slowly following him. As the sounds drew alongside him, the man was blinded by bright lights which overtook him, vanishing into a nearby closed garage.


 
 


Horse

Location: Monmouth - Monnow Street, around Chippenham House area
Type: Haunting Manifestation
Date / Time: Unknown
Further Comments: The echoing sounds of a horse trotting have been heard, though the reasons why are not clear.


 
 


Small Woman

Location: Monmouth - Private residence (no longer standing), Granville Street
Type: Crisis Manifestation
Date / Time: Prior to death in the family
Further Comments: A phantom short woman who would appear next to people's beds with her head cocked would foretell a death in the family.


 
 


Fires

Location: Monmouth - Private residences, Brook Crescent
Type: Haunting Manifestation
Date / Time: Unknown, likely 1950s or early 1960s
Further Comments: Two properties here experienced items moving on their own accord, including lights bulbs which were removed from sockets and placed nearby. A couple of small fires broke out in one of the properties, after which the poltergeist appears to have departed.


 
 


Black Haired Figure

Location: Monmouth - Road toward England, close to 'leaving Wales' sign
Type: Haunting Manifestation
Date / Time: Late 2003, around 02:00h
Further Comments: The driver of a coach spotted a woman, dressed in black with long hair, on the hillside to the left who quickly descended and appeared to walk straight into the vehicle's path. The driver's colleague, sitting by the door, shouted that they had hit her - also convinced that they had, the driver stopped the coach. Very shaken, the pair disembarked, expecting to see a body. Nothing could be found. The driver later mentioned it to a friend, who said they had heard of a similar incident in the area.


 
 


Cloak and Legs

Location: Monmouth - Shire Hall Court
Type: Haunting Manifestation
Date / Time: 2006
Further Comments: A caretaker reported seeing a black cloak and the bottom of a pair of legs disappear behind a pillar - investigating further, he found no one in the area. Doors have also been said to close themselves, and the smell of perfume also fills the air. A visiting medium stated the building was haunted by a judge.


 
 


Half Owner

Location: Monmouth - Swift's Saw Mill (no longer standing)
Type: Haunting Manifestation
Date / Time: Unknown
Further Comments: Two brothers owned this mill - one brother placed his sibling in an asylum in order to have complete control of the site. The sibling died in the asylum and returned to haunt the mill, the ghost audibly chopping wood throughout the night.


 
 


Strange Man

Location: Monmouth - The Kymin
Type: Crisis Manifestation
Date / Time: Prior to a death of anyone who lives on the hill
Further Comments: A phantom man wearing either eighteenth or nineteenth century garb appears to announce the death of a local.


 
 


Leap or Push?

Location: Monmouth - Watery Lane
Type: Haunting Manifestation
Date / Time: 1948 (drowned man), 'postman' unknown
Further Comments: Though nothing exists of the stream that once ran through here, it has not deterred the appearance of a phantom man who drowned in its waters. It is not known whether he took is own life or was pushed. Another ghost was seen by a woman who thought that it was the postman. She tried to catch up to the figure, but seconds before reaching him, he vanished.


 
 


Carriage

Location: Monmouth - White Hill
Type: Haunting Manifestation
Date / Time: Unknown
Further Comments: A horse drawn coach has occasionally been spotted in this area.


 
 


Crying Baby

Location: Monmouth - White Hill
Type: Haunting Manifestation
Date / Time: Unknown
Further Comments: A baby was said to have been murdered on the hillside and the body hidden in a bush. The child's cries were reputed to echo round the area.


 
 


Blue Woman

Location: Monmouth - Wooded area near the river in Hadnock area
Type: Haunting Manifestation
Date / Time: Early twentieth century?
Further Comments: Two young people in a group of three out after midnight spotted a blue, hazy, faceless woman in a flowing dress. The figure glided along before vanishing like smoke.


 
 


Looks Like Stormy Weather

Location: Mynyddislwyn - St Tudor's Grave mound
Type: Legend
Date / Time: Unknown
Further Comments: When a man tried to find the hidden hoard of gold contained within the manmade mound, a huge storm blew up scaring the (would-be) thief away.


 
 


Juan White

Location: Nantyglo - Milfraen Mountain
Type: Haunting Manifestation
Date / Time: 18 July 2004
Further Comments: A local witch, Juan White is thought to now haunt this location. She was seen in 2004 by a couple of people who also heard the sound of galloping horses just prior to their sighting, though they could not see any of the creatures.


 
 


Evil People

Location: Newcastle - Former site of castle
Type: Haunting Manifestation
Date / Time: Unknown
Further Comments: This site of a former motte and bailey castle is said to be haunted by the spirits of all those who have committed evil deeds. The site was also home to a mighty oak tree in which fairies lived. When a storm damaged the tree, a fallen branch was used by locals as firewood, although those who burnt the wood had their homes set alight by the upset fairies.


 
 


Elf Meet

Location: Newcastle - Oak tree on former site of castle
Type: Fairy
Date / Time: Unknown
Further Comments: The oak tree was once believed to be a site where the little folk would congregate.
