Further Comments: In the moonlight, a postman on the roadside watched a phantom funeral procession move past, several of the mourners faces quite clear. A few days later, while passing the same spot, the postman watched the scene again, this time played out by flesh and blood mourners.

Woman with Auburn Hair

Location: Llandeilo - King's Head Hotel
Type: Haunting Manifestation
Date / Time: 1980s
Further Comments: This figure, seen frequenting the bar, is believed to be the shade of a lady who fell from a window at the hotel during the 1830s. She more often takes the form of a yellow patch of mist.


Location: Llandeilo - Newton House, Dinefwr Park
Type: Haunting Manifestation
Date / Time: Unknown
Further Comments: Newton House made it into the National Trust's top ten haunted locations in 2007. Lady Elinor Cavendish was murdered in the eighteenth century, strangled by a lover. Some visitors have reported invisible hands squeezing their throats, while others have seen a young girl vanishing into a cupboard.

Church Dragon

Location: Llandeilo Graban - Llandelio Graban church

Further Comments: This dragon, which made its home in the church tower, was killed by a local lad. The boy made a dummy dragon out of oak and covered it in steel spikes - the real dragon attacked the model, impaling itself on the spikes and dying of its injuries.

Corpse Candles

Location: Llandilo - Golden Grove

Further Comments: Three of these spectral lights were seen hovering and dancing over a part of the river here - a day later three men drowned in the same spot.

Wellington Bomber

Location: Llandovery - Towy Valley, between Llandovery & Llandeilo
Type: Haunting Manifestation

Further Comments: A training zone for World War 2 crews, one assumes this phantom belongs to a group that didn't make the grade.


Location: Llandysul - Ffynnon Feirad

Further Comments: This valley is home to a ghostly parson.


Location: Llandysul - River Teifi

Further Comments: The sound of a harp that can be heard at the stretch of the river known as 'Pool of the Harper' is thought to belong to a performer who drowned there. The banks of the river, which stretches for some 75 miles, are said to be home to a couple of phantom women. A woman in green wearing emeralds is said to protect a hidden treasure (details of which are sadly lacking), while a woman dressed from head to toe in black drifts around looking for something (or someone).

Further Comments: A ghost tour event at the hotel featured in national newspapers after it was alleged that host psychic medium Chris Date had concealed a man in the loft to create knocking sounds to simulate spiritual contact. Chris Date denied knowing that the man was hidden there.

Celtic Presence

Location: Llanelli - Parc Howard (formerly known as Bryncaerau Castle)
Type: Haunting Manifestation

Further Comments: The ghost that haunts this building is said to be connected to the Celtic Mound that it was constructed on, and is reputed to manifest in the room above the main entrance. Tapping that is sometimes heard in the house is blamed on the ghost of a man who hid up the chimney many years ago - trying to meet his maid lover, the surprise return of the mistress of the house forced him up the flue where he became confused and lost, and some believe he is still there.

Flying Bowls

Location: Llanelli - Thomas Arms restaurant and hotel
Type: Poltergeist
Date / Time: July 2014
Further Comments: Hotel owners Christine and David Evans claimed in the local press that they had experienced strange sounds and had bowls which had flown off surfaces. Websites carried footage of something moving around on CCTV, although looking more like something small and close to the lens rather than paranormal in origin.

Corpse Candles

Location: Llangathen - Aberglasney House & Gardens
Type: Crisis Manifestation
Date / Time: 1630s onwards
Further Comments: After the accidental deaths of five maids in the mid seventeenth century, corpse candles have marked death and ill fortune ever since, appearing before each tragedy. Thomas Phillips, an owner between 1800's - 1820's, also haunts the grounds, as does another girl who was seen in the basement of the house.

Huw Pugh

Location: Llangrannog - Beach
Type: Haunting Manifestation
Date / Time: Late twentieth century
Further Comments: Dressed in his old fashioned sailors' suit, Huw Pugh has been observed several times over the years standing along the coastline.

Carreg Bica

Location: Llangrannog - Ordovician rocks on the beach
Type: Legend
Date / Time: Rock still present
Further Comments: After suffering from toothache, the giant Bica spat his tooth out and it landed on the beach, where it still stands today.

Candle Extinguisher

Location: Llanstephan - Llanstephan Castle - tunnels under
Type: Haunting Manifestation
Date / Time: Pre twentieth century
Further Comments: Each time a particular secret tunnel was investigated, which led from the castle to a nearby mansion house, a ghostly wind sprung up and extinguished the candle light at the exact same place each time.

Funeral Possession

Location: Milford Haven - Church
Type: Crisis Manifestation
Date / Time: Nineteenth century
Further Comments: A family living nearby watched a funeral occurring in the church opposite their house, though when they went to talk to the vicar whom they knew, the scene vanished. A few days later, a neighbour died and the funeral occurred in the same manner that they had observed.

Long Snake

Location: Milford Haven - Off coast, viable from the Shipwright public house
Type: Cryptozoology
Date / Time: 06 March 2003
Further Comments: A small group at the pub watched a snake-like creature, between 10 - 15 metres in length, a short distance off the shoreline.


Location: Milford Haven - Skies over the area

Date / Time: 02 February 2012, around 22:00h
Further Comments: Three residents of Milford Haven complained to the local council about a booming noise heard in the area which lasted two minutes, a sound no witness had ever experienced before. One theory stated that the sound came from night time exercises from the nearby Castlemartin Range, although the MoD stated that they were not using anything which could have caused the noise.

Cowled Woman

Location: Monkton - Old Hall
Type: Haunting Manifestation
Date / Time: 1930s
Further Comments: A vicar's daughter witnessed a ghostly lady leaning out of a window waving at her. The vicar himself was woken in successive nights by loud banging on his door.

Lady of the Lake

Location: Myddfai - Nearby Lake (Llyn y fan Fach?)
Type: Fairy
Date / Time: Unknown
Further Comments: A young man wed a fairy girl who came from this lake. While married their farm grew wealthy, but after the man struck his wife a third time, she vanished back into the lake, and his farm fell barren (although their three sons became famous doctors).

Running Man

Location: Nant Y Caws - A48, between Cross Hands and Carmarthen
Type: Haunting Manifestation
Date / Time: 2010, late autumn, around 01:30, and January 2016
Further Comments: In 2010, a car driver was forced to break hard when travelling along this road as a man ran out in front of their vehicle. About half way across the road, the figure vanished. A similar encounter occurred in 2016 when a witness watched a dark figure who vanished while crossing the road.

Bleeding Yew

Location: Nevern - Yew Tree in churchyard
Type: Legend
Date / Time: Still present
Further Comments: The second yew tree on the right on entering the churchyard is known as the Bleeding Tree - blood can be seen dripping from the stump left by a severed branch.

Forty Foot Creature

Location: New Quay - Off coast
Type: Cryptozoology
Date / Time: 1960s?
Further Comments: This sea serpent reportedly took a liking to the local seal population, though the penniped's objected to the new arrival and their fleeing was an indication the creature was near.

Impenetrable Dragon

Location: Newcastle Emlyn - Ruined castle in the area (may no longer be standing)
Type: Dragon
Date / Time: Unknown
Further Comments: A dragon whose armoured scales rendered it virtually invincible was killed by a soldier who managed to shoot the creature in its one weak spot - up the bottom. When the dragon's body hit the nearby river venom gushed out, killing all fish.

Phantom Faces

Location: Pembrey - Pembrey Country Park, coastline near the area
Type: Haunting Manifestation
Date / Time: Twentieth century
Further Comments: As well as the occasional ghost ship reported off the coast, the area is reportedly haunted by the ghosts of those killed by wreakers in the seventeenth century.
