Multi-eyed Cockatrice

Location: Castle Gwys - Exact area not known
Type: Dragon
Date / Time: Unknown
Further Comments: The body of this cockatrice was covered with eyes, and it was said that the estates of Winston belonged to anyone who could see the creature before it could see them. One man managed to win the lands by hiding in a barrel which rolled into the monster's lair.


 
Teenager

Location: Castlemartin - Off the coast in the area
Type: Cryptozoology
Date / Time: Circa 1782
Further Comments: Henry Reynolds spotted a merman off the coast which he initially believed to be a pale skinned teenager before noticing its brown tail which waved about. While the body and arms looked human, the arms and hands looked too short and thick, while the creature's nose was long and sharp. Reynolds went to find other witnesses, but by the time he returned, the merman had gone.


 
Dancing Sheppard

Location: Crymch - Freni-Fawr mountain
Type: Fairy
Date / Time: Unknown
Further Comments: A youth tending to his sheep was convinced to dance by a small group of fairies - when he did, he was transported to fairyland, but returned to the mountain once he stopped his jig.


 
Cheated Devil

Location: Devil's Bridge - Lowest of the three bridges
Type: Legend - Old Nick
Date / Time: Unknown
Further Comments: This bridge was built by Old Nick by the request of an old woman who needed to cross the water to reach her livestock. In return for his work, the Devil demanded the soul of the first living creature to walk over it. The old woman was not prepared to lose her own soul, and sent her dog over the bridge first; the Devil left angry and empty handed.


 
Lost Village

Location: Ferryside - Estuary
Type: Legend
Date / Time: Unknown
Further Comments: An ancient village is submerged under these waters, and sometimes the toiling of the old church bell can be heard from within the estuary.


 
Bluebells

Location: Fishguard - Wintern Day Centre
Type: Poltergeist
Date / Time: Circa May 2010
Further Comments: The Sun newspaper reported that staff at this site refused to work after dark, having experienced poltergeist activity such as unplugged printers printing and furniture moving. The smell of bluebells was also reported. One story said that two maids had committed suicide in the attic during spring, at the time local bluebells bloomed...


 
Laughing Children

Location: Garnant - Trecynllatch Farm, Llandeilo Road
Type: Haunting Manifestation
Date / Time: 2000s
Further Comments: The Carmarthen Journal reported that Leyigh and Anthony Vobe, owners of the farm, had encountered figures walking up and down the stairs, and had heard children laughing and people talking when no one else was around. It is believed the criminals were once hanged in the area.


 
Black Panther

Location: Haverfordwest - Road just outside the town
Type: ABC
Date / Time: March 2005
Further Comments: Witness Dixie Tilley was cycling near the town when he saw what looked like a black panther. Dixie said the creature disappeared under a fence when he cycled within thirty metres of its location.


 
Man in Breeches

Location: Haverfordwest - Road near Picton Castle
Type: Haunting Manifestation
Date / Time: Circa 1904
Further Comments: Brigadier-General Harris and three other people spotted a man with a cocked hat and wearing breeches approaching them along a road. They stood to one side to let the figure pass, but he vanished. The fifth member of the Brigadier's party did not perceive the figure.


 
Furniture Mover

Location: Haverfordwest - Unnamed house in RAF Brawdy
Type: Poltergeist
Date / Time: Twentieth century
Further Comments: A family living in a semidetached house were kept awake for several nights by loud knocks coming from their neighbour's home. One night the sounds were incredibly loud, so the following morning they went next door to complain, only to find their neighbour now arriving home after spending the evening away. Upon investigation, it was discovered that all the furnishings in the house were moved around, though no money or credit cards were stolen. The RAF took the case so seriously they called in a bomb squad to ensure that an explosive device hadn't been planted by the mysterious intruder.


 
Gwenllian

Location: Kidwelly - Area surrounding the castle
Type: Haunting Manifestation
Date / Time: Unknown
Further Comments: The female warrior Gwenllian lost her head in battle against the Norman at the site, and her headed ghost rode the area for many years afterwards. The haunting stopped when her head and body were located and buried together, though more recently there have been reports of a medieval soldier...


 
Waiting for Wil

Location: Kidwelly - Pistyll Teilo
Type: Haunting Manifestation
Date / Time: Unknown
Further Comments: A female spirit haunts this area. According to Antony D Hippisley Coxe's Haunted Britain, she cries out 'It is long and cold and tiresome to wait for the descendants of Wil Watter'. The waters of the well is also said to have healing powers.


 
Bed Rocking

Location: Lampeter - Private residence, High Street
Type: Poltergeist
Date / Time: February 1905
Further Comments: A bed would rock quite violently, knocking against the wall and creating sounds which could be heard throughout the building. The event would occur each day, at seven o'clock in both the morning and evening.


 
White Figure

Location: Lamphey - Bishop's Palace ruins
Type: Haunting Manifestation
Date / Time: Nineteenth century
Further Comments: This ghostly white figure was thought to be a member of the Devereux family, one of whom spent several years at the palace.


 
Water Nymph

Location: Laugharne - Laugharne Park, close to the estuary
Type: Fairy
Date / Time: 22 November 2009, midnight
Further Comments: While on holiday, one lady observed a pale skinned, red headed woman moving across the park, although the way the entity's green and blue clothing flowed, appeared to be moving through water. The woman smiled before vanishing.


 
Mrs Thomas

Location: Laugharne - The Boathouse
Type: Haunting Manifestation
Date / Time: 1958 onwards
Further Comments: The former home of poet Dylan Thomas, his mother's ghost is said to haunt the house, moving furniture and turning lights on and off. However, some are sure that it is Dylan himself, and he is also said to walk the lanes in the area.


 
Push

Location: Laugharne - Laugharne Castle
Type: Haunting Manifestation
Date / Time: September 2006
Further Comments: A visitor to the castle reported being pushed as she climbed the stairs, and also on the way back down.


 
Black Hound

Location: Laugharne - Area around Pant-y-Madog
Type: Shuck
Date / Time: Unknown
Further Comments: Fortunately for any witnesses, this member of the Cwn Annwn is reported to be harmless as it runs between castle and town.


 
Wolverine

Location: Letterston - Farm in the area
Type: Cryptozoology
Date / Time: September 1992
Further Comments: A farmer in this area twice reported seeing a wolverine on his land, blaming the creature for killing two lambs.


 
Old Lady

Location: Little Haven - Manor
Type: Haunting Manifestation
Date / Time: 1960s
Further Comments: A phantom woman would be seen walking through the hall, although her appearances ceased after a window was added along a corridor.


 
White Lady

Location: Little Haven - Castle Hotel
Type: Haunting Manifestation
Date / Time: Unknown
Further Comments: This spook is reportedly a woman whose body was found on the nearby beach. A long dead cat is also reported to play on the beds at night, while a man in 'modern' dress is said to slowly materialise from the feet up.


 
Pirates

Location: Llanafan - Craig-yr-Ogof
Type: Haunting Manifestation
Date / Time: Unknown
Further Comments: After concealing a hoard of gold and other treasures, these ghostly pirates still protect their stolen wealth.


 
Footprints

Location: Llanarth - Llanarth church
Type: Legend - Old Nick
Date / Time: Unknown (footsteps still present?)
Further Comments: Up to his nightly no-good antics, the Devil entered this church, scaled the tower and tried to steal the bells. The vicar witnessed this and managed to drive the Devil away - the Horned One jumped from the bell tower, leaving an impression of his foot on a stone in the graveyard.


 
Breaking Glass

Location: Llanarthney - Emlyn Arms public house
Type: Poltergeist
Date / Time: Circa 1910
Further Comments: A poltergeist is reported to have caused much distress and damage in this pub over several days, including throwing hot stones around and creating disembodied footsteps


 
Woman with Auburn Hair

Location: Llandeilo - King's Head Hotel
Type: Haunting Manifestation
Date / Time: 1980s
Further Comments: This figure, seen frequenting the bar, is believed to be the shade of a lady who fell from a window at the hotel during the 1830s. She more often takes the form of a yellow patch of mist.
