Fairy Fair

Further Comments: Fairies were once believed to hold annual fairs on the hills, singing and dancing throughout the night.


Phantom Fair

Location: Blackdown Hills - Blagdon Hill
Type: Environmental Manifestation
Date / Time: 1600s
Further Comments: A man riding through the hills saw a fair from the distance, though it faded from view as he approached. As he passed through the area, it is reported he 'felt' the event happening around him.


Defrocked Charlie

Location: Blagdon - Holman Clavel Inn
Type: Haunting Manifestation
Date / Time: Twentieth century
Further Comments: This spook is thought to be a monk who fell from grace. He has been spotted in one of the bedrooms, and is blamed whenever items go missing, only to return a few days or weeks later.


Headless Coachman

Location: Bossington - Roads in the area
Type: Haunting Manifestation
Date / Time: Late nineteenth century
Further Comments: A witness is said to have encountered a phantom coach and horses, driven by a headless coachman. The entity vanished just after passing the viewer.


Screaming Woman

Location: Box Hill - The Box Tunnel, eastern end
Type: Haunting Manifestation
Date / Time: February 2011
Further Comments: Four men working in an ultrasonics gang all heard a female moaning at the mouth of the east exit. As the noise grew louder, they though it a joke, until one man shone his torch up the hill and the party spotted a woman in a nightdress looking down at them - she vanished before their eyes. When they reported the sighting, they were told that the figure had been seen previously by a group of six men.


Jack White

Location: Bratton Seymour - Jack White's Gibbet (junction along the A371, Bratton Seymour and Holton)

Further Comments: Jack was a murdered who was left in a gibbet to starve to death. His ghost is said to wander the site of his crime and punishment.


The Naked Boy

Location: Brendon - Brendon Hills
Type: Legend
Date / Time: Unknown
Further Comments: This large boulder, an alcoholic turned to stone, sometimes animates on nights of the full moon, and travels to the nearby river to drink.



Location: Bridgwater - A39 between Street and Bridgwater
Type: Haunting Manifestation
Date / Time: Unknown
Further Comments: Pocock was a highwayman who was badly injured in a fight but managed to escape, only to die of his wounds in a secret cave which has never been discovered. His ghost has been seen on horseback, curiously galloping on the spot, and has been blamed for several accidents in the area.


Duke of Monmouth

Location: Bridgwater - Castle ruins
Type: Haunting Manifestation

Further Comments: The Duke of Monmouth is said to have stayed at the castle just prior to the battle of Sedgemoor, his phantom possibly remaining in regret of defeat.


Judge Jeffreys

Location: Bridgwater - Marycourt, St Mary Street
Type: Haunting Manifestation
Date / Time: Unknown
Further Comments: Jeffreys is still said to walk around his former lodgings, rapping on doors as he passes.


Life Taker

Location: Bridgwater - River Parrett
Type: Haunting Manifestation
Date / Time: Unknown
Further Comments: This water spirit, thought to be the ghost of a suicide, is reported to take a life each year.


Tall Soldier

Location: Bridgwater - Road from Bridgwater to Stogursey
Type: Haunting Manifestation
Date / Time: Unknown
Further Comments: Wearing a red jacket, this tall soldier still stands around the area where he is thought to have been hanged.



Location: Bridgwater - Road from Bridgwater to Weston Zoyland
Type: Haunting Manifestation
Date / Time: 06 July (reoccurring)
Further Comments: As the Duke of Monmouth retreated after their defeat, his troops sang hymns to try to boost their morale. Their song can still be heard.



Location: Bridgwater - Rose and Crown public house
Type: Haunting Manifestation
Date / Time: Twenty first century
Further Comments: Unexplained footsteps are often heard all over the pub, even after closing hours when all occupiers are accounted for.


Murdered Girl

Location: Bristol - 14 Bellevue
Type: Haunting Manifestation
Date / Time: 1960s
Further Comments: A family living here reported the strange sounds of scratching at the window. The kitchen table would also creak and groan without reason.



Location: Bristol - 157 Air Balloon Road, St George
Type: Haunting Manifestation
Date / Time: Circa 1998
Further Comments: After builders working in the building heard footsteps coming from an empty room, the family living here called in a medium. The occupants were told that the house had four ghosts, including a teenage boy and a woman in a black dress.


Old Lady

Location: Bristol - 9 St James Parade
Type: Haunting Manifestation
Date / Time: 1940s
Further Comments: The great ghost hunter Elliott O'Donnell was called on to investigate this case. The Brittons family living here reported hearing strange taps and footsteps, while Mrs Britton fainted after seeing the face of an old lady moving towards the cot of her child. The haunting is said to have stopped when the family were re-housed.


Woman in White

Location: Bristol - A38 near Barrow Gurney Reservoir
Type: Haunting Manifestation
Date / Time: Unknown
Further Comments: A certain part of the road is said to be covered in skid marks where various cars have had to brake to avoid hitting a phantom woman dressed in a white coat. The figure always vanishes immediately afterwards.



Location: Bristol - A38, Bedminster Down
Type: Unknown Ghost Type
Date / Time: December 2012, 06:50h
Further Comments: Whilst driving to work this witness spotted a smiling woman in a red top and black jogging bottoms running towards them in the middle of the road. After they passed each other the woman could not be seen in the rear view mirrors.


Black Monk

Location: Bristol - All Saint's Church
Type: Haunting Manifestation
Date / Time: Last seen 1948?
Further Comments: Many believe that this ghostly monk in black has returned to watch over a pile of treasure which was hidden during his lifetime. The figure has been spotted several times over the last two hundred years, most recently around Christmas 1948 when he was seen walking down the church aisle.



Location: Bristol - Area around Duchess Lake (now filled in) and Dower House
Type: Haunting Manifestation
Date / Time: December (reoccurring) - exact date not known
Further Comments: Duchess Elizabeth Somerset fell from her horse and broke her neck - her ghost is said to ride around the area. A local legend says that if you wait near her monument, three knocks will signify her presence.


Crying Girl

Location: Bristol - Arnos Court - graveyard
Type: Haunting Manifestation
Date / Time: Unknown
Further Comments: A woman in black has been seen here, crying over the death of her husband who was taken during World War One. Another woman has been observed staggering around screaming; it is believed she was accidentally buried alive, and the mistake not realised until the body was exhumed many years later.


Pregnant Nun

Location: Bristol - Arno's Manor Hotel, Room 160 and other areas
Type: Haunting Manifestation
Date / Time: 1977
Further Comments: This nun took her own life and, for varying reasons, her sisters bricked her body up in an alcove. The haunting is said to have started during WWII, when workmen came across her skeleton and to avoid any delay to their work, just hid the bones elsewhere. Since then, a figure in brown has periodically been reported, and some people have heard a soft female voice calling them by name.


Decapitated Horseman

Location: Bristol - Ashton Court Estate
Type: Haunting Manifestation
Date / Time: Weather Dependent: Clear moonlit nights (horseman)
Further Comments: Ashton Court is best known for its ghostly headless horseman, though there are also reports of grey ladies and a phantom hound.


Goram and Vincent

Location: Bristol - Avon Gorge
Type: Legend
Date / Time: Unknown
Further Comments: To prove themselves worthy of the lady Avona's love, the giant brothers Goram and Vincent raced to dig a ditch in order to drain a lake. Goram started work but fell asleep after digging the Hazel Brook Gorge, while Vincent dug the Avon Gorge that drained the unwanted lake, thus winning Avona's heart.
