Further Comments: Some parts of the town were covered in thousands of jellyfish that apparently fell from the sky.


 
 


Bladud

Further Comments: The city of Bath is said to have been constructed around waters that cured Prince Bladud of leprosy and his pigs of skin complaints.


 
 


White Haired Man

Location: Bath - Gravel Walk, Victoria Park
Type: Haunting Manifestation
Date / Time: Sightings said to have been around 20:45h, several in 1976
Further Comments: This white haired man has appeared several times, only to suddenly vanish.


 
 


Misty Lady

Location: Bath - Grosvenor Hotel
Type: Haunting Manifestation
Date / Time: Unknown
Further Comments: The appearance of this female phantom is accompanied by a sharp drop in temperature. Footfalls are also reported.


 
 


Moaning

Location: Bath - High medieval wall near Theatre Royal

Further Comments: A local myth states that the long drop on the other side of this wall is where plague-infected bodies were thrown - the upset spirits are still heard complaining about their treatment.


 
 


Horses

Location: Bath - Laura Place and connecting streets

Further Comments: The sound (never the sight) of horses and drawn carriages is said to linger here.


 
 


Juliana

Location: Bath - Popjoy's Restaurant (Beau Nash House)

Date / Time: Late twentieth century?
Further Comments: Beau Nash's mistress Juliana is reported to haunt this restaurant, as is another ghostly woman wearing clothing from the 1960s. They say the latter figure looks perfectly solid until she vanishes...


 
 


Julia

Further Comments: Dressed in her wedding dress, Julia walks around this area. It is possible she searches for the man who jilted her at the alter.


 
 


Eloping Elizabeth

Location: Bath - Royal Crescent
Type: Haunting Manifestation

Further Comments: The phantom coach and horses reputed to haunt this area contain Elizabeth Linley and Richard Brinsley Sheridan as they elope time after time.


 
 


Flying Glasses

Location: Bath - Salamander public house, John Street
Type: Poltergeist
Date / Time: 2000s
Further Comments: As per polt normal, this spirit is said to throw glasses around, create disembodied footfalls, and generate cold spots.


 
 


Old Fashioned Lady

Location: Bath - Second floor flat at Grosvenor Place
Type: Unknown Ghost Type
Date / Time: Twentieth century
Further Comments: Seen by a husband and wife couple, this monochromic figure silently drifted through their living room, terrifying the pet cat. More recently, she has been observed on the staircase.


 
 


Playing Ball

Location: Bath - Stone Lions at entrance to Royal Victoria Park
Type: Legend
Date / Time: When the clock strikes thirteen
Further Comments: Two lions stand on the gate posts here, each cat with a paw on a ball. Locals say when the clock strikes thirteen, the lions kick the balls at each other.


 
 


Grey Lady

Location: Bath - Theatre Royal & Garrick's Head Hotel
Type: Haunting Manifestation
Date / Time: Butterfly seen 25 December (reoccurring), Grey Lady last seen 1975
Further Comments: An actress from the 1880's, this lady killed herself in the hotel when she discovered her husband had murdered her secret lover. Her last performance at the theatre was the night of her death, and there she wore a grey feather dress - the same clothing she still wears. A butterfly is also reported to haunt the theatre, manifesting briefly once a year.


 
 


Old Servant

Location: Bath - York Villa

Further Comments: This faithful servant now refuses to leave the house, suffering guilt for allowing two children to starve to death. One of the children is said to still be around, as is his mother who manifests as a Grey Lady.


 
 


Battle of Mount Badon

Location: Bathampton - Bathampton Down
Type: Legend
Date / Time: Unknown
Further Comments: The down has been suggested as the site where Arthur engaged and defeated the Saxons.


 
 


Jean Baptiste du Barre

Location: Bathampton - The George Inn
Type: Haunting Manifestation
Date / Time: Twentieth century, said to be more frequent in December
Further Comments: A Frenchman killed in a duel, du Barre reportedly took his last breaths in the inn. A spirit resembling him was seen standing by the bar at the end of the twentieth century; the witness said the entity was friendly and unthreatening.


 
 


Purple Woman

Location: Batheaston - The Grey House (private residence)
Type: Haunting Manifestation
Date / Time: Twentieth century
Further Comments: A former owner of the house, this old lady in a purple dress would make herself known to gardeners - an occupation she preferred to handle herself.


 
 


Hidden Daughter

Location: Bathford - Browne's Folly (aka Brown's Folly)
Type: Legend
Date / Time: Unknown
Further Comments: A local legend says that Browne built this folly after he was told his daughter would die on a given date. He placed his daughter in the room at the top of the building in an attempt to outwit fate, by she was bitten by a snake and died.


 
 


Mistletoe Bride

Location: Bawdrip - Rectory
Type: Haunting Manifestation
Date / Time: 1940s
Further Comments: A grey lady that walks on the grass in front of the rectory is said to be the mistletoe bride (the nearby Knowle Hall one of several places in the UK that claims the legend as its own). Poltergeist activity has also been reported in the rectory in the past.


 
 


Cursing Well

Location: Bishops Lydeard - The Devil's Whispering Well (close to Bell Inn)

Further Comments: This perverted wishing well is traditionally used to harm others.


 
 


Fairy Fair

Location: Black Down Hills - General area
Type: Fairy
Date / Time: Seventeenth century?
Further Comments: Fairies were once believed to hold annual fairs on the hills, singing and dancing throughout the night.


 
 


Phantom Fair

Location: Blackdown Hills - Blagdon Hill
Type: Environmental Manifestation
Date / Time: 1600's
Further Comments: A man riding through the hills saw a fair from the distance, though it faded from view as he approached. As he passed through the area, it is reported he 'felt' the event happening around him.


 
 


Defrocked Charlie

Location: Blagdon - Holman Clavel Inn
Type: Haunting Manifestation
Date / Time: Twentieth century
Further Comments: This spook is thought to be a monk who fell from grace. He has been spotted in one of the bedrooms, and is blamed whenever items go missing, only to return a few days or weeks later.


 
 


Headless Coachman

Location: Bossington - Roads in the area
Type: Haunting Manifestation
Date / Time: Late nineteenth century
Further Comments: A witness is said to have encountered a phantom coach and horses, driven by a headless coachman. The entity vanished just after passing the viewer.


 
 


Jack White

Location: Bratton Seymour - Jack White's Gibbet (junction along the A371, Bratton Seymour and Holton)
Type: Haunting Manifestation
Date / Time: Unknown
Further Comments: Jack was a murdered who was left in a gibbet to starve to death. His ghost is said to wander the site of his crime and punishment.
