The Black Lady

Further Comments: The sight of the phantom woman in black clothing who haunts this area is said to have unnerved many a person, and it is said some locals still avoid the area at night (just to be safe).

Woman in White

Location: Bridgnorth - White Lion Inn

Further Comments: This phantom woman in a long white dress is reputed to manifest when there is a pending death (although relating to what or whom is unclear).

Black Dog

Location: Broomfield - General area
Type: Shuck

Further Comments: A gentleman who committed suicide in the village is said to have returned in the form of a large black dog.

Talking Faces

Location: Broseley - Private residence

Date / Time: 1986, 1988
Further Comments: One person at this property watched two faces which spoke appear in a wall .Others reported seeing a servant girl manifest on the end of a bed. A couple of years later, witnesses outside spotted a man standing by a window, although the property was empty. Disembodied footsteps were also reported.

Woman with a Candle

Location: Broseley - Ruined churchyard

Date / Time: Twentieth century
Further Comments: This white figure, seen wearing a poke bonnet and carrying a candle, appeared in front of three witnesses before quickly disappearing. A photographer claims to have captured her on film, though this author has yet to see the image.

Black Monk

Location: Buildwas - Buildwas Power Station (aka Ironbridge Power Station)

Date / Time: 2000s?
Further Comments: Built partly on the site of a ruined abbey, several workers at the power station have reported seeing a ghostly black monk walking around the modern building. One employee also reported seeing a phantom woman floating in his path who vanished before his eyes. Both audio and visual paranormal experiences have been reported by local residents from Leighton village. (Image 2006 Lawson Clout)

Bottled Ghost

Location: Burleydam - Combermere public house

Further Comments: A local legend says that a ghost was bottled and buried under the steps of this pub by two clergymen. When the steps were replaced hundreds of years later, no bottle was found.

R101 Airman

Location: Cardington - Cardington Hangars

Further Comments: The old airship sheds from which the R101 departed, are reputed to be haunted by at least one airman from the ill-fated airship which crashed in France.

Bleeding Builder

Location: Cardington - Plaish Hall
Type: Haunting Manifestation

Further Comments: After Judge Leighton sentenced a builder to die, the judge agreed to lessen the punishment if the man helped build a new chimney stack on Leighton's roof. The builder agreed, but after the work was complete the judge hanged the man from the chimney before entombing the corpse within it. The chimney occasionally drips blood, and the ghost of the builder (sometimes accompanied by an unknown woman) is still said to walk the hall. Another legend attached to the site says a group of clergymen met one night to play cards. The devil appeared, and all but one man ran away - his friends later found a man-sized blood stain on the floor that could never be washed away.

Further Comments: The ghost of a Royalist on horseback is said to ride silently around the lanes leading to this village.

Madam Pigott

Location: Chetwynd Aston - A41, and Chetwynd Hall & surrounding area
Type: Haunting Manifestation

Further Comments: Having died in childbirth, Madam Pigott was seen dozens of times carrying her baby and combing its hair. Some also reported the lady also having a cat with her. She was eventually exorcised by twelve parsons, though in 1969 two motorists separately reported a white figure on the road near the church.

Further Comments: This mermaid was so upset at the way she was treated by onlookers, she drove to the bottom of the pool and never returned. It was thought that she guarded a mass of treasure.

Further Comments: Those who walk twelve times around the church at midnight on this date shall hear the names of the villagers due to die within the following twelve months.

Major Smalman

Location: Church Stretton - Area around Wilderhope Manor
Type: Haunting Manifestation
Date / Time: 1965
Further Comments: A diehard Royalist, Smalman's home was once besieged by Roundheads during the latter stages of the Civil War. The Major managed to escape on horseback, his ghost now seen galloping away from the building. The manor itself is also reported to be haunted by both Smalman and the shade of a young girl who smiles at any witnesses before screaming horribly.

Wooden Legged Man

Location: Church Stretton - Bottle and Glass Inn

Further Comments: The sounds of a man with a wooden leg has been heard walking around this public house.

Falling Down

Location: Church Stretton - Halzer Hill
Type: Haunting Manifestation
Date / Time: Unknown
Further Comments: The screams of a young girl haunt an old copper mine, where she fell to her death down an open shaft.

Wild Edric

Location: Church Stretton - Hills around the town
Type: Shuck
Date / Time: Unknown
Further Comments: The large hound with eyes that glow red like hot coals is said to be a manifestation of Wild Edric, local hero and protector of Britain.

Black Dog

Location: Clee Hill - Kremlin Inn

Further Comments: The outside of this public house is said to be haunted by a ghostly black dog. The inn took the name 'Kremlin' after people reported hearing Russian voices and music emerge from the jukebox during the Cold War.


Location: Cleobury Mortimer - Talbot Hotel

Further Comments: Mary is said to haunt the inn; her presence often accompanied by blasts of cold air. A tunnel running between here and a nearby church is also reputedly haunted, this time by a group of ghostly parishioners attempting to escape religious persecution.

Bloody Handprint

Location: Condover - Condover Hall
Type: Curse
Date / Time: Sixteenth century onwards
Further Comments: Knyvett, lord of the manor, was murdered by his son even though the finger of blame was pointed at the butler. Just before being hanged, the manservant cursed the descendants of Knyvett's family, vowing that they would not prosper while living in the hall. Knyvett's bloody handprint, left on a wall where he fell, could not be washed away so the stone was chipped away. More recently, the sound of footsteps and doors closing have been at night, and a couple dressed in Victorian clothing spotted.

Corbet Kynaston

Location: Coton - Coton Hall
Type: Haunting Manifestation
Date / Time: 1788
Further Comments: Kynaston's ghost became too much for the locals to bear, so they called upon the services of six ministers to banish the spirit. After a long round of praying and candle burning, the holy men convinced Kynaston to enter a glass bottle which they quickly sealed and threw into a nearby pool.

Giant's Droppings

Location: Cressage - The Wrekin
Type: Legend

Further Comments: Angry at the town of Shrewsbury, a giant gathered together a mound of earth and set off to dam up the River Severn. After the giant became lost, he approached a man heading home towards the town. The local lied and managed to convince the dim-witted villain it would take months to reach the town. The giant sighed and dumped the earth where he stood, forming the Wrekin.

Further Comments: Wearing a long coat and untanned leather trousers, Humphrey is said to appear quite friendly. He is said to also walk up and down the corridors, heard outside the bedrooms.

Fighting Monks

Location: Easthope - St Peter's churchyard
Type: Haunting Manifestation
Date / Time: Unknown
Further Comments: The sounds of two monks fighting can be heard in the churchyard, even though both men died as they fell down the stone staircase to the cellar.


Location: Ellesmere - Colemere (aka Cole Mere, aka Crose Mere, aka Crosmere) lake

Date / Time: 21 May (reoccurring)
Further Comments: Sunken bells on a long forgotten chapel can still be heard ringing from the mere. One version of the story says they ring to mock Oliver Cromwell, who pulled down the church, while another version say they ring on St Helen's day, the patron saint of the chapel.
