Highwayman

Location: Moulton St. Mary (Norfolk) - Callow (or Caller) Pit
Type: Haunting Manifestation
Date / Time: Unknown
Further Comments: A phantom highwayman would ride around this pit before heading towards Callow Spong (where he would vanish). The pit itself was said to be the home of the Devil, who dragged one man down into its waters after he tried to fish out a chest of coins.


 
 


Giant's Gold

Location: Murroe (County Limerick) - Garranbane, aka Giant's Grave
Type: Legend

Further Comments: One myth says that alongside the giant's body is a golden hoard. The last time anyone tried to dig it up, a phantom bull could be heard, scaring the diggers away.


 
 


Looks Like Stormy Weather

Location: Mynyddislwyn (Gwent) - St Tudor's Grave mound
Type: Legend
Date / Time: Unknown
Further Comments: When a man tried to find the hidden hoard of gold contained within the manmade mound, a huge storm blew up scaring the (would-be) thief away.


 
 


Guiding Light

Location: Nannerch (Clwyd) - Moel Arthur Hill
Type: Legend
Date / Time: Unknown
Further Comments: An unearthly ball of light is said to periodically appear on the hill to lead treasure hunters to a mass of treasure buried somewhere here. However, once the digging site is reached, a violent storm will spring up and drive the would-be raiders away. The hill is another contender for the final resting place of Boudicca.


 
 


Blind Peter

Location: Netley (Hampshire) - Netley Abbey ruins
Type: Haunting Manifestation
Date / Time: 31 October (reoccurring) Grey Ladies seen
Further Comments: On Halloween three misty women appear and walk along the ruins walls. The sounds of bells can also be heard on this night. Another presence, Blind Peter, is less choosey on the date on which he appears, and wanders around the ruins of the abbey. There is a legend that a secret underground passage was sealed after the last man to enter it emerged shortly after, screaming 'block it up!' before dropping dead - the passage may be connected to the tales of treasure buried on site.


 
 


Old Lady in a Black Dress

Location: Norwich (Norfolk) - Norwich Castle
Type: Haunting Manifestation
Date / Time: 1820 onwards
Further Comments: The first ghost sighting here dates back to 1820 when several prisoners were scared 'half to death' by something indescribable. More recently, staff at the castle museum have reported watching an old lady float around the grounds. There are rumours that the hill on which the castle stands conceals the grave of an old king, together with his hoard of silver and gold.


 
 


Golden Coffin

Location: Notgrove (Gloucestershire) - Long Barrow
Type: Legend
Date / Time: Unknown
Further Comments: The long barrow was said to conceal a coffin made from gold. Nothing was found when the stones were exposed, and now the site has been (badly) covered up.


 
 


Golden Coffin

Location: Ogbourne St George (Wiltshire) - Barrow
Type: Legend
Date / Time: Early twentieth century?
Further Comments: A barrow in this area was thought to contain a golden coffin. When treasure hunters tried to dig into the barrow, their tools broke and were prevented from completing their task. The barrow was also said to contain a nest of vipers.


 
 


Could be Cromwell

Location: Old Basing (Hampshire) - Basing House ruins
Type: Haunting Manifestation
Date / Time: Unknown
Further Comments: The jury is out to whether this shade is that of Oliver Cromwell, who is responsible for destroying the building, or that of a former family member looking for lost treasure (in the form of a golden calf). In addition, the ruins are also home to several phantom monks and a Puritan on horseback that gallops up the driveway only to vanish near the church.


 
 


Madame Hannah Beswick

Location: Oldham (Lancashire) - Birchen Bower (building no longer stands, but replaced by Ferranti Works), Bower Lane, Hollinwood
Type: Haunting Manifestation
Date / Time: Weather Dependent: clear nights. Last seen 1950s
Further Comments: Though the building no longer stands, the ghost of Beswick was also said to haunt her former lands, watching over the gold that she had buried to protect it from thieves and soldiers. The shade reportedly stands tall, wearing a black silk dress and frilly cap, although sometimes she was headless. According to legend, her presence grows stronger every seventh anniversary of her death (in 1758), and she was also seen on clear nights. During the 1950s it was claimed that 35 Ferranti workers had seen her on different occasions.


 
 


Golden Coffin

Location: Orchardleigh (Somerset) - Murtry Hill Long Barrow
Type: Legend

Further Comments: This is another location where a golden coffin is reputed to be buried.


 
 


Targets

Location: Otterford (Somerset) - Robin Hood's Butts
Type: Legend
Date / Time: Unknown
Further Comments: Three tumuli here were said to have been used by Robin Hood for target practice. The area is also reputedly home to a phantom possession of soldiers, and when treasure hunters tried to raid the tumuli, the dirt is said to have replaced itself as quick as it was removed.


 
 


De Mandeville

Location: Outer London: Enfield (Greater London) - Camlet Moat, Enfield Chase
Type: Haunting Manifestation

Further Comments: Dying in an accident while trying to bury his treasure, De Mandeville has returned to watch over his fortune, dressed in his knightly armour.


 
 


Sunken Treasure

Location: Pengersick (Cornwall) - Cudden Point
Type: Legend
Date / Time: Unknown
Further Comments: A ship laden with treasure is reported to have been lost in the time of Queen Elizabeth.


 
 


Man

Location: Port Talbot (West Glamorgan) - Hafod Farm
Type: Legend
Date / Time: Unknown
Further Comments: The ghost of a man appeared to a farm labourer several times. The labourer finally listened to the entity who told the man to go to Neath and dig at a certain location. The labourer did so, and found enough gold to construct a row of cottages.


 
 


Gold

Location: Priddy (Somerset) - Nine Barrows
Type: Legend

Further Comments: One of the barrows in this region is said to contain a fantastic golden coffin.


 
 


White Woman

Location: Rhosili (West Glamorgan) - Paviland Cave, between village and Port Eynon
Type: Haunting Manifestation
Date / Time: Unknown
Further Comments: This cave is haunted by a greedy woman who entered it looking for hidden treasure - a sudden storm blew up, trapping and drowning her.


 
 


Hidden Gold

Location: Robin Hood's Butts (Somerset) - Exact location unknown

Date / Time: Unknown
Further Comments: Under these man made hills is a fortune in gold - alas, it is impossible to dig up, as any hole made quickly refills itself by supernatural means.


 
 


Golden Coffin

Location: Rodmarton (Gloucestershire) - Windmill Tump

Further Comments: This is another location where a golden coffin is reputed to be buried.


 
 


Guarded Hoard

Location: Ruborough Camp (Somerset) - Exact location unknown
Type: Legend
Date / Time: Unknown
Further Comments: Magically concealed, the treasure hidden here only stands a chance of discovery when the moon is full. However, if anyone comes to close to discovering the hoard, a phantom horse appears and charges the treasure hunter.


 
 


Golden Table

Location: Ryme Intrinseca (Dorset) - Court Hill

Further Comments: A golden table is reputed to be at the bottom of a well on the hill.


 
 


Haunted Hoard

Location: Scawby-cum-Sturton (Lincolnshire) - Corner formed by A18 and A15, between Scawby and Sturton, known as Lidgett's Gap
Type: Legend
Date / Time: Unknown
Further Comments: Somewhere around an ash tree in the area known as Lidgett's Gap is said to be hidden treasure, though it is protected by a boggard.


 
 


Monk

Location: Shaftesbury (Dorset) - Shaftesbury Abbey
Type: Haunting Manifestation
Date / Time: Monk unknown, man in 1971
Further Comments: When this man died, he was the only one to know the true location of the Abbey's hidden treasure. He now returns to ensure it remains hidden. It is worth noting that the ghost 'walks' on his knees - one assumes this is because of a change in ground level. Several people claimed to have seen a phantom man running around the ruins at night; some say that this was the ghost of King Edward.


 
 


Coffin

Location: Shepton Mallet (Somerset) - Barrow on Beacon Hill
Type: Legend
Date / Time: Unknown
Further Comments: This barrow is another that was rumoured to contain a golden coffin.


 
 


Knocking Man

Location: Shillington (Bedfordshire) - Knocking (or Money) Knoll
Type: Legend
Date / Time: Unknown
Further Comments: The tapping sounds that are said to emerge from this mound come from a man hidden inside, rapping on his treasure chest to ensure it is still full. Other reports say that the ghostly figure actually walks up to the knoll and taps on the grass before vanishing.
