Tomb Raiders - Legends of Hidden Treasure

 
 


Treasure

Location: Brading (Isle of Wight) - Tree (no longer standing in the area once known as Centurion's Copse
Type: Legend
Date / Time: Nineteenth century
Further Comments: Treasure was said to have been buried under a tree which once stood here. The only way to uproot the tree and recover the hoard was to chain twelve white oxen to the tree and have the creatures uproot it. Unfortunately the tree was cropped down, so the treasure remains hidden.


 
 


Treasure Hunter

Location: Braishfield (Hampshire) - Dark Lane, and the surrounding area
Type: Haunting Manifestation
Date / Time: Unknown
Further Comments: The area is reportedly haunted by the shade of an Edwardian woman looking for a hoard of treasure she hid while living in a building along the road. She is said to be more likely to be seen by dogs, which react by howling for no apparent reason, rather than people.


 
 


Demon Bird

Location: Bransil (Hereford & Worcester) - Bransil Castle
Type: Legend
Date / Time: Unknown
Further Comments: A large black bird was once said to protect a pile of hidden gold within the castle grounds. The hoard could not be moved unless the bones of Lord Beauchamp, former owner of the gold, were in possession of the treasure hunter.


 
 


Gold Guard

Location: Bridgend (Mid Glamorgan) - Ogmore Castle
Type: Haunting Manifestation
Date / Time: Unknown
Further Comments: Protecting hidden treasure, this shade once attacked a man who tried to take all the gold - he died soon after of a wasting disease. It is not known whether the spectral woman who has also been seen here is the same ghost, although most legends say she does guard the hoard, which in turn is said to be haunted by the wailing of its former owners. Another legend says that whoever falls asleep here may wake in the past or future.


 
 


Hoard

Location: Brighton (Sussex) - Hollingbury Hillfort
Type: Legend

Further Comments: A local legend says that treasure is (or was) concealed in this area, though the details are vague.


 
 


Black Monk

Location: Bristol (Somerset) - All Saint's Church
Type: Haunting Manifestation
Date / Time: Last seen 1948?
Further Comments: Many believe that this ghostly monk in black has returned to watch over a pile of treasure which was hidden during his lifetime. The figure has been spotted several times over the last two hundred years, most recently around Christmas 1948 when he was seen walking down the church aisle.


 
 


Excalibur

Location: Broomlee Lough (Northumberland) - Waters of the lake
Type: Legend

Further Comments: The lake is another contender for the claim for being the resting place for King Arthur's sword. Another legend says the lake is home to a treasure that can only be retrieved by chain made by seventh generation blacksmith that is pulled by a team of twin horses, twin oxen, and twin youths.


 
 


Golden Table

Location: Buckland Newton (Dorset) - Dungeon Hill Hillfort (private land)
Type: Legend
Date / Time: Unknown
Further Comments: A deep well near the hillfort was said to contain a golden table - a recovery attempt caused a minor earth tremor, so work was stopped.


 
 


Golden Coffin

Location: Carburrow Tor (Cornwall) - Cairns
Type: Legend
Date / Time: Unknown
Further Comments: Protected by a flock of birds, two golden coffins were believed to be buried under the cairns.


 
 


White Lady

Location: Cardiff (South Glamorgan) - Castell Coch
Type: Haunting Manifestation
Date / Time: Unknown
Further Comments: A 'new' building on the site of thirteenth century ruins, the White Lady once haunted the older area, and now has set up shop in the replacement castle. The woman is said to have died of a broken heart after her son drowned in a local pond. There is also reported to be a buried hoard of treasure here, zealously protected by three eagles, while an ethereal cavalier walks the castle grounds.


 
 


Little People

Location: Carmyllie (Angus) - Carmylie Hill
Type: Fairy
Date / Time: Unknown
Further Comments: Once a popular place for pixies to frequent and dance, they have not been seen in recent years. They are said to be protecting a concealed hoard of gold.


 
 


King Gerennius

Location: Carne (Cornwall) - Carne (or Veryan) Beacon barrow
Type: Legend
Date / Time: Barrow still present
Further Comments: King Gerennius was thought to have been buried here within a ship of gold that used silver oars, though when the barrow was opened in 1855, no ship was found.


 
 


Gold Coffin

Location: Cashmoor (Dorset) - Thickthorn Down barrow
Type: Legend
Date / Time: Barrow
Further Comments: The barrow was once thought to contain a golden coffin, though when excavated in 1933, no coffin was discovered.


 
 


Fairy Treasure

Location: Castel (Guernsey) - Rocky outcrop in the parish of Ste Marie du Castel
Type: Legend
Date / Time: Unknown
Further Comments: This rocky pile was once said to be home to fairies and witches, and it concealed a massive wealth of treasure within.


 
 


Horses

Location: Challacombe (Devon) - Broken Barrow (exact location not known)
Type: Haunting Manifestation
Date / Time: Unknown
Further Comments: A man who tried to break into this barrow was driven mad by the sound of horses - each time the robber reached into the hole he had made, the sound of horses could be heard, though they could not be seen. The man lost his sight and hearing, and died three months later.


 
 


Pan

Location: Challacombe (Devon) - Wood Barrow
Type: Legend
Date / Time: Unknown
Further Comments: A pan made from brass and filled with gold and silver was said to be concealed beneath this barrow. One treasure hunter was said to have been driven insane by phantom horses which followed him around the area.


 
 


Coffin

Location: Chesterblade (Somerset) - Small Down Knoll
Type: Legend

Further Comments: Nine barrows can be found here, but only one is said to contain a golden coffin.


 
 


Mermaid

Location: Child's Ercall (Shropshire) - Pool
Type: Cryptozoology
Date / Time: Unknown
Further Comments: This mermaid was so upset at the way she was treated by onlookers, she drove to the bottom of the pool and never returned. It was thought that she guarded a mass of treasure.


 
 


Non-Removable Treasure

Location: Chiseldon (Wiltshire) - Barrow along Gypsy Lane (southwest of village)
Type: Legend
Date / Time: Barrow still present
Further Comments: It was once believed that a golden coffin was contained within the barrow, and any attempt to remove it would fail.


 
 


Dwarf

Location: Chudleigh Knighton (Devon) - Exact location unknown
Type: Fairy
Date / Time: Unknown
Further Comments: This little man is said to stand guard over a fabulous wealth, once concealed from greedy men.


 
 


White Woman

Location: Churchill (Oxfordshire) - Crossroads close to Lyneham Longbarrow
Type: Haunting Manifestation
Date / Time: Unknown
Further Comments: A white female phantom is said to walk this area. It is unclear whether the ghost is that of an old woman who once lived in a nearby cave and watched over a hoard of treasure.


 
 


Guarded Secret Tunnel

Location: Cissbury (Sussex) - Hillfort
Type: Dragon
Date / Time: Unknown
Further Comments: Leading to an untold amount of wealth, the tunnel hidden in this hillfort is guarded by a pair of snake-like dragons. The ghost of a druid is reported to haunt the site looking for this treasure, and the sound of phantom galloping horses have also been reported.


 
 


Calf

Location: Clayton (Sussex) - Hill
Type: Legend

Further Comments: A golden calf is said to be buried under a hill in the area, possibly under a barrow.


 
 


Guardian

Location: Clevedon (Somerset) - Area between Dolebury Hill (near Clevedon) and Cadbury Camp
Type: Dragon
Date / Time: Unknown
Further Comments: A dragon was (is still?) reported to guard a secret stash to treasure concealed somewhere in this area.


 
 


Wealthy Farmer

Location: Clopton (Suffolk) - Farm next to Clopton Hall
Type: Haunting Manifestation
Date / Time: Mid twentieth century
Further Comments: The ghost of a farmer whose wealth was never discovered is said to still be around the area, waiting for a person willing to follow him to the hidden money.
