Footsteps

Location: Scone (Perth and Kinross) - Scone Palace, South Passage
Type: Haunting Manifestation
Date / Time: Unknown
Further Comments: The ghost here is said to constantly walk up and down the passage, always at the same constant speed. One witness reported feeling something hit her arm three times while passing along the corridor.


 
 


Anne Boleyn

Location: SE1 (Greater London) - Lambeth Palace, & River Thames near the building
Type: Haunting Manifestation
Date / Time: Unknown
Further Comments: Carried in a Thames barge crewed by faded grey figures, the shade of Boleyn is taken to the Tower of London where she met her maker. The palace itself sometimes echoes with Anne's voice, pleading and crying for her life to be saved.


 
 


Bodiless Hand

Location: SE10 (Greater London) - Greenwich Palace (currently Royal Naval property), & the Queen's House - Tulip Staircase
Type: Haunting Manifestation
Date / Time: 1966
Further Comments: The phantom hand photographed on the Tulip Staircase is one of the most frequent images to crop up in books on the subject of ghosts and hauntings, though recently the effect has been duplicated with a long exposure time. The other ghost in the former palace resembles Queen Elizabeth, complete with period costume and red hair. The Queen Anne block is haunted by Admiral Byng, executed for treason in the 1700s.


 
 


Monk

Location: Shaftesbury (Dorset) - Shaftesbury Abbey
Type: Haunting Manifestation
Date / Time: Monk unknown, man in 1971
Further Comments: When this man died, he was the only one to know the true location of the Abbey's hidden treasure. He now returns to ensure it remains hidden. It is worth noting that the ghost 'walks' on his knees - one assumes this is because of a change in ground level. Several people claimed to have seen a phantom man running around the ruins at night; some say that this was the ghost of King Edward.


 
 


Mary Queen of Scots

Location: Sheffield (Yorkshire) - Manor Lodge (aka Manor Castle)
Type: Haunting Manifestation
Date / Time: Unknown
Further Comments: Wearing a long black dress, Mary appears in the Turret House and has been seen gliding along corridors and passing through walls.


 
 


Mary with her Jailor

Location: Sheffield (Yorkshire) - Turret House
Type: Haunting Manifestation
Date / Time: Twentieth century
Further Comments: Mary Queen of Scots was held here for many years, and on occasion her ghost is seen looking out from a window. Her male jailor is sometimes seen standing guard on the stairwell.


 
 


King Charles I

Location: Southwell (Nottinghamshire) - Saracen's Head Inn
Type: Haunting Manifestation
Date / Time: Unknown
Further Comments: King Charles I is said to have used this building as a hideout whilst on the run, and his phantom now appears in the King Charles Suite. Another man, sporting a powdered wig, also haunts the building, as does a woman in eighteenth century dress.


 
 


Mary

Location: Southwick (Northamptonshire) - Stone Chapel
Type: Haunting Manifestation
Date / Time: Twentieth century
Further Comments: The Queen of Scots has put in at least one appearance here, praying at the altar.


 
 


King Harold's Army

Location: Stamford Bridge (Yorkshire) - Area over battlefield
Type: Haunting Manifestation
Date / Time: 1812
Further Comments: The reenactment of Harold's 1066 victory has been observed in the skies over the field where much blood was shed.


 
 


Princess Cicely

Location: Standen (Isle of Wight) - Great East Standen Lodge
Type: Haunting Manifestation
Date / Time: Twentieth century
Further Comments: Never seen, but her presence is announced at night when her invisible form is felt sitting on the end of a bed.


 
 


Man in Highland Dress

Location: Stirling (Stirling) - Stirling Castle
Type: Haunting Manifestation
Date / Time: 1970s
Further Comments: A photograph taken in the 1970s shows what could be a spectral figure walking along the cobbled path. Reports of phantom footsteps echoing down corridors have also been reported at the castle, and a green lady has been observed. Not to be forgotten, some also say a woman in a pink silken dress stalks the area outside the fort, and she is named as Mary Queen of Scots.


 
 


Chained Monk

Location: SW1 (Greater London) - Buckingham Palace
Type: Haunting Manifestation
Date / Time: 25 December (reoccurring)
Further Comments: Said to predate the construction of the palace, this monk appears bound in chains once a year on Christmas Day. The sound of a suicide (the single shot of a pistol) is occasionally heard on the first floor - the private secretary to King Edward VII ended his life here.


 
 


Misty Shape

Location: SW1 (Greater London) - Clarence House
Type: Haunting Manifestation
Date / Time: 1940s
Further Comments: A misty shape scared a worker in the building, causing her to flee. The visitation had been preceded by much banging and crashing.


 
 


Animated Queen Anne

Location: SW1 (Greater London) - Queen Anne's Gate, Westminster
Type: Haunting Manifestation
Date / Time: 01 August (reoccurring)
Further Comments: Once a year the statue of the Queen becomes animated and walks around the neighbourhood. Until recently, the statue was believed to be Bloody Mary, until a clean-up operation revealed an inscription pointing out the error.


 
 


Small Man with Slit Throat

Location: SW1 (Greater London) - St James's Palace
Type: Haunting Manifestation
Date / Time: 31 May (reoccurring)
Further Comments: Rumoured to have been killed by George III's son (the Duke of Cumberland), this restless spirit returns to the crime scene once a year, its throat still dripping blood from a large slit.


 
 


Queen Boadica and Daughters

Location: Theydon Bois (Essex) - Epping Forest, Iron Age Hillfort
Type: Haunting Manifestation
Date / Time: Unknown
Further Comments: Several old reports exist of Boadica being seen at this location with her daughters, though nothing has appeared recently.


 
 


Queen Elizabeth

Location: Tilbury (Essex) - Tilbury Fort
Type: Haunting Manifestation
Date / Time: Unknown
Further Comments: Said to be home to several shades, one of the figures that haunts the fort is reportedly Elizabeth I.


 
 


Ghost Hunt

Location: Tutbury (Staffordshire) - Tutbury Castle
Type: Haunting Manifestation
Date / Time: 2003
Further Comments: This building broke the record for having the world's largest ghost hunt, with 700 people looking for the phantom monk, a grey lady, a drummer boy and Mary Queen of Scots, amongst other shades...


 
 


Eleanor of Castille

Location: W4 (Greater London) - Blackfriar's Priory, Queen Victoria Street
Type: Haunting Manifestation
Date / Time: Unknown
Further Comments: The ruined building houses this former Queen's heart, and it is she who is said to now walk the area.


 
 


George II

Location: W8 (Greater London) - Kensington Palace
Type: Haunting Manifestation
Date / Time: Unknown
Further Comments: Looking at the weather vane, waiting for a message from Hanover, George II has been seen looking out of a palace window. Another ghost, thought to be Sophia (aunt of Queen Victoria), can be heard operating an old spinning wheel late at night and the final entity takes the form of a man wearing breeches and walks around the courtyard.


 
 


King's Mistress

Location: Wallingford (Berkshire) - George Hotel
Type: Haunting Manifestation
Date / Time: Twentieth century
Further Comments: Room 3 was reportedly the home of a ghostly mistress of Charles I, who cried herself to death on hearing of his execution. Room 5 appears to be the haunt of two children, who stand by the wash basin.


 
 


Mary Queen of Scots

Location: Wansford (Northamptonshire) - Haycock Hotel
Type: Haunting Manifestation
Date / Time: Unknown
Further Comments: Mary was held here briefly en route to Fotheringhay castle, and after her execution, it is said her shade returned here (as well as many other places throughout the UK).


 
 


Man in Grey

Location: WC2 (Greater London) - Drury Lane Theatre Royal
Type: Haunting Manifestation
Date / Time: Prior to a long running show
Further Comments: Seeing this ghost, dressed in a long grey coat with a Tricorn hat, is considered a good omen; if it appears either in the morning or afternoon during rehearsals, the performance will go on to be a great success. King Charles II is also supposed to haunt the building (he was a great theatre lover), as does the shade of Joe Grimaldi who helps anyone struggling with their lines. Finally, the backstage corridors are home to the wraith of Charles Macklin, a murderer who was never found guilty, and now walks the scene of his crime.


 
 


Anne Boleyn

Location: WC2 (Greater London) - Durham House (no longer standing) Durham House Street
Type: Haunting Manifestation
Date / Time: Unknown
Further Comments: This building held Anne during her last days, and while the house no longer stands, its basement remains, and it is here the ghost still resides.


 
 


Mary Rose Tudor

Location: Westhorpe (Suffolk) - Westhorpe Lodge
Type: Haunting Manifestation
Date / Time: Twentieth century
Further Comments: This building may contain the ghost of Henry VIII's sister.
