Two Men with Pack Horses

Further Comments: Two men leading pack horses escort the body of Edward the Martyr Prince to his final resting place.


 
Each Ceannan Dubh

Location: Shandra (County Antrim) - Loch an Eich
Type: Cryptozoology
Date / Time: Unknown
Further Comments: The Each Ceannan Dubh was a magical horse with fire burning in its eyes. The creature also had a large spear embedded in its chest. Each Ceannan Dubh died after galloping into a wall, the impact pushing the spear further into its chest and piercing its heart.


 
Cavalier on Horseback

Location: Shannon (County Clare) - Bickford House
Type: Crisis Manifestation
Date / Time: Prior to tragedy in the family
Further Comments: The family which once lived in this house were haunted by a Cavalier who would appear galloping towards the building just prior to a death or bad news.


 
Uther Pendragon

Location: Shap (Cumbria) - General area
Type: Haunting Manifestation
Date / Time: Winter (reoccurring)
Further Comments: A large man on horseback seen galloping around on winter nights is said to be Uther Pendragon, though his motivation for being here is unclear.


 
Arthur's Victory

Location: Shapwick (Dorset) - Badbury Rings
Type: Legend
Date / Time: Battle in sixth century(?), entities in late twentieth century
Further Comments: This hillfort has been named by some as the location where King Arthur defeated the Saxons. Several phantasmic events also surround the Rings, including the sighting of a ghostly warrior on horseback, a spectral woman wearing a black dress, and an ugly dwarf-like entity which peers into the windows of parked cars. Finally, there are stories of a golden coffin buried in the area.


 
Horse and Cart

Location: Sheffield (Yorkshire) - The Crofts public house, Mosborough
Type: Haunting Manifestation
Date / Time: 1980s?
Further Comments: This phantom horse and cart would be seen in the car park and were frequently mistaken as being 'real'. When a pond on the grounds was filled in, the apparition never returned.


 
Coach and Four

Location: Shepley (Yorkshire) - Roads around the Shepley War Memorial
Type: Haunting Manifestation
Date / Time: Winter (reoccurring)
Further Comments: Appearing at night, this phantom coach pulled by four horses would move at breakneck speed along the roads in and around the village.


 
Hooves on Gravel

Location: Shoeburyness (Essex) - Countryside in area
Type: Environmental Manifestation
Date / Time: 1950s
Further Comments: While walking home through the nearby countryside, a woman reported hearing the sounds of overworked horses and the sound of gravel. The site of the occurrence, upon investigation, proved once to be a brick yard.


 
Shadows

Location: Shotton Colliery (Durham) - Private residence (new build)
Type: Haunting Manifestation
Date / Time: 2008 - 2009
Further Comments: A former occupier of this property moved out after his dog chased a shadow out of the living room and up the stairs. They also reported hearing horse's hooves and experiencing poltergeist-like behaviour.


 
Peasant Girl

Location: Silverstone (Northamptonshire) - Whittlebury Forest (and site of the former woodland)
Type: Curse
Date / Time: Unknown
Further Comments: A knight took his own life after having his love rejected by a peasant girl. Lying in his own blood, the knight cursed her, and she died soon after. The peasant's ghost remains in the forest. Another entity reported to haunt the area is the wild hunt, complete with headless horseman (thought by some to be the aforementioned knight).


 
Horseman

Location: Sixpenny Handley (Dorset) - Bottlebush (or Bottlebrush) Down
Type: Haunting Manifestation
Date / Time: 1924, onwards and previous
Further Comments: This figure on horseback is supposed to date from the late Bronze Age, which probably makes him the UK's oldest ghost. When a nearby barrow was excavated, it revealed the bones of a man and horse. The area is also said to be home to fairies.


 
Headless on Headless

Location: Skipsea (Yorkshire) - Roads around town
Type: Haunting Manifestation
Date / Time: Unknown
Further Comments: The headless highwayman seen around this area rides a headless horse. A road on a hill south of the town is haunted by a woman wearing black, who quickly vanishes just before reaching a hill.


 
Clifford's Coach

Location: Skipton (Yorkshire) - High Street
Type: Crisis Manifestation
Date / Time: Midnight, prior to a death in the family (reoccurring)
Further Comments: The appearance of Lady Ann Clifford in her horse drawn coach was said to herald the death of the owner of the local castle.


 
Young Girl on Horseback

Location: Slapton (Buckinghamshire) - Road from Slaptonbury Mill (no longer standing) to farm on other side of the village
Type: Haunting Manifestation
Date / Time: Circa 1980
Further Comments: Legend says that the girl and her horse were both drowned when the mill stream flooded; the sound of the horse's hooves can still be heard. One driver reported seeing a well dressed person upon a white horse as they travelled between Ivinghoe Aston and Slapton. They feared that they had hit the horse, so stopped, only to find no one there.


 
White Horse

Location: Slindon (Sussex) - Area around village and Fontwell Park
Type: Haunting Manifestation
Date / Time: Twentieth century
Further Comments: Often seen early in the morning, this riderless phantom steed moves towards witnesses and dissolves away seconds before reaching them. The entity may be related to the ghostly carriage pulled by a team of horses which was said to pass through the village along the lane close to the old butcher's shop.


 
One Man and his Dog

Location: Souter Fell (Cumbria) - Exact place unknown
Type: Haunting Manifestation
Date / Time: 1745
Further Comments: Two men witnessed a man with a hound, pursuing several horses along a steep rocky ridge. Man and beasts suddenly vanished - the witnesses were at first concerned that they had all fallen over the edge of a cliff, though were unable to find any bodies.


 
Army Marching On

Location: Souter Fell (Cumbria) - Side of Mountain visible from Wilton Hall
Type: Environmental Manifestation
Date / Time: 23 June 1744 (reoccurring?)
Further Comments: Over two dozen witnesses saw a mass of troops ascending the mountain on horseback, though there were no real soldiers in the area. The ghostly army had been seen twice before, always on the same date.

Further Comments: Ghostly horses and their riders are reported to haunt this region.


 
Judge Peck

Location: Spixworth (Norfolk) - General area
Type: Haunting Manifestation
Date / Time: Unknown
Further Comments: Perhaps connected to the Spixworth Manor ghost, a local tale warns of the phantom Judge Peck who travels the area in a coach.


 
Horse Drawn Hearse

Location: Spixworth (Norfolk) - Spixworth Manor (no longer standing)
Type: Haunting Manifestation
Date / Time: Pre-1940s
Further Comments: Several spooky manifestations were claimed by the manor house, included a spectral hearse driven up the driveway, a piano which played itself, a man bearing a lantern who resembled a night watchman, and a ghostly woman holding a candle.


 
Sobbing

Location: St Albans (Hertfordshire) - Wicked Lady public house
Type: Haunting Manifestation

Further Comments: The sound of a lady's gentle sobs has been heard diffusing through the fabric of the pub. The common outside the pub is home to a highway woman on horseback, after whom the building is named.


 
Galloping

Location: St Just (Cornwall) - Road between St Just & Tregeseal
Type: Haunting Manifestation
Date / Time: Weather Dependent: Stormy weather
Further Comments: The sounds of horses pulling a carriage have been reported coming from this stretch of road during stormy nights.


 
Three Horsemen

Location: St Peter Port (Guernsey) - Colborne Road
Type: Haunting Manifestation
Date / Time: Around end nineteenth / start twentieth century
Further Comments: Riding white horses, three figures were said to gallop loudly down the hill.


 
Lady Matthias

Location: Stackpole Elidor (Dyfed) - Stackpole Court (no longer standing)
Type: Haunting Manifestation
Date / Time: Unknown
Further Comments: A headless coachman driving headless horses pulling a headless lady in a coach would travel around the former court building. The woman in the coach was said to be Lady Matthias, and one story has it that she was exorcised many years prior to the demolition of the building.


 
Bloody Horseman

Location: Staindrop (Durham) - A688 between town and Raby Castle
Type: Haunting Manifestation
Date / Time: Unknown
Further Comments: This phantom rider on a white horse has his face covered in blood. The entities are said to slowly descend into the ground.
