Hooded Figures

Location: Sookholme - Chapel
Type: Haunting Manifestation
Date / Time: Summer, 1925
Further Comments: Twelve figures wearing hoods and robes were seen by a bird watcher out at night. He said that the figures moved in a chain, each man behind with his hand on the shoulder of the one in front.


 
 


Suicide

Location: Sookholme - Sokeholme Hall (no longer standing)
Type: Haunting Manifestation
Date / Time: Early nineteenth century
Further Comments: A room by the name of Lukin's Garret was said to be haunted by a member of the family who took their own life.


 
 


Doggy Escort

Location: South Muskham - Crow Lane, between village and Bathley
Type: Shuck
Date / Time: Nineteenth century, and 1910s
Further Comments: A black dog would often appear along this road, trotting by the side of horse riders and motorcyclists.


 
 


Ball Room Charlie

Location: Southwell - Admiral Rodney
Type: Haunting Manifestation
Date / Time: Unknown
Further Comments: Several previous landlords are said to have encountered the phantom nicknamed 'Ball Room Charlie', who takes the form of a man with a beard.


 
 


Barrel Problems

Location: Southwell - Bramley Apple public house
Type: Poltergeist
Date / Time: Unknown
Further Comments: An unseen hand is said to periodically stop the flow from the barrels in the cellar.


 
 


Raleigh

Location: Southwell - Road between Southwell and Oxton
Type: Legend
Date / Time: 25 December (reoccurring)
Further Comments: Beneath a small valley located between these two places is the town of Raleigh, swallowed up by an earthquake. A local legend says the church bells can sometimes still be heard on Christmas Day.


 
 


King Charles I

Location: Southwell - Saracen's Head Inn
Type: Haunting Manifestation
Date / Time: Unknown
Further Comments: King Charles I is said to have used this building as a hideout whilst on the run, and his phantom now appears in the King Charles Suite. Another man, sporting a powdered wig, also haunts the building, as does a woman in eighteenth century dress.


 
 


Ettie

Location: Strelley - Church
Type: Haunting Manifestation
Date / Time: Unknown
Further Comments: Ettie has been named as the ghost that walks around the churchyard.


 
 


Young Girl

Location: Sutton in Ashfield - Forest Glade (former school, now industrial units)
Type: Haunting Manifestation
Date / Time: 1985
Further Comments: Owners of a textile unit reported encountering a young girl wearing Wellington boots. One member of staff who spotted the ghost reported that the entity said 'I do not want to go', before vanishing.


 
 


Cap Lamp

Location: Teversal - Silverhill colliery
Type: Haunting Manifestation
Date / Time: Unknown
Further Comments: An Inspector travelling underground alone spotted a cap lamp in the distance which remained always just ahead of him. Later on, while sawing planks for the gate end team, the man said his job suddenly became easier when it felt like someone was helping him saw by pulling and pushing the other end of his equipment. Startled, he let go of the handle only to see the saw complete another two strokes by itself.


 
 


Tom Otter

Location: Thorney - Lanes in the area
Type: Haunting Manifestation
Date / Time: March 1806 onwards
Further Comments: Tom was hanged after murdering his wife on their wedding night. His phantom is said to still walk or ride around this area.


 
 


Cavalier

Location: Thrumpton - Thrumpton Hall
Type: Haunting Manifestation
Date / Time: Twentieth century
Further Comments: The phantom Cavalier is reputed to haunt the saloon and the grand staircase areas.


 
 


Black Monk

Location: Thurgarton - St Peter's Church
Type: Haunting Manifestation
Date / Time: Unknown
Further Comments: This phantom has been observed walking towards the church before suddenly disappearing from view.


 
 


Children

Location: Thurgarton - Station Cottage
Type: Haunting Manifestation
Date / Time: Unknown
Further Comments: Several ghostly children were reported as haunting here before the occupiers were replaced by automatic crossing barriers. Footsteps were also hear around the building.


 
 


Monks

Location: Thurgarton - Thurgarton Priory and nearby village road
Type: Haunting Manifestation
Date / Time: Unknown
Further Comments: Little remains of the twelfth century priory, other than the phantom monks that have been reported. One driver was convinced he had run over a real person, until the robed figure stood up and faded from view.


 
 


Lion

Location: Tollerton - Area near airport
Type: ABC
Date / Time: Summer 1976
Further Comments: Dozens of witnesses reported seeing a large cat that resembled a lioness, though no hard evidence was ever produced.


 
 


Gamekeeper

Location: Tuxford - A614 (Nottingham bound side) near gate to farmers field
Type: Haunting Manifestation
Date / Time: Late summer, 1987
Further Comments: Three people riding scooters all spotted a figure dressed like a gamekeeper standing in the mist at the gate leading to a field. The figure wore old style clothing, and had only a dark shadow where his face should have been.


 
 


Young Miner

Location: Warsop - Colliery
Type: Haunting Manifestation
Date / Time: Unknown
Further Comments: A chockfitter encountered a green light and a youthful face that terrified him while in the pit. The fitter later spotted a photograph in the canteen, showing the figure he had met - the youth had died in an accident ten years previous. There were other reports of three figures walking together, though they always disappeared without warning.


 
 


Man

Location: Warsop - Meadows surrounding the rectory (now a housing estate)
Type: Haunting Manifestation
Date / Time: Twentieth century?
Further Comments: Before being turned into a housing estate, it was said that the meadows were home to a phantom man who left no footprints in the wet grass.


 
 


Rector

Location: Warsop - Rectory (no longer standing)
Type: Haunting Manifestation
Date / Time: Twentieth century
Further Comments: This rectory and the surrounding area was haunted by a former occupier, though since its demolition the ghost has fallen quiet.


 
 


Floating Woman

Location: Watnall - Nuthall to Moorgreen road, just before the Royal Oak public house
Type: Haunting Manifestation
Date / Time: 1964
Further Comments: Riding a motorbike, this witness narrowly avoided hitting a woman who was crossing the road on a bend. Turning around to shout at the woman, the witness then realised she was actually floating across the road.


 
 


Miss Clements

Location: Wellow - Durham Ox public house
Type: Haunting Manifestation
Date / Time: Unknown
Further Comments: This phantom woman, named as Miss Clements, was said to have been killed in 1857 by a cart driven by the son of the landlord.


 
 


Young Lad

Location: Wellow - Red Lion public house
Type: Haunting Manifestation
Date / Time: Unknown
Further Comments: The Red Lion is reputed to be home of two ghosts. One is of a young boy who drowned in a well in the cellar, while the other presence is said to be a former customer who had nowhere else to go!


 
 


Cloaked Figure

Location: West Bridgeford - Lady Bay public house
Type: Haunting Manifestation
Date / Time: 1970s / 1980s
Further Comments: This cloaked gentleman would be quite commonly seen in the car park, though he has not been seen now for many years. One witness said the figure looked like a monk, but had no face.


 
 


Dog with Large Eyes

Location: West Stockwith - Intake Lane
Type: Shuck
Date / Time: Twentieth century
Further Comments: This canine entity with eyes as large as saucers is said to roam the fields around the lane.
