Children

Location: Gonalston - Gonalston Mill (now a block of flats), and nearby bridge
Type: Haunting Manifestation
Date / Time: Unknown
Further Comments: Before being converted into its current status as residential housing, the building had a reputation of being haunted by the children who died working in the mill. The sounds of the children are also said to be heard under the bridge.


 
 


White Cat

Location: Gunthorpe - River Trent, riverside road leading to West Stockwith at the end of Commonpiece Lane
Type: ABC
Date / Time: 1890s
Further Comments: This light coloured feline was the size of a pig, and was said to have vanished when a local man tried to kick the creature.


 
 


Little Girl

Location: Gunthorpe - Unicorn Hotel
Type: Haunting Manifestation
Date / Time: Late twentieth century
Further Comments: A ghostly little girl is said to haunt room number seven, pulling the covers off the bed if she takes a dislike to the occupant.


 
 


Radley

Location: Halam - Valley southeast of village
Type: Environmental Manifestation
Date / Time: 24 December (reoccurring)
Further Comments: The buried village of Radley is hidden somewhere in this area, and long vanished church bells can be heard on Christmas Eve.


 
 


Elizabeth 'Bessie' Shepherd

Location: Harlow Wood - Road from Mansfield to Nottingham passing by the area
Type: Haunting Manifestation
Date / Time: Unknown
Further Comments: This young lady was robbed and murdered along the road two hundred years ago - her killer (Charles Rotherham) was caught after he tried to sell her shoes. Her ghost appears if anyone touches the small stone memorial which marks the spot she was killed. According to some reports, Bessie's surname is spelt Sheperd or Sheppard.


 
 


Cavalier

Location: Hawton - Road across the bridge
Type: Haunting Manifestation
Date / Time: Unknown
Further Comments: A fisherman encountered a spectral Cavalier passing over the bridge on horseback. The entity faded away.


 
 


Nan Scott

Location: Holme - St Giles Church
Type: Haunting Manifestation
Date / Time: Unknown
Further Comments: A woman who survived the Great Plague but who then starved to death, Nan is said to scurry around the churchyard or can be heard moving around in the upper part of the church.


 
 


Servicemen

Location: Hucknall - Seven Stars public house
Type: Haunting Manifestation
Date / Time: 2000s
Further Comments: A member of staff reported feeling a tap on the shoulder when no one was near here. The public house was investigated by the Ghosts Of Nottingham team. They speculated that the building may be haunted by World War 2 servicemen who were killed by a bomb while staying next door.


 
 


Scared Children

Location: Hucknall - Yew Tree public house, Nottingham Road
Type: Haunting Manifestation
Date / Time: 2008
Further Comments: The East Midlands Paranormal group reported that the pub is haunted by frightened children and laughter.


 
 


Grey Lady

Location: Huthwaite - Library
Type: Haunting Manifestation
Date / Time: Unknown
Further Comments: Occasionally seen wearing a grey silk Victorian dress, this female ghost is more likely to generate the sensation of being watched.


 
 


Old Man

Location: Huthwaite - Mill Lane
Type: Haunting Manifestation
Date / Time: Unknown
Further Comments: This elderly gentleman is said to walk down the lane using a stick for support.


 
 


Leaping Teacher

Location: Keyworth - South Wolds school
Type: Haunting Manifestation
Date / Time: Unknown
Further Comments: There is a myth that a teacher working at the school during the 1960s killed herself by leaping from a third floor window. At least one former student based at the school has reportedly heard the reenactment.


 
 


High Visibility Man

Location: Kimberley - Disused buildings on the hill leading into Kimberley, Main Street (private property)
Type: Environmental Manifestation
Date / Time: 2002
Further Comments: A teenager with a group of friends exploring the sheds on the site spotted a man wearing a high visibility jacket standing in a doorway. The teenager pointed the figure out to the rest of the group, but they could not see anything. They all left the site. About a month later, the teenager returned with another friend, and realised that the doorway in which the man had stood didn't actually exist. The witness was later told that a friend's father had encountered a ghostly man along the road close to the sheds. The man appeared to be 'normal', until he suddenly vanished as the witness walked close.


 
 


Large Dog

Location: Kimberley - Field close to the water tower
Type: Shuck
Date / Time: September 2012
Further Comments: Pushing their bike up the field, this witness paused to take in the view. Looking back the way they were walking, they spotted a horse-sized black dog ahead. The creature ran along a hedge at the top of the hill. The witness took their eyes from the dog for a moment, during which it vanished.


 
 


Grey Horses

Location: Kirkby - The Dumbles
Type: Haunting Manifestation
Date / Time: Summer 1984
Further Comments: A man walking his dog reported seeing a grey coach being pulled by two grey horses. Two grey men sat driving the ghostly vehicle.


 
 


Rearrangement

Location: Kirkby in Ashfield - Duke of Wellington public house
Type: Poltergeist
Date / Time: 1980s
Further Comments: Various landlords at the pub are said to have come down in the morning to find the furniture rearranged or thrown around, even though they heard nothing during the night.


 
 


Fight

Location: Kirkby in Ashfield - Kirkby Castle (foundations remain west of church) and woodland
Type: Haunting Manifestation
Date / Time: November 1989
Further Comments: Two people walking through this area heard the sound of a fight between a large group of men, though nothing could be seen.


 
 


RAF Guard

Location: Langar - Former RAF base
Type: Haunting Manifestation
Date / Time: 1973 and 1983
Further Comments: In 1978 one witness watched a man in a uniform walk down a set of steps. The figure smiled at the witness before walking through a wall. While driving away from the site in 1983, a director of a business operating from the former base thought he had hit a uniformed man that had appeared in front of his car. He stopped and looked for what he assumed was an injured person, but could find nothing. The same thing happened to him again a few weeks later.


 
 


Peggy Whooper

Location: Laxton - Bridge near Bolembeck Lane
Type: Haunting Manifestation
Date / Time: Unknown
Further Comments: Said to have been a woman murdered along the lane, Peggy has since taken great delight in upsetting passing horses, causing them to bolt and throw their riders.


 
 


Footsteps

Location: Laxton - Church
Type: Haunting Manifestation
Date / Time: Unknown
Further Comments: Strange sounds were once heard coming from this church, including footsteps and loud bangs. A ghostly figure was observed by one parson.


 
 


Man with Goatee

Location: Lenton - Church of St Anthony
Type: Haunting Manifestation
Date / Time: Mid - late twentieth century
Further Comments: This church was said to be home to a phantom man with a goatee. An exorcism performed on the site was said to have been unsuccessful.


 
 


George

Location: Lenton - Lenton Hall (aka Lenton Firs Farm)
Type: Haunting Manifestation
Date / Time: Circa 1940s
Further Comments: The phantom here was given the nickname George by the family. George could be heard walking across the ceiling in a particular room that the previous owner had warned was haunted.


 
 


Jailer

Location: Lenton - White Hart public house
Type: Haunting Manifestation
Date / Time: 2000s
Further Comments: This building was once part of a prison, with the resident ghost believed to be a jailer that manifests as a dark shadow. Ghostly childlike singing has also been heard on site.


 
 


Lord Byron

Location: Linby - Newstead Abbey
Type: Haunting Manifestation
Date / Time: Unknown
Further Comments: The story goes Lord Byron once met the ghostly black friar that haunted this building for close to 500 years, though contemporary legends state Bryon himself now sits in the corridor, near his own picture. Also reported in the area is a white lady who smells of rose petals, Bryon's pet dog Boatswain, and a woman in black who is considered unlucky.


 
 


Woman in White

Location: Mansfield - A60 and area around Hall Place (no longer standing)
Type: Haunting Manifestation
Date / Time: 1950s onwards
Further Comments: This phantom woman in a white dress is thought to have once haunted Hall Place before it burnt down - her ghost has now migrated to the nearby road.
