Allen the Guard

Location: Seghill - Seghill Tower
Type: Haunting Manifestation
Date / Time: Unknown
Further Comments: Killed by raiders, Allen is sometimes seen floating around the former defensive structure, forever on guard duty.


 
 


Sleeping Knights

Location: Sewingshield - Castle ruins
Type: Legend
Date / Time: Early 1800s
Further Comments: Legend says the site of King Arthur's hall; a farmer once claimed to have discovered the location, deep underground, accessible only by a secret passage that he'd accidentally stumbled upon. He found a cavern full of sleeping knights, dogs and two royal looking figures - but ran away and couldn't remember where the passage was.


 
 


Old Lady with Gold

Location: South Shields - House along Thrift Street (no longer standing)
Type: Haunting Manifestation
Date / Time: Unknown - likely to be pre twentieth century
Further Comments: A maid venturing into the basement at night encountered a phantom elderly lady who instructed her to reach into an opening in the cellar wall. The maid did so, and pulled out a bag of gold and the deeds to the house. The maid unsurprising retired.


 
 


Cloud

Location: South Shields - Jazz hairdressers, Frederick Street
Type: Haunting Manifestation
Date / Time: December 2008
Further Comments: Footsteps, whistling, knocking, and a solid, hovering cloud have all been reported by staff at the salon. Customers have reported seeing people dressed in old fashioned clothing in the upper part of the building. A barman is said to have died falling down the basement stairs when the building was a club during the 1950s.


 
 


Jack the Hammer

Location: South Shields - Riverside, and general area
Type: Crisis Manifestation
Date / Time: Unknown
Further Comments: This figure is said to appear by the river when someone is lost at sea, and sometimes knocks on the door of a family that is due a tragedy.


 
 


Woman

Location: South Shields - Souter Lighthouse
Type: Haunting Manifestation
Date / Time: Unknown
Further Comments: Three phantoms are thought to haunt this locale; an unknown woman, a miner from a nearby pit, and an old lighthouse man. One or all of them could be responsible for the bangs and the ghostly footsteps heard around the site.


 
 


Not Mother

Location: Tillmouth - Tillmouth Park Country House Hotel
Type: Unknown Ghost Type
Date / Time: Mid twentieth century
Further Comments: A guest at this hotel reported seeing the silhouette of a woman standing by the window of her room in the early hours of the morning. She believed the figure to be that of her mother, with whom she shared the room, though after the figure disappeared the witness noticed her mother was still asleep in bed.


 
 


Breathing

Location: Wallington - Wallington Castle (aka Wallington Hall)
Type: Haunting Manifestation
Date / Time: Unknown
Further Comments: Home to several phantom sounds, these include heavy breathing, the flapping of wings, and banging. An old booklet of 1715 hints that in the past this building was haunted by a ghost that had a habit of sharing a bed with people.


 
 


Hermit

Location: Warkworth - Coquet & hermitage near to Warkworth Castle, and the castle itself
Type: Haunting Manifestation
Date / Time: Unknown
Further Comments: After a tragic accident which resulted in him killing his future wife, the knight Sir Bertram became a hermit - his spirit still remains. Another knight, or maybe the same one, is said to haunt the castle.


 
 


George

Location: Wilbarston - Pilgrim Cottage
Type: Haunting Manifestation
Date / Time: 1957
Further Comments: The owner of this cottage was kept awake at night by lights which darted around her bedroom. She also encountered the apparition of a man which disappeared from the waist down, whom she nicknamed George. George did not return after a minister said prayers in the building.


 
 


Old Jeffrey

Location: Willington - Old Mill (no longer intact, though some of the Rope Works still use the old mill buildings)
Type: Haunting Manifestation
Date / Time: Circa 1840s
Further Comments: Once said to be the most haunted site in the north of England, the mill was haunted by several ghosts. While the most well known was 'Old Jeffrey', a bald man who floated a metre off the ground, other ghosts included a lady in lavender, another woman in grey, and a third woman with empty eye sockets. Phantom animals spotted on site included a rabbit, cat and sheep.


 
 


Tom Chalkley

Location: Woodhorn - St Mary the Virgin Church
Type: Haunting Manifestation
Date / Time: Since the First World War
Further Comments: George Charlton, the assistant sexton, spotted Tom passing through the churchyard. George later spoke to Tom's cousin, who informed him the Chalkley family have just received a telegram informing them Tom had been killed in action. Tom has reportedly been seen three times since his first appearance.


 
 


Devil's Grannie

Location: Wooler - Hanging crag on Doddington Hill Fort
Type: Legend - Old Nick
Date / Time: Unknown
Further Comments: It was said that the Devil hanged his grandmother from this crag on the fort.
