Norse Huntsmen

Location: Hadrian's Wall - Skies over area

Further Comments: A small army of hunters patrol the skies over the wall, searching for souls.


 
Hunters

Location: Haltwhistle - Area near Roman wall
Type: Haunting Manifestation
Date / Time: Unknown
Further Comments: The wild hunt is said to pass through this way, driving all the local pets mad. The same area is also home to a phantom bridal procession, dressed in medieval garments.


 
Minstrel

Location: Haltwhistle - Bellister Castle
Type: Haunting Manifestation
Date / Time: Unknown
Further Comments: This old man often came and played his harp at the castle, so much so that the master of the building decided that the minstrel was a spy and had him killed. This was not the case, and now the musician's grey form is now seen about the castle.


 
Bandit

Location: Haltwhistle - Hardriding Farm

Further Comments: A local villain once had a hideout on this site - he was followed from a scene of a crime and killed here. There have been sightings of the man himself, though more recent are the sounds of sword play in the farm house.


 
Drowned Girl

Location: Haltwhistle - Knarsdale Hall
Type: Haunting Manifestation
Date / Time: Once a year (date unknown)
Further Comments: Appearing on the date of her murder, this young girl silently drifts over the lawn towards where the lake once lay. On version of the story says the phantom girl screams (or it could be the wind).


 
Panther

Location: Haltwhistle - Park Road
Type: ABC
Date / Time: Summer 2006
Further Comments: A woman walking her dog watched as a large black cat crossed the road in front of her before vanishing into bushes.


 
Black Cylinder

Location: Harlow Hill - West of Harlow Hill
Type: UFO
Date / Time: March 1985
Further Comments: Four people watched a black cylindrical object, possibly rotating, for ten minutes as it crossed the sky. The object changed direction once, moving north to south before turning west.


 
Waiting on the Platform

Location: Harperley - Former station
Type: Haunting Manifestation
Date / Time: Unknown
Further Comments: Now overgrown and unloved, the station is said by some still to be haunted by an unknown figure.


 
Archie Armstrong

Location: Haughton - Haughton Castle
Type: Haunting Manifestation
Date / Time: Unknown
Further Comments: Locked away in the castle prison, Archie was forgotten about and slowly starved to death (but not before trying to eat his own arms). He now haunts that area of the castle.


 
Sir Reginald Fitz-Urse

Location: Haydon - Chipchase Castle (private residence, opens to the public in June)

Further Comments: Sir Reginald starved to death within the prison - his ghost is said to remain earthbound.


 
Dunny

Location: Hazelrigg - St Cuthbert's Cave
Type: Haunting Manifestation

Further Comments: This ghost would take the form of a dun coloured horse (though really it was the shade of a pirate-cum-raider) and harass anyone who came too close to his treasure which was buried somewhere nearby.


 
Hedley Kow

Location: Hedley - All over village

Date / Time: Unknown
Further Comments: A spirit that plagued many households in the village, the Hedley Kow would take the form of human or beast, sometimes luring the living into marshy areas. The entity finally disappeared after it manifested as a horse and ran off, escaping the fury of a victim of one of its 'jokes'.


 
Celtic Heads

Location: Hexham - Exact location not known
Type: Other
Date / Time: 1972
Further Comments: Two small stone heads (first identified as Celtic, but later declared modern in their making) caused havoc after they were discovered in a council house garden and brought inside the home. Strange lights were seen, glass and mirrors shattered, and a strange half human creature was seen lurking in the shadows. An archaeologist took the objects to study, and also reported the same occurrences.


 
Long Lamkin

Location: Horsley - Nafferton Tower

Further Comments: A local man known only as Long Lamkin coldly murdered a woman and her child in the region. His shade sometimes is seen briefly in the area.


 
White Woman

Location: Langley - Castle
Type: Haunting Manifestation
Date / Time: Twentieth century
Further Comments: Singing has been reported coming from the building when it is empty, and a ghostly woman dressed in white has also been seen. This entity may be the same as the grey lady reportedly seen in the chapel.


 
Monks

Location: Lindisfarne (aka Holy Island) - Causeway
Type: Haunting Manifestation
Date / Time: 1962
Further Comments: This monk is thought to be one of many brothers killed after the Danes raided the island in 793 AD. He now stands watching out for another sneak attack. Two holiday makers spotted the monk as he faded away on the sands.


 
Constance de Beverley

Location: Lindisfarne (aka Holy Island) - General area

Further Comments: A nun who fell in love with a knight, only to be killed for her sins, is said to haunt the island.


 
White Dog

Location: Lindisfarne (aka Holy Island) - Lindisfarne Castle
Type: Shuck
Date / Time: Unknown
Further Comments: This large hound is said to jump from the castle ruins at people, before slinking back from where it came.


 
St Cuthbert

Location: Lindisfarne (aka Holy Island) - Lindisfarne Castle
Type: Legend

Further Comments: Seen sitting in the ruins, and along the beach of Holy Island, St Cuthbert is dressed in the traditional brown habit of monks. He makes holes in the stones, known locally as St Cuthbert's Beads, which bestow luck to their wearer.


 
Candles & Roses

Location: Longframlington - Rookwood House
Type: Haunting Manifestation
Date / Time: 1974-1978
Further Comments: A former occupier of this house recalled how the smell of snuffed candles filled the air during the summer months and the scent of roses could be detected during winter. Lights would be turned on and off by an unseen hand, and a presence could be felt sitting on a bed at night (once mistaken as an actual person).


 
Warty Dragon

Location: Longwitton - Three wells near village
Type: Dragon
Date / Time: Unknown
Further Comments: This wyrm is said to have found the water from the wells so refreshing he set up home here. The creature was described as having a black tongue, long tail, warty skin, and very sharp claws. It was finally killed by Sir Guy of Warwick.


 
Over Populated

Location: Marsden - Marsden Grotto public house
Type: Haunting Manifestation
Date / Time: 2000s
Further Comments: A team of investigators claimed that this was the most haunted public house in England, with seven ghosts being 'detected' by their electro-magnetic apparatus. One of the shades is reportedly the ghost of a smuggler who tried to inform the authorities of his gang's actions - they found out and locked him away, allowing him to starve to death.


 
Suicidal Woman

Location: Millfield - Coupland Castle
Type: Haunting Manifestation
Date / Time: 1940s
Further Comments: Appearing in the form of white mist, this haunting manifestation also woke all in the building up several times with her unearthly screams, and thunderous running footsteps. She reportedly killed herself by jumping off the battlements.


 
Warrior with Sword

Location: Morpeth - Mitford Castle
Type: Haunting Manifestation
Date / Time: Unknown
Further Comments: An old phantom warrior haunts this castle. Waving a sword in one hand, the other hand holds a bloody head which continues to scream.
