Two Headed Calf

Location: Stamfordham - Exact location not known, but relates to Fenwick Shield
Type: Legend
Date / Time: Pre-twentieth century
Further Comments: Dying shortly after being born, this two-headed calf was said to have cried out, 'Twice burnt, once sunk, and never more seen'. The words were believed to relate to the house known as Fenwick Shield, which some people believed was slowly sinking.

Cow Bone

Location: Stanion - Church
Type: Cryptozoology
Date / Time: Still present
Further Comments: The church is home to a bone just under two metres in length, which is claimed to have come from a giant cow. The cow would provide free milk for the whole village until approached by a jealous witch who made the creature try to fill a perforated bucket - the cow dropped dead of exhaustion.

Goat Man

Location: Staverton - Layby along A425
Type: Cryptozoology
Date / Time: 20 February 2022
Further Comments: The occupant of a car reported seeing a thin bear-like creature standing on its hind legs (also described as a man-goat) that briefly became illuminated in their headlights. The creature stood six foot (1.8 metres) tall, had short legs, and crossed the road before disappearing from sight.

Construction Devil

Location: Stowe Nine Churches - Church
Type: Legend - Old Nick
Date / Time: Unknown
Further Comments: The foundation stones of the church were moved around the village by Old Nick nine times before the rest of the building could be constructed. Another version of the story blames fairies.

Running Rein

Location: Sywell - Sywell House
Type: Haunting Manifestation
Date / Time: Twentieth century
Further Comments: Racehorse Running Rein was put down on the property when he became part of a legal dispute, and his owner became unwilling to hand the mare to another trainer. The creature could be heard at night, galloping around the site.

Blind the Elves!

Location: The Tweed - General area
Type: Fairy
Date / Time: Nineteenth century
Further Comments: It was written that some fishermen would rub salt into their nets and sow salt into the water to blind the elves, who would otherwise ruin a good day's fishing.

Horse sized Dog

Location: Thorney - Woods in the area
Type: Shuck
Date / Time: Summer only (reoccurring)
Further Comments: This great dog is said to be the size of a small horse, also sharing a few other equestrian characteristics.

Civil War Horse

Location: Towcester - Brave Old Oak public house
Type: Haunting Manifestation
Date / Time: Unknown
Further Comments: Several ghosts are said to haunt this pub, including a horse from the Civil War, a child, and something in the cellar.

Nuns or Teachers

Location: Towcester - Private residence, Brackley Road
Type: Haunting Manifestation
Date / Time: Circa 2008
Further Comments: The occupants of this property reported, bangs, knocks and cold spots, while one of them awoke one night to felt something sitting at the end of the bed. A visiting medium said that the site was haunted by either two nuns or teachers. The occupants never felt they were in danger.

Lorry

Location: Towcester - Road near area, exact location unknown
Type: Haunting Manifestation
Date / Time: Twentieth century
Further Comments: Blamed for a couple of accidents, this phantom vehicle bears down on other road users before vanishing.

Mary Queen of Scots

Location: Wansford - Haycock Hotel
Type: Haunting Manifestation
Date / Time: Unknown
Further Comments: Mary was held here briefly en route to Fotheringhay castle, and after her execution, it is said her shade returned here (as well as many other places throughout the UK).

Grey Figure

Location: Warmington - Manor House
Type: Haunting Manifestation
Date / Time: Twentieth century
Further Comments: Another building that features pieces from the Fotheringhay castle, the figure has been seen on the staircase, and is occasionally heard moving around.

Witch of Saratoga

Location: Watford - Old Star and Garter (now private residences)
Type: Legend
Date / Time: late 1700s
Further Comments: Angeline Tubbs gained her reputation as a witch in American, where she is said to have been able to summon storms, but she was born in this public house.

Gamekeeper's Treasure

Location: Weedon Bec - Tree opposite park lodge gates
Type: Haunting Manifestation
Date / Time: Nineteenth century
Further Comments: Shortly after dying, a gamekeeper would manifest under a tree opposite a set of gates at midnight. A parson was told the story and investigated, visiting the site at night. Calling out for the ghost, the parson was met with instruction to dig at the site. The parson did so, and found a bag filled with coins. The gamekeeper was never seen again.

Drinker

Location: Weekley - Stone Moses Statue
Type: Legend
Date / Time: On the stroke of midnight (reoccurring)
Further Comments: Standing above a pond, the carved figure called Stone Moses animates at midnight and walks down to the River Ise for a quick drink.

Blood Stains

Location: Weldon - Haunted Hill House
Type: Unknown Ghost Type
Date / Time: Unknown
Further Comments: The staircase is reported to ooze a red liquid, marking the spot where a man once hanged himself. The local newspaper reported that the land which the house was built on had the name 'Haunted Hill', which predated the more recent ghost story.

Old Lady

Location: Wellingborough - 1 Castle Street
Type: Haunting Manifestation
Date / Time: 1970s
Further Comments: Always seen in the bathroom of the house, this older woman is also heard walking about at night.

Duel

Location: Wellingborough - Hatton Hall
Type: Haunting Manifestation
Date / Time: Unknown
Further Comments: A spectral duel between two brothers was said to be reenacted in the attic of this building; the sound of swords could be heard from quite a distance.

Cromwell

Location: Wellingborough - Hind Hotel, Sheep Street
Type: Unknown Ghost Type
Date / Time: 2002
Further Comments: A teenage medium alleged to have spoken to the ghost of Cromwell in the hotel, who is said to have once used the building as a base of operations for a few days.

Shadowy Figure

Location: Wellingborough - Lyric Bingo Hall, Midland Road
Type: Haunting Manifestation
Date / Time: Twentieth century
Further Comments: This figure has been seen by cleaning staff after closing time, since the building was a cinema, and floating balls of light have also been reported. Some believe that he haunted the area long before construction of the building begun.

Unbottled Ghost

Location: Welton - Field next to the church
Type: Haunting Manifestation
Date / Time: Unknown, likely to be pre twentieth century
Further Comments: The ghost in a field by the church was said to have been tricked into a bottle by members of the local clergy who cast it into a well. The ghost managed to escape and continued to haunt the area.

Vomiting Child

Location: Welton - Manor House
Type: Poltergeist
Date / Time: 1658
Further Comments: Furniture was thrown about, banging was heard, and more disturbingly, one of the children would vomit large lumps of coal and stones.

Mrs Heber

Location: Weston - Weston Hall
Type: Haunting Manifestation
Date / Time: 07 October 1873
Further Comments: Author Sacheverell Reresby Sitwell lived here, and although he never experienced the haunting, his aunt's diary from 1873 documented one of the family had been disturbed during the night by the rustling of the ghostly Mrs Heber's silk dress and the tapping of heels.

Sir George

Location: Wilbarston - Old House, Church Lane

Date / Time: Unknown
Further Comments: The Old House was once believed to be haunted by Sir George and a nun, who both appeared after gravestones were removed. Nothing has been heard of these ghosts as of late.

George

Location: Wilbarston - Pilgrim Cottage
Type: Haunting Manifestation
Date / Time: 1957
Further Comments: The owner of this cottage was kept awake at night by lights which darted around her bedroom. She also encountered the apparition of a man which disappeared from the waist down, whom she nicknamed George. George did not return after a minister said prayers in the building.
