Boudica's Defeat?

Type: Legend
Date / Time: Site still present
Further Comments: This area is another claiming to be the final battle site of Boudica after topographic analysis based on the writings of Tacitus, a historian of the Roman Empire.


 
Little People

Location: Puxley - General area
Type: Fairy
Date / Time: Unknown
Further Comments: It is thought the village is named after a type of fairy that once frequented the area.


 
Wedding Night Disruption

Location: Raunds - Flat, exact location unknown
Type: Poltergeist
Date / Time: November 1978
Further Comments: Together for the first time on their wedding night, this couple felt they were not alone in the flat bedroom - this was proven when an invisible entity tried to strangle the new husband. The couple fled.


 
Lydia Atley

Location: Ringstead - Old orchard & near the churchyard
Type: Haunting Manifestation
Date / Time: 1850 onwards
Further Comments: Rumoured to have been murdered by the village butcher (though it was never proven), the restless spirit of Lydia was seen around the area her body was discovered. The spirit would also sometimes be seen moving towards the churchyard, but would always turn around just prior to reaching it.


 
Roundhead

Location: Rockingham - Rockingham Castle
Type: Haunting Manifestation
Date / Time: Late nineteenth century
Further Comments: Charles Dickens is said to have watched a ghostly figure move towards and disappear at the iron gate while staying at this castle. Jack Gould, in his Gothick Northamptonshire, speculates that it could have been the ghost of a Roundhead as this was the path they took when storming the castle.


 
Monk

Location: Rushton - Between the 'Mount' burial hill and Barford Bridge
Type: Haunting Manifestation
Date / Time: 1980s
Further Comments: A ghostly monk has been seen drifting along carrying an unknown item in the area, sometimes crossing the road and disrupting traffic. Some drivers have reported looking into their rear view mirror and seeing a man's face looking at them from the back seat.


 
Hunting Party

Location: Rushton - Rushton Hall
Type: Haunting Manifestation
Date / Time: Rider unknown, knocking around 1584
Further Comments: A rider on horseback and his hunting dog are reported to haunt the area around the hall, where their bodies were once discovered while the house was extended. Thomas Tresham, who constructed the building, wrote circa 1584 that he and two servants had heard three loud knocks (as if made from a hammer) emerge from a table.


 
Fiddler

Location: Rushton - Rushton Triangular Lodge
Type: Legend
Date / Time: Unknown
Further Comments: Still heard fiddling beneath the structure, this man was once sent down to investigate a secret passage. The fiddler had only travelled a dozen metres when the tunnel collapsed and trapped him for the rest of eternity.


 
Two White Ladies

Location: Ruston - Site of St Peter's church (demolished 1799)
Type: Haunting Manifestation
Date / Time: Circa early twentieth century
Further Comments: One of these phantoms was said to be a jilted Italian princess, the other Lady Cullen, who was cursed by the former woman while they both lived. There were also stories of the site being haunted by a coach and horses, which once a year tore through the area and would vanish at Lady Cullen's grave.


 
Hooded Figure

Location: Salcey Forest - General area
Type: Haunting Manifestation
Date / Time: Unknown
Further Comments: This figure, covered so no flesh is visible, is sometimes seen darting between the trees. It could be a lover of Nell Gwynn, who the king had murdered.


 
Nellie & Charlie

Location: Salcey Forest - Salcey Lawn
Type: Haunting Manifestation
Date / Time: Unknown
Further Comments: The figures of Nell Gwynn and King Charles II have been seen on the property, though never together.


 
Madeline Smith

Location: Scaldwell - Roads around the area
Type: Haunting Manifestation
Date / Time: Unknown
Further Comments: Smith stood trial for the murder of her boyfriend, but was found not guilty. The stress generated by the proceedings proved too much for her, and she died shortly after. Her grey form now haunts the lands.


 
Peasant Girl

Location: Silverstone - Whittlebury Forest (and site of the former woodland)
Type: Curse
Date / Time: Unknown
Further Comments: A knight took his own life after having his love rejected by a peasant girl. Lying in his own blood, the knight cursed her, and she died soon after. The peasant's ghost remains in the forest. Another entity reported to haunt the area is the wild hunt, complete with headless horseman (thought by some to be the aforementioned knight).


 
Blue Lady

Location: Slipton - Samuel Pepys Hotel
Type: Haunting Manifestation
Date / Time: 1970s
Further Comments: This woman in a blue dress was seen by a child in the building, while others reported hearing footsteps and seeing poltergeist like events.


 
Mary

Location: Southwick - Stone Chapel
Type: Haunting Manifestation
Date / Time: Twentieth century
Further Comments: The Queen of Scots has put in at least one appearance here, praying at the altar.


 
Cow Bone

Location: Stanion - Church
Type: Cryptozoology
Date / Time: Still present
Further Comments: The church is home to a bone just under two metres in length, which is claimed to have come from a giant cow. The cow would provide free milk for the whole village, but was finally approached by a jealous witch who made the creature try to fill a perforated bucket - the cow dropped dead of exhaustion.


 
Construction Devil

Location: Stowe Nine Churches - Church
Type: Legend - Old Nick
Date / Time: Unknown
Further Comments: The foundation stones of the church were moved around the village by Old Nick nine times before the rest of the building could be constructed. Another version of the story blames fairies.


 
Running Rein

Location: Sywell - Sywell House
Type: Haunting Manifestation
Date / Time: Twentieth century
Further Comments: A race horse, Running Rein was put down on the property when he became part of a legal dispute, and his owner became unwilling to hand the mare to another trainer. The creature can still be heard at night, galloping around the site.


 
Blind the Elves!

Location: The Tweed - General area
Type: Fairy
Date / Time: Nineteenth century
Further Comments: It was written that some fishermen would rub salt into their nets and also sow salt into the water to blind the elves, who would otherwise ruin a good day's fishing.


 
Horse sized Dog

Location: Thorney - Woods in the area
Type: Shuck
Date / Time: Summer only (reoccurring)
Further Comments: This great dog is said to be the size of a small horse, also sharing a few other equestrian characteristics.


 
Nuns or Teachers

Location: Towcester - Private residence, Brackley Road
Type: Haunting Manifestation
Date / Time: Circa 2008
Further Comments: The occupants of this property reported, bangs, knocks and cold spots, while one of them awoke one night to felt something sitting at the end of the bed. A visiting medium said that the site was haunted by either two nuns or teachers. The occupants never felt they were in danger.


 
Lorry

Location: Towcester - Road near area, exact location unknown
Type: Haunting Manifestation
Date / Time: Twentieth century
Further Comments: Blamed for a couple of accidents, this phantom vehicle bears down on other road users before vanishing.


 
Civil War Horse

Location: Towcester - Brave Old Oak public house
Type: Haunting Manifestation
Date / Time: Unknown
Further Comments: Several ghosts are said to haunt this pub, including a horse from the Civil War, a child, and something in the cellar.


 
Mary Queen of Scots

Location: Wansford - Haycock Hotel
Type: Haunting Manifestation
Date / Time: Unknown
Further Comments: Mary was held here briefly en route to Fotheringhay castle, and after her execution, it is said her shade returned here (as well as many other places throughout the UK).


 
Grey Figure

Location: Warmington - Manor House
Type: Haunting Manifestation
Date / Time: Twentieth century
Further Comments: Another building that features pieces from the Fotheringhay castle, the figure has been seen on the staircase, and is occasionally heard moving around.
