Battlefield Noises

Location: Downham Market - Moat Farm
Type: Haunting Manifestation
Date / Time: Late 1800s
Further Comments: Reports at the end of the nineteenth century claimed that screams and shouting echoed across the fields around moat farm, and that a spooky mist often shrouded the area.

Stalking Hound

Location: East Dereham - Between village and (former) RAF Swanton Morley
Type: Shuck
Date / Time: November 1945
Further Comments: Cycling from his home towards the RAF base, John Harries was stalked by a black dog. The hound stopped when Harries stopped, although it vanished when Harries reached the base.

Figure in Black

Location: East Dereham - Cinema at the Corn Exchange
Type: Haunting Manifestation
Date / Time: 1977
Further Comments: While converting the basement into a bar, builders spotted a figure in black which mysteriously vanished behind a column. It was said that some workers refused to work on the site alone.

St Withburga's Well

Location: East Dereham - St Nicholas's Church
Type: Legend
Date / Time: Still present
Further Comments: This holy well formed after the saint's body was stolen by monks acting on the orders of the Abbot of Ely.

Brown Lady (Dorothy Walpole)

Location: East Rayham - Raynham Hall
Type: Haunting Manifestation
Date / Time: November 1926, photographed 1936
Further Comments: Said to have starved to death after her children were taken away, Dorothy Walpole is now reported to walk the corridors of the house. Her spirit is reported to wear a brown silk dress, and have empty eye sockets. Photographed by Country Life magazine, this ghost has since become world famous. The Brown Lady is also said to warn of the approaching death of the owner of the building.

Two Children, a Spaniel, and the Duke of Monmouth

Location: East Rayham - Raynham Hall - Stone Parlour
Type: Haunting Manifestation
Date / Time: 1930s
Further Comments: Never seen and only 'felt', the spaniel's footfalls can be heard moving about the corridors. The Stone Parlour is haunted by a little girl in a frock (nothing is known about her origins), while the Duke of Monmouth haunts one of the bedrooms.

Doppelganger of Vicar

Location: East Rudham - Vicarage lawn
Type: Manifestation of the Living
Date / Time: December 1912
Further Comments: Observed by several witnesses, the vicar was seen returning home after a period abroad. As it turned out, however, the vicar didn't return home until several weeks later.

Big Cat

Location: East Runton - Railway Embankment
Type: ABC
Date / Time: 19 February 1964
Further Comments: Following up ABC reports, the area was combed by police with dogs; nothing was ever found.

Headless Shuck

Location: East Runton - Runton Heath, between East Runton and Aylmerton
Type: Shuck
Date / Time: Unknown
Further Comments: Manifesting on dark stormy nights, this shuck brings death to those who see him within a year.

Flying Glasses

Location: East Ruston - Butchers Arms public house
Type: Haunting Manifestation
Date / Time: April 2008
Further Comments: Customers have reported seeing a figure standing by a wine cabinet, while items have thrown themselves off shelves and an unseen hand has poured glasses of wine in the kitchen.

Large Wormlike Creature

Location: Eccles-on-Sea - Coastline off Eccles
Type: Cryptozoology
Date / Time: 5 August 1936, evening
Further Comments: Observed by the Mayor, a MP and four other people, a creature twelve metres long moved like a worm on the surface of the water. One witness estimated the speed to be up to ninety mph.

Headless Horseman

Location: Elsing - Belaugh Wall, between Elsing and Bawdswell
Type: Haunting Manifestation
Date / Time: Midnight, though date(s) not known
Further Comments: This decapitated phantom on his steed is said to ride along the wall before leaping over the stonework on the stroke of midnight.


Location: Emneth - Lonely Cottage
Type: Poltergeist
Date / Time: 1960s
Further Comments: For a period of several years, the building was plagued by the standard poltergeist activities; doors and windows opened, household appliances were mysteriously turned on, and ornaments moved and were often found broken.

White Lady

Location: Fakenham - 4 Green Lane
Type: Poltergeist
Date / Time: 1975
Further Comments: A family were terrified by poltergeist activity, which included the entity tightening a crucifix necklace around someone's neck. Unusually, a phantom woman in white was also seen on the site by several people, including a neighbour.

Unlit Bicycle

Location: Fakenham - A148 Bale Crossroads
Type: Haunting Manifestation

Further Comments: A driver was forced to brake sharply as a cyclist pulled out in front of their car. As the driver started to drive again, they realised the cyclist had vanished.

Standing Man

Location: Fakenham - A148, Docking / Hunstanton junction
Type: Haunting Manifestation
Date / Time: 24 March 2006, 22.30
Further Comments: A ghostly figure has been seen standing on the roundabout here at least twice.

Book Loving Gentleman

Location: Felbrigg - Mannington Hall, Library
Type: Post-Mortem Manifestation
Date / Time: 11 October 1879, and 1912
Further Comments: Witness Dr Augustus Jessop claimed to have spent a night in 1879 researching in the library, sharing his work area with a red haired ghost. Possibly unconnected, an exorcism was performed on the site in 1912 to rid the building of a poltergeist - part of the upper floor was bricked up after the procedure.


Location: Feltwell - Feltwell Anchor Fen, near Little Ouse

Further Comments: A sadist in life, Dowser lived in the fen in the mid-nineteenth century. Reported to have beaten his wife, and tying her to various farming appliances, he finally killed himself.

Vanishing Man

Location: Foulden - Thetford Forest

Further Comments: A holidaymaker spoke to a older man wearing smart trousers and shirt. The older man asked if the visitor was local, then excused himself before vanishing.

Devil & Shuck

Location: Foxley - Near a waterway & hill?
Type: Shuck
Date / Time: 1602
Further Comments: Believed to have occurred in 1602, a miller was harassed by the Devil. The Fallen Angel tried to talk to the miller, who refused to stop working. The Devil gave up, turning into a large black dog before running away.

Long Necked Entities

Location: Fritton - Fritton Woods
Type: Unknown Ghost Type
Date / Time: July 1997
Further Comments: Two strange, dark human like creatures startled a couple as they sat in their car at the woods - the witnesses said the entities were quite tall, and had long necks and hands. When the car was started and the headlights turned on, the creatures vanished behind a tree.

Smell of Sulphur

Location: Fulmodeston - Church
Type: Haunting Manifestation
Date / Time: August 2005
Further Comments: Several witnesses at this ruined church encountered a strange white mist and the stench of sulphur. A pet dog refused to go near the tower, and as the party went to leave, voices were heard and a figure seen moving around on top of the tower, even though the flooring had long since crumbled away.

Boudicca's Graves

Location: Garboldisham Heath - Soldier's Hill (barrows)

Date / Time: Still present
Further Comments: As it is widely thought that Boudicca resided in this area of Norfolk, these barrows are contenders as the final resting place of the warrior queen.

Susan and Grumpy

Location: Geldeston - Lock bridge and the old Lock House (now an inn), next to the river Waveney
Type: Haunting Manifestation
Date / Time: 1989, Summer, 02:30h
Further Comments: Camping outside the pub, the witness awoke to visit the bathroom. While looking for a suitable location, he watched an old lady appear on the lock footbridge, holding a candle in a jam jar, closely followed by a large goose. The duo disappeared next to the closed doors of the inn. Asking the landlord the following morning, the young man was told that the old woman he had described was Susan, who had died a few years previous, and the goose her pet named 'Grumpy'.

Running Dog

Location: Geldeston - Lover's Lane, leading to the churchyard
Type: Shuck
Date / Time: Unknown
Further Comments: The small lane leading to the local churchyard is reputedly home to a phantom hound - the creature has been spotted running along the lane. It is thought that the location that the hound appears will soon be the site of a crime. A ghostly donkey seen here may be the same entity. The same area is also haunted by a haunted coach as it travels towards Bungay Castle.
