Further Comments: The Filmhouse is reported to be haunted by a phantom woman, though little is known about her.


 
Woman in Blue

Location: Edinburgh - Royal Lyceum Theatre, Grindlay Street
Type: Haunting Manifestation
Date / Time: Unknown
Further Comments: Observed in the upper gallery, the woman in blue's history is unknown. Phantom laughter is also said to occasionally echo around the site.


 
Young Boy

Location: Edinburgh - Canongate area, Queensberry House (no longer standing)
Type: Haunting Manifestation
Date / Time: Unknown
Further Comments: This building was said to be haunted by the ghost of a young boy who was murdered (and partially eaten) at the site.


 
Naked Lady Hamilton of Bothwellhaugh

Location: Edinburgh - Woodhouse Lee (or Woodhouslee) ruins and meadow, on the outskirts of the city
Type: Haunting Manifestation
Date / Time: Weather Dependent: Snowy nights
Further Comments: After her husband's castle was taken by force, Lady Hamilton was banished into the cold winter night without clothing - needless to say, she froze to death soon after. Her naked shade has been reported in the area, though it never leaves any prints in the fresh snow. Some say she holds the body of her dead child.


 
Resting Giant

Location: Edinburgh - Arthur's Seat
Type: Legend

Further Comments: The rocky outcrop known as Arthur's Seat was once used as a resting place for a passing giant. In 1836 a group of schoolboys discovered seventeen tiny coffins hidden in the area, each containing a small carved figure inside. Their purpose is unknown.


 
Death List

Location: Edinburgh - Mercat Cross, High Street
Type: Other
Date / Time: 09 September 1513
Further Comments: A phantom voice is said to have called out the names of all those who died at the Battle of Flodden on the eve of the fight.


 
Legal Battle

Location: Edinburgh - Trinity, exact location unknown
Type: Other
Date / Time: 1835
Further Comments: A landlord took a tenant who resided in the village to court, claiming the man had slandered the name of his house by claiming it was haunted, and had also caused great damage to the walls by shooting at the 'ghost'.


 
Soldier

Location: Edinburgh - 5 Hazeldean Terrace
Type: Poltergeist
Date / Time: 1957
Further Comments: The ghost of a Prestonpans soldier was said to haunt this site, and performed various poltergeist tricks to obtain attention from the media.


 
Flying Paperclips

Location: Edinburgh - Craigcrook Castle, Blackhall
Type: Poltergeist
Date / Time: 1970 (poltergeist), 2013 (footsteps)
Further Comments: The polt at work in this building threw small metal items at staff, including paperclips and screws. Many years later, a member of staff reported hearing footsteps in an empty room above them.


 
Bluidy MacKenzie

Location: Edinburgh - Kirkyard, Coventanter's Prison
Type: Poltergeist
Date / Time: 1996
Further Comments: While George MacKenzie has been blamed for the phantom attacks on sightseers at this locale, other people say it is the spirits of the prisoners. Either way, many visitors on the local 'ghost walks' have been pinched, pushed, pulled and even cut while at this spooky site.


 
Breaking Glass

Location: Edinburgh - Cramond Inn, Cramond Glebe Road
Type: Poltergeist
Date / Time: 2000s
Further Comments: Like so many other public houses, The Cramond suffers from a polt which is blamed when glasses break for no reason and small items moved around.


 
Glass Mover

Location: Edinburgh - Tolbooth Tavern, Canongate
Type: Poltergeist
Date / Time: 2007
Further Comments: The entity at work here is most likely to push around bottles and glasses, although the occasional shadowy figure has been spotted.


 
Whistler

Location: Edinburgh - Learmouth Hotel
Type: Poltergeist
Date / Time: Twentieth century
Further Comments: Door opening and closing are the trademarks of this spirit, though it is also known to whistle down the corridors.


 
Spottiswode

Location: Edinburgh - Mitre Public House, Royal Mile
Type: Poltergeist
Date / Time: Unknown
Further Comments: Archbishop Spottiswode is reported to haunt the building where he concealed his episcopal chair, even though the haunting takes the form of poltergeist activity.


 
Female Form

Location: Edinburgh - 36 Rutland Street
Type: Post-Mortem Manifestation
Date / Time: 24 December 1887, 07:30h
Further Comments: A doctor who lived her reported seeing the apparition of a female patient he had seen the previous night. The doctor later found out the woman had died at the exact moment of his encounter.


 
Invisible Energy

Location: Edinburgh - Chalmers Close
Type: Unknown Ghost Type
Date / Time: 02 March 2006, approx 20:30h
Further Comments: An invisible force of energy hit a mother and son in the chest before rushing past them at the top of Chalmers Close - both were shaken by the event. A few seconds prior to this, the pair had seen a red headed girl running towards them - they stopped to let her pass, but she turned off.


 
Suicide

Location: Edinburgh - Victorian house along Garscube Terrace
Type: Unknown Ghost Type
Date / Time: 1955
Further Comments: A painter working in the bathroom heard footsteps and was suddenly struck by an electrical shock. He staggered towards the door, which opened itself to let him out. After he left the room, he burst into tears, not understanding why. A short time later he discovered that a young girl had committed suicide in the bathroom only three weeks earlier.


 
Riders

Location: Edinburgh - Lochend Loch, Restalrig
Type: Unknown Ghost Type
Date / Time: Sixteenth century
Further Comments: As Bessie Dunlop tied her horse to the edge of the loch, she heard the sound of dozens of people on horseback dash past her into the water, although nothing could be seen.

Further Comments: A photograph taken in the building is reputed to show a huge phantom face, though it is said that you have to use your imagination to see it properly!


 
Hobgoblin Builders

Location: Gifford - Yester Castle
Type: Legend - Old Nick
Date / Time: Still present, although only subterranean 'Goblin Hall remains'
Further Comments: Warlock Sir Hugo de Giffard is said to have made a pact with the Devil, and in return had an army of Hobgoblins build this castle for him.


 
The Farmer's Wife

Location: Gladhouse Reservoir - Area before it was flooded
Type: Haunting Manifestation
Date / Time: Unknown
Further Comments: It was said that the area was haunted by a couple murdered by an enraged farmer - his wife, and the young servant that she was caught sleeping with.


 
Tall Gentleman

Location: Haddington - Garleton House (no longer standing, though foundations may remain)
Type: Haunting Manifestation
Date / Time: Late eighteenth century
Further Comments: This ghostly figure was said to be desperate to find a volunteer who will listen to his story - no one has ever been found.


 
Lady Kitty

Location: Haddington - Area around Nungate bridge
Type: Haunting Manifestation
Date / Time: Unknown
Further Comments: Lady Catherine Charteris, known as Kitty, has been named as the female form spotted in old fashioned clothing by the bridge.


 
Sir James Stanfield

Location: Haddington - Amisfield House (now ruins within Amisfield Park)
Type: Haunting Manifestation
Date / Time: Unknown
Further Comments: Sir James is said to have been murdered by his son, and the body thrown into the well. The area around the well is said to be haunted by the white spectral figure of Stanfield.


 
The Duke of Lauderdale

Location: Haddington - St Mary's Church
Type: Haunting Manifestation
Date / Time: Unknown
Further Comments: This former duke is seen in the church, and has been blamed for disturbing his own coffin in the crypt.
